Thread 39 - Covid Cohort - Our Adult Children Now Post 18

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 30/08/2022 18:01

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and support to be had !

The Nottingham online admin is awful, it's no wonder some of them are struggling, DS would have no chance without some help.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/09/2022 17:34

No worries @Oblomov22 I'm here now! 😁

@mummyinbeds when I went on the portal it said the whole amount was due by tomorrow? His tasks page said it was overdue. I didn't want to risk losing it so just paid!

We haven't had a slot for moving in yet though?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/09/2022 17:36

@mummyinbeds the user name and passwords are in the email that was sent. We didn't see them at first but they are there. It is more complicated than it should be though. Also had a mare trying to get the Microsoft 360 signed up as it still had him registered with his school - that took a good 20 mins to resolve.

Heifer · 06/09/2022 17:37

We were half way through the IT set up (with a very stroppy DD) when I saw your comments re accommodation arrival slots opened so switched and completed that.

DD will be arriving (Rutland) on Thursday 2-3pm. she decided she did want to get their first day after all.

IT now all sorted too, although haven't yet done the card. Next up is the medical centre... Re IT - now pleasant, but at least I've used Authenticator many times so knew what to do.

Good luck all, sorry everyone not Nottingham. I'm guessing this is getting boring for you - but at least you get to quietly smirk that yours's have been much easier process ;-)

Heifer · 06/09/2022 17:39

@Oblomov22 thanks for the heads up re accommodation arrival slot booking. I can now go and book my train ticket.

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 17:40

Mummy tell him not to worry too much about the IT side. He can do it this week, this weekend. It IS tricky.

I even got an email today that said:

"We currently have an issue with our IT account activation system. This means that there may be a delay in creating your student email account and providing you with access to University of Nottingham systems such as NottinghamHub. We are sorry for any inconvenience this is causing."

But that didn't apply to ds, becarse he's completed his. So generic? But shows they've got problems.

Ds reckons that the IT bit was so complicated that anyone non techy would seriously struggle and that even anyone quite techy would find it infuriating.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/09/2022 17:40

@Heifer what you mean about the slots being opened? I thought we were being emailed a date and time?

Heifer · 06/09/2022 17:41

You don't need to do the IT bit before booking accommodation arrival slot by the way. Also once done you print out a Key Collect Pass - and on their it does tell you the room number so that may be useful for DD/DS to know for when (if ) they join online chat groups.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/09/2022 17:41

@Heifer medical centre???

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 17:42

Popcorn you could try the accommodation portal. Ds Did not actually get the email as promised but he just happened to click on the accommodation portal and suddenly it was open having been closed before. So ds could at least try?

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 17:43

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn

Popcorn the accommodation booking slot email has not come out for all yet. We haven't had it. but you may be able to log into the accommodation portal.

Heifer · 06/09/2022 17:43

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn You get to pick when although not sure if the slots get filled up or not. Everything seemed available just now.

@Oblomov22 We also received generic emails saying they know they had problems and were working on it and would email again when fixed, then DD got an email asking her to sort IT account and it did work but faff.

EspeciallyDivided · 06/09/2022 17:43

Sorry to hear about all the admin hassle, similarly here, we have spent a lot of time on it this week, DS is mainly doing it but has needed me by his side to help work some of it out (passwords, portals etc). He had an online form to send off for arranging his DSA mentoring last night which took a while as the supporting docs were all in my folders not his, I am going to set up a shared cloud folder with him for things like this. Then it came back with yet another form to fill in. Today he has downloaded Office apps to his laptop and logged on, he needs to do the same for his Ipad. Then finish his registration (photo, passport check etc).

He has just been sent all his moving in day information, they need to take all their electronics to a hall for PAT testing so he needs to pack all those together, will try and find a crate. Things like the charger for his electric shaver which I hadn’t really thought about (he uses the same model as DH and they share a charger, hopefully we put the other one somewhere safe).

Sorry to hear about DD @mummyinbeds glad DS got her to hospital OK and hope she doesn’t suffer too much.

Heifer · 06/09/2022 17:45

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/09/2022 17:41

@Heifer medical centre???

You couldn't sign up to the medical centre (switching doctors) until you had a full address. I just wanted to make sure it was done before I forgot about it.

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 17:47

Good Heifer. We went for Thursday 10-11. Ds is in D block. He says everyone he knows (who he's met online recently from the Rutland chat. Plus one boy from his school who is also doing PwC Accountancy as ds told him about it) are all in K block.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/09/2022 17:49

Thanks all! I have gone on the portal and booked Thursday 12-1pm as this will allow us to get there without leaving at the crack of dawn!

tryingmybest13 · 06/09/2022 17:50

It is really exiting reading through all of this! I am back at work and nudging Ds to sort out his bank account - he has a Barclays so hoping they can just change it to a student account! Think most things are sorted. Still got a few things to get..seems to never end,

Oh and some good news. School just rang DS: his A level politics has shifted up a grade and they say by quite a way! AQA.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/09/2022 17:59

That's great news @tryingmybest13 !

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/09/2022 18:01

Has any Notts folks signed up for the daily bites card for lunches? I have clicked on the link but it's not connecting to anything.

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 18:07

No Popcorn. Ds says he thought that couldn't be done yet.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/09/2022 18:10

Ah OK, it was part of the accommodation induction so just assumed it would work.

singingstones · 06/09/2022 18:14

Should we set up a separate thread for all the Nottingham shenanigans, it must be quite tedious for everyone else as Heifer says

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 18:16

Agree.I feel bad for non Nottingham'ers.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/09/2022 18:17

Sorry for spamming! 😬

Heifer · 06/09/2022 18:24

mummyinbeds · 06/09/2022 11:48

I tried to talk DS through paying the Notts deposit last night. I thought it was going smoothly until he needed to do a fraud confirmation in his card and he hasn't set up the app on his student account yet. He was going to sort it today but is now taking DD to A&E as she has tested positive for Malaria (on a test like a Covid test). I feel a little bit helpless on my Greek beach 😣

Hope all went ok at A&E, how is your DD feeling?
