would you say something if you saw a baby without a hat in this weather in the park?

not sure if it was the baby's mother maybe it was a nanny but the baby was crawling in the park without clothes on and NO hat it was probably 30 degrees today in London, I was so cross I left. Should I have said something? I know it's none of my business but...

QueenOfQuotes · 14/07/2005 21:45

."seen so many small babies in prams with bare legs and arms and no sun lotion.....makes me want to scream...."

How do you know they have no sun lotion - do you ask the parents or check their bags???

As for the first post - no I wouldn't have said anyting, I've got one hat lover, and one hat hater........the youngest being the hat hater - it stays on for about 10 seconds (if we're lucky).

Cainsmum · 14/07/2005 21:45

Thanks I will have a look, and get some for me too. I am a bit pink at the moment, so busy fussing over ds i forgot about me. I tend to burn as soon as i go out in the sun.

QueenOfQuotes · 14/07/2005 21:48

What really irks me is the comments and looks I get from some people who I see reguarly - especially this summer as the boys have become visibly 'darker'. They assume that they're not wearing sun lotion and that they're getting 'tanned'

  • no actually they're mixed race and as often happens with mixed race children the sun (even with sun cream) brings out more of the dark pigments - quite incredible the change in DS2 this summer in particular - there was me thinking I'd got one 'dark' and one 'light' child - and DS2 is nearly darker than his brother.
hunkermunker · 14/07/2005 21:50

The cream I use on DS stays white. It means that other mothers don't judge me (except when DS pulls their children's hats off).

Hulababy · 14/07/2005 21:51

DD (3y) has worn factor 40 all summer so far, including whilst we were on holiday. it was topped up at least every two hours, or more often if in water (topped up as she got out)/ Yet she is still tanned, especially her arms. her face is covered in freckles too - very cute! She has not burnt at all though.

expatinscotland · 14/07/2005 21:52

DD is always covered in sun spray and lotion on her face. She is too milky-white to go w/o.

nailpolish · 14/07/2005 21:52

hula, when do freckles appear? both me and dh are freckly, and i keep waiting for dd's to get some too!

Thomcat · 14/07/2005 21:53

My DD never has a hat on, there's always one in the bag where i've tried and tried but it never ever stays on.

I use suntan lotion on her but I'm not the type who thinks to put it on when it's cloudy but warm tbh, but L has never gone so much as a pale shade of pink so....

If someone tutted cos L wasn't wearing a hat I'd be tempted to have it out with them on what they would do to keep the hat on and proabbly end of telling them to get their own life.

WideWebWitch · 14/07/2005 21:53

It's none of your business and you don't know the facts so no, I don't think you shoudl have said anything.

Hulababy · 14/07/2005 21:53

TBH not sure. i can't really remember DD having them before. But this ysummer she has developed loads over her nose on her cheeks. She is 3y 3m. Looks so cute on her. I have tons too - not so cute

nailpolish · 14/07/2005 21:56

i love freckles! she has one on her leg and shows it to everyone.

Hulababy · 14/07/2005 21:58

Aw bless. DD thought her first freckle was a poorly. She likes tem now though, as eveyone say they make her look even more pretty. Not that she is vain or anything. LOL!

Turtle35 · 14/07/2005 21:58

I really didn't start this thread the way I meant, I was actually trying to say it annoys me when I see a baby without a hat for so long, it was an hour in the park in the sun and NO attempt to put any hat on (or sunscreen), I would NEVER of said anything probably because I dont have the guts, let alone think that it WAS my business.

edodgy · 14/07/2005 22:00

My dd got a few freckles on her cheeks last summer when she was about 17 months but they were so small and didnt really look like normal freckles that i panicked and thought she had meningitus at first as the spots didnt dissappear

nailpolish · 14/07/2005 22:00

turtle darling, dont worry! its the maternal in you, bet when you left the park you wanted to take the babe with you. i get that in shops when i hear a baby cry, just want to shout out "feed that baby!"

fqueenzebra · 14/07/2005 22:01

um.... tanned skin is thicker than untanned skin. Being thicker causes the skin to provide more natural protection against the skin-cancer sun-rays. Also, having a tan makes it less likely that you will get burnt (and thus incur all the damage to the skin, including to DNA, that getting burnt causes).

I would rather my kids had a light-medium tan than none at all... so I don't always put on cream them nowadays, even if they are out in the bright hot sun for a short period...

[runs away and hides, now]

fqueenzebra · 14/07/2005 22:02

( ps -- wouldn't say anything to the original parent, though, mostly because it just wouldn't be well-received )

fishfinger · 14/07/2005 22:03

no mine woudl never wear hats
ever

fishfinger · 14/07/2005 22:04

zebar
mine are tanned
they look lovely

spidermama · 14/07/2005 22:05

Wow FQZ that's contraversial. I hardly dare admit that I agree with you after the slating I got on another thread today. But I do.

However, Turtle, I think nailpolish is right and you're having good and healthy, maternal feelings towards a baby you felt was not being properly looked after.
