My top tip, use dry nights sheets on your car seats or pram to minimise damage to car seats and prams.

I agree with you Cod on telling them to go, not asking, and on being prepared for loads of messes.

But I have a golden rule too which some mums might like to remember (I have potty trained three children so far) and that is this:

when you get to three wet pants in any one day, give up for that day and start again the next day. I started that rule when I was potty training my first and the wet pants were moreorless continuous. I decided it was necessary for my piece of mind! (and none of mine took more than a couple of weeks from nappies to completely dry pants- day and night)

PMSL Cod! I know, I know, maybe I'll start tomorrow...but I can't, I can't get Jools to do it...can I?

CountessDracula · 08/08/2005 21:11

oh god my dd is 2.10 and the Paed has said NOT to potty train her (she has had v bad constipation that has led to her witholding poo etc, is now on good medication but will not go near loo/potty and he has said that forcing it may make it much worse) I keep getting funny looks and comments becasue she is still in nappies. AARRGGHH

He is in pull-ups but they have elephants on (pampers). Oh bugger, I really need to do it don't I. Ds1 only took 3 days and never had an accident since - SO lucky! Got a feeling ds2 will be harder cos he's mega lazy

nutcracker · 08/08/2005 21:12

Have just started this with Ds too with mixed results.

CD, my dd had a constipation problem too: for over a year she screamed and screamed each time she did a poo. I waited until she was free from that (until she was 3) as I didn't want her to have any painful experiences to link with the potty.

MaryP0p1 · 08/08/2005 21:15

My favourite embarrassing toilet incidents, in Woolworths at closing time just before going out with the family (including aunts and uncle etc...). DS straining face doing a poo in the shop and boy does he smell. I had to buy a pair of trousers and threw the rest away. Yuck not pretty

Lonelymum · 08/08/2005 21:16

GDG, I would tell your mother that ds was into potty training and that you only want her to "continue" with it With any luck, by the time you get ds back, she might have done the job for you!

clary · 08/08/2005 21:21

Have had such a huge success on this with ds2, he was 2 in April and very interested from just before his birthday, really he got it very quickly.
We were on hols last week and he had no accidents so I was really pleased. He now goes and gets potty and sits on it.
Just wanted to say, ligth at end of tunnel. Hurrah!
DS1 y?see tho out of nappies at 2.6mo was very unreliable and accident prone for months if not longer.
DD was very reliable once she agreed to do it but that wasn?t until she was 2.6 too.
Gdg, lol at yr ds, ?nice nappy?, bless.
In the park with a pal today whose ds3 is a month younger than my ds2 and we were both congratulating ourselves on boys excellent ability to wee standign up in bushes etc, girls much harder to deal with, coddy is right about that.

Gobbledigook · 08/08/2005 21:22

I just can't face going back to taking spare clothes and plastic bags with me everywhere!!!

Blimey got ds3 to do after ds2 as well!

Lonelymum · 08/08/2005 21:24

I have to admit, that if I had to take my children somewhere (and let's face it, you do when the one you are potty training is not yur oldest) I would just shove a nappy back on for the duration of that trip.

MaryP0p1 · 08/08/2005 21:25

Putting a nappy on for trips always completely confused mine. It was a all or nothing thing for me.

Gobbledigook · 08/08/2005 21:27

Me too Mary - once they're off, they're off and i don't ever put a pull up back on (except for bed)
