Thread 39 - Covid Cohort - Our Adult Children Now Post 18

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 30/08/2022 18:01

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and support to be had !

It is really exiting reading through all of this! I am back at work and nudging Ds to sort out his bank account - he has a Barclays so hoping they can just change it to a student account! Think most things are sorted. Still got a few things to get..seems to never end,

Oh and some good news. School just rang DS: his A level politics has shifted up a grade and they say by quite a way! AQA.

Great news :-)

Heifer · 06/09/2022 18:35

re setting up a separate group for Nottinghamers, I would have thought that once DDs/DSs all set up we wouldn't be posting quite so much specific to Nottingham? Some of this might be useful to others? I don't know - I think we might need the others to be honest and tell us if we've annoyed them :-) come on out who ever is brave enough - I certainly won't be offended if anyone wants to tell us the truth and to tellus to get our own room :-)

mummyinbeds · 06/09/2022 18:35

Okay, I managed to sort DS's accomodation slot out. He couldn't log in but I could 😂🤷 Thursday 12-1 (might bump into @JustHereWithMyPopcorn ) DS likes his room number because it's a nice round number. Strange boy 🤣 He's in A

DD is on her way home. They've sent her bloods for further analysis and she has a raised liver function. She has to call the GP for more tests on Friday. I'll be home early hours of Friday morning so looks like a busy day of fighting doctors receptionists, a pile of washing and Nottingham IT.

ealingwestmum · 06/09/2022 18:39

I don’t mind hearing about Nottingham’ers at all.

I may be Billy no mates anyway end of this week if luck goes DD’s way. I’ve resisted joining into the Durham shenanigans, may even be mourning a bit if truth be known, but it’s not down to me. So you guys are keeping me occupied!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/09/2022 18:41

@mummyinbeds I'm sorry about your DD, I hope she gets well soon. I don't know enough about Malaria to know if it can be mild and easily recoverable but I really hope so.

tryingmybest13 · 06/09/2022 18:58

Thanks @JustHereWithMyPopcorn !

tryingmybest13 · 06/09/2022 19:00

Thanks @Heifer ! We are waiting for the marks grade breakdown but told two papers went up 'substantially. 'Blimey.

Sorry @ealingwestmum I may not be up to date, is your DD wanting to go to Durham earlier than you thought or have I completely missed something (sorry if that's the case). You're never be Billy no mates whilst we have this thread going :-)

singingstones · 06/09/2022 19:12

We have done IT set up and online registration (I think). WTF were those password rules 🤦‍♀️

If he already has MS Office on his laptop via school is there any point in getting MS365 from the uni? I mean might he not get uni emails or something, I have no idea about this!

Monkey2001 · 06/09/2022 19:15

@Fruitygal Medicine. I think DS will apply to Newcastle, Sheffield, Leicester and one other. He is limited by not doing Biology, not wanting London and not wanting traditional (which means not worth doing BMAT), not keen to apply to Manchester again as the interview experience was very annoying! I think that leaves UEA as the 4th. Have to narrow it down somehow!

Benjispruce4 · 06/09/2022 19:16

Well we have heard nothing about DD’s room at NTU or move in day and as we are just home from holiday on Sunday, have bought nothing yet. She doesn’t bring the subject up and seems to have no interest in getting things. All she wants to do is see her bf at every opportunity . I am not pushing anything as it has to be her decision. Freshers is a week on Friday!!!

EspeciallyDivided · 06/09/2022 19:23

Great news @tryingmybest13

Another vote for the Nottinghammers staying here, I'm quite happy to hear what's happening there.

@singingstones definitely need to use the uni office365, the school will close down his account at some point and any work he saves would be on the school system not the uni one. Also getting the emails. If he has saved anything he wants to keep on the school system he needs to move it elsewhere ASAP.

It has occurred to me that our cohort probably have a head start on all but the last two years students in using Teams etc.

PhotoDad · 06/09/2022 19:25

Nottingham sounds like a real pain.
Good luck to @KingscoteStaff!
I am taking DD down this Thursday as my DW who had planned to do so is poorly. I'm a teacher and have set cover work... luckily colleagues seem pretty understanding. 4 hours there and 4 hours back in a day, then back to work on Friday, what could possibly go wrong?

Monkey2001 · 06/09/2022 19:26

@tryingmybest13 great news, will be interested to hear how much is "substantial".

I am happy to hear Nottingham stuff, DS's GF going there so I have used some nuggets of info from here. She is going to Broadgate Park, but does not have a room number yet. I hope she does not get a flat with just 1 toilet/bathroom between 5 - I really think they should have separate toilet too!

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 19:27

That is good news trying. Does that affect anything, or just that he's more content?

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 19:30

Ealing, no Billy no mates for you. We won't allow it! Tell us all about dd's Durham antics. You know I loved Durham, I like to hear all about it.

singingstones · 06/09/2022 19:36

Thank you for the MS365 advice, I will pursue that tomorrow. And for letting us air the endless Nottingham IT nightmare 😱

ProggyMat · 06/09/2022 19:48

@ealingwestmum DDs friend is also waiting for TCD, good luck! 🍀🍀
The Notts shenanigans sounds very stressful but it seems all are hopefully nearly over the ‘finish line’ ?
DD doesn’t have to pay a (refundable) deposit upfront but it is added to her first invoice which due 3 weeks after she starts.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 06/09/2022 19:52

Good luck to your DD, Kingscote - hope everything goes smoothly.

Your poor DD, mummyinbeds. I had no idea you could contract malaria so long after coming into contact with it. I hope she’ll be ok and you can still enjoy your holiday.

Thats fantastic news, tryingmybest, but “by a substantial amount” sounds a bit shocking. DD’s English teacher has looked at her scripts and suggested a review, so we’ll put in the lowest scoring paper and see what happens.

Reading all the Notts stuff is making me (more) anxious. DD has essentially switched off from all uni stuff, so I have no idea what she should have done and hasn’t. She has been so difficult to deal with since coming back from Reading - not sure if the realisation of the end of summer fun and the start of the next chapter has hit her.

ealingwestmum · 06/09/2022 19:58

Oblomov, that’s partly the issue; we all love Durham too, she would be joining GoldenRuby’s DD at same college too, offer has been accepted.

But, she’s quietly waiting for this Thurs when she’ll hear whether she’s got a place on her first choice course at TCD, at which stage, she withdraws from Durham.

btw it’s not a bad dilemma, just the last few days are getting angsty. And we’ve booked flights for 15th sept. Thank you Proggy, hope your DD’s friend hears positively too, Ireland’s 2022 leaving certificate results make UK’s grade inflation look like peanuts!

ealingwestmum · 06/09/2022 20:00

tryingmybest that's a phenomenal result. Shame he had to go through that though.

singingstones · 06/09/2022 20:10

Good luck tomorrow Kingscote and for Thursday PhotoDad and ealing, things are happening!

Heifer · 06/09/2022 20:11

KingscoteStaff · 06/09/2022 16:09

Is DD first to leave - tomorrow mid morning!

She has packed one bag for Hockey preseason and has left a maHOOsive pile of clothes/shoes/fairy lights and saucepans for us to bring up in 10 days' time!

Good luck tomorrow. Hope all goes well. Great for her to be able to go to preseason training. DD will be trying to get in a team at Nottingham but they have a trial day during welcome week (she isn't going out the night before apparently - famous last words :-)

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 20:15

Well I am relieved re Nottingham moving in day. Phew. Now nothing else matters (to me, now, iykwim).

Oblomov22 · 06/09/2022 20:17

Good luck kings and photo for dc off this week.
