Thread 39 - Covid Cohort - Our Adult Children Now Post 18

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 30/08/2022 18:01

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and support to be had !

Hm DS has had an email about his Notts IT account - saying that he recently tried to create his email account (he didn't because he hasn't had any instructions), that he can't get access to the Hub without it (he can), and that he won't be able to pay his deposit (already done). So they have extended the deadline for deposits until Friday and will email again this afternoon with more information. 🤔
(This applies to Rutland also btw.)

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 10:41

@singingstones

Singing, Ds1 maintains he has paid deposit and 1st term (don't ask, he said he wanted to!). He says he's got his hub, he signed into accommodation, he's done IT, he's done the photo. he claims he's done everything.

But we've still had no email re-accommodation. Today. By the 6th they said. and the woman promised me it be here by the 6th. I want to book Rutland and I want to move him in on the Thursday definitely not the Saturday (because I'm away for the weekend with 'the girls') so the Friday at the worst I could just about do so I want him to book Thursday and I want him to do it today and I'm just getting a bit narked about the whole thing.

Or just feels incredibly painful.

singingstones · 06/09/2022 10:47

Fingers crossed you get the accommodation email any minute now @Oblomov22 - it is getting very late.

Their IT systems seem a bit of a shitshow!

crazycrofter · 06/09/2022 10:50

I don't think dd has had an email about IT yet. But she paid her deposit ok. I'm wondering when we should move her in. Ideally I'd do it on the Saturday as I've got no more annual leave until 1 Oct (but I know my manager would be flexible) but I'm not sure if dd would like to arrive last. If everyone on her corridor has been there two days she might feel like she's missed out. I wonder how catering works over those few days? Will they have meals provided on the Thursday and Friday? Dd keeps reading terrible reviews of the food in Rutland!

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 11:04

I'm on hold to an accommodation agent, for over 10 minutes already. Getting nowhere.

Heifer · 06/09/2022 11:40

DD not yet done ID card photo, have paid £250 and had confirmaton, haven't yet had email re setting up IT (did get the same email saying it wasn't working) waiting for email to apply for moving in slot...

Same dilemma here re when to move in (if given options). DD has decided either later Thursday or Friday lunch time (it will take DH and DD 2.45 hrs in the van and I will be catching the train (2 seater small van).. Saturday would work best for DH and me, but we are willing to move things around if she can get earlier. I get why she doesn't want to be 2 days later than others, although no way of knowing what others are doing anyway - or just how much of an option she will even get.

mummyinbeds · 06/09/2022 11:48

I tried to talk DS through paying the Notts deposit last night. I thought it was going smoothly until he needed to do a fraud confirmation in his card and he hasn't set up the app on his student account yet. He was going to sort it today but is now taking DD to A&E as she has tested positive for Malaria (on a test like a Covid test). I feel a little bit helpless on my Greek beach 😣

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 11:50

Spoke / webchat to accommodation. Email will be sent on 6th. Or the next few days. They are now saying.

Angry How vague is that?

Not happy.

Monkey2001 · 06/09/2022 12:32

@mummyinbeds sorry to hear about the Malaria, I hope it is mild if she has been taking the anti-Malaria drugs. Must be awful trying to be on holiday whilst you want to be there for your DC.

@Fiddlersgreen I think we are going to Leicester Open Day on 17th, I guess it is too close to start for you to want to go, but if you are not too far and want to find out about everything, you could think about it.

Fiddlersgreen · 06/09/2022 13:10

@Monkey2001 thanks for letting me know! I will look into it

Fruitygal · 06/09/2022 13:12

@mummyinbeds hope the malaria is mild straightforward to treat and DS sounds very responsible.

@Monkey2001 loved Leicester open day - which subject ?

GoldenRuby · 06/09/2022 15:30

DD is really pleased as Durham have let her switch her course to Combined Honours in Social Science (from Anthropology & Sociology). She will stick with the Anthropology modules but will probably swap out a sociology module for geography. She just needs to work out how to do that of their system now.

KingscoteStaff · 06/09/2022 16:09

Is DD first to leave - tomorrow mid morning!

She has packed one bag for Hockey preseason and has left a maHOOsive pile of clothes/shoes/fairy lights and saucepans for us to bring up in 10 days' time!

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 16:33

Thanks @Oblomov22 DS is trying to log in now. He left his sister in A&E hours cos he doesn't like hospitals 🙄

crazycrofter · 06/09/2022 16:55

Thanks @Oblomov22 , dd is out with friends so she won't be able to book till later. I'm not too fussed which day she goes for to be honest. I think she'll probably want to double check with the friend who's also in Rutland to see when she's arriving.

Ds is currently making speedy (and probably low quality) progress through his sixth form transition work. Hope the malaria gets sorted @mummyinbeds !

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/09/2022 16:56

Thanks for the new thread @CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee and@singingstones

I've just spent several hours with DS trying to get all his online Notts stuff sorted. I can no longer access his emails and so have been reliant on him telling me when something comes in. he's been away for the past week and has pretty much not looked at them. I've just had to fork out the entire terms accommodation fees as it was due by tomorrow - there's me thinking I'm just paying the £250 deposit! 😱

crazycrofter · 06/09/2022 16:56

Good luck to your dd @KingscoteStaff ! When does actual freshers week start?

omnishambles · 06/09/2022 16:59

@singingstones haven't we already booked a day and time - so very confused!

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 17:04

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn
Sorry Popcorn, I missed you off the Notts list.

mummyinbeds · 06/09/2022 17:04

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn I think you did only have to pay £250 by entering the amount you wanted to pay.

@Oblomov22 does DS need to do all the other registration and IT stuff before he can do the accomodation one. He's getting confused and I can't help much via text. He says it needs a username that he doesn't think he has?🤷

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 17:10

Omni I think you and singing already have, it was us Rutland lot today.

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 17:13

Mummy, ds said the IT part, also the hub part etc was horrific and he needed 3 different log in details. Then it crashed. And some haven't been able to complete it.

Do you want my ds to write him a couple of suggestions of things to try?

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 17:15

@mummyinbeds

Mummy I asked ds and he says he THINKS not. He's not sure. but he thinks you don't need to necessarily do the IT bit first.

you simply need your email address that you signed up to the accommodation portal.

mummyinbeds · 06/09/2022 17:24

@Oblomov22 thanks. He's tying himself in knots with the IT stuff. I'll get him to try the accomodation but again.
