would you say something if you saw a baby without a hat in this weather in the park?

not sure if it was the baby's mother maybe it was a nanny but the baby was crawling in the park without clothes on and NO hat it was probably 30 degrees today in London, I was so cross I left. Should I have said something? I know it's none of my business but...

Turtle i'm also hypersensitive since i've had DS. Personally I would have just given her a dirty look then left. Yes I know the baby could have been protected/creamed up/hat thrower and it's none of my business but I still would have done it.

On hols a woman remarked to her friend " look at that baby in the pushchair without a hat" - not knowing that I would understand her. Told her to mind her own nosey business. My dd wouldn't wear her hat, had loads of sun cream on, she was in my shade, plus was going fast from shady bit to shady bit. That busybody really upset me as I look after my kids fine.

tiffini · 14/07/2005 21:24

My twins will not wear a sunhat either, I plaster them in sunblock, but their hair is very fine so I am worried about their heads getting sunburned, so while it is very hot I dare not let them go out in the sun for very long periods.

Anyone got ant tips on what I could do, they would look pretty sillt with sun block rubbed into their hair, besides washing it out would'nt be easy.

No , but i would want to jump and scream. In Australia they would assault you with suncream and make you feel like you were commtting child abuse.

tiffini · 14/07/2005 21:24

silly, not sillt

beansprout · 14/07/2005 21:26

As far as ds is concerned, his hat is just some sort of frizbee I insist on putting on his head. He will NOT wear it if he doesn't want to. That said, he isn't left to the mercy of the sun, as other measures are taken.

nailpolish · 14/07/2005 21:27

tiffini, how old are the twins? if you are really worried, put block on their heads, i know it looks daft but does that matter?

if they are in a buggy maybe you could get a parasol

Blackduck · 14/07/2005 21:27

don't get me started...seen so many small babies in prams with bare legs and arms and no sun lotion.....makes me want to scream....

Turtle35 · 14/07/2005 21:27

my dd wont wear a hat either but I have tricked her with a big floppy one that ties up under the chin, I am sure it wont last though

DS even takes hats off other babies who are happily wearing them

nailpolish · 14/07/2005 21:28

blackduck how do you know theyre not wearing suncream?

Nemo1977 · 14/07/2005 21:29

i wouldnt but only because i know 9 times out of 10 ds will refuse to wear a hat and throws it off

Hulababy · 14/07/2005 21:30

DD would never keep hats on either - still doesn't. But she always had suncream on, and sprayed over her hair too (as was very thin when tiny). But to look at her you'd not know she has sun cream on as it goes transparent. But I knew it was on.

I wouldn't say anything TBH, as you never know the full story.

tiffini · 14/07/2005 21:31

they are 19 months, and luckily in the buggy most of the time, but they do love to get out and run around the park.

The problem with putting it on their heads is, they suffer from exzema so the only sunblocks i have been able to fing that are suitable are very thick and hard enough to rub into the skin let alone the hair, and washing it out would be torture for them.

expatinscotland · 14/07/2005 21:31

No hat? DD REFUSES to wear a hat. Ever. It could be bloody Baltic outside, and she yanks off her hood or hat and screams blue murder if you try to keep it on her.

Blackduck · 14/07/2005 21:31

nailpolish - no 'sheen' IYKWIM or no whiteness...just starting to pink up........so many people seem to think putting an umbrella up is enough...

Twiglett · 14/07/2005 21:32

I think you wouldn't want to be near me then .. I have a hat-thrower (DD 14 months) and a hat refuser (DS 4 years)

misdee · 14/07/2005 21:32

i dont put a hat on dd3 as she gets so hot and sweaty with one on. does that make me a bad mum? she is usually in just a nappy (with suncream on) as well.

nailpolish · 14/07/2005 21:34

blackduck, thats daft - its impossible to tell if a baby has suncream on or not, unless you have a close inspection. and they could be pink from heat, not always sunburn

spidermama · 14/07/2005 21:35

I understand your concern turtle. I remember seeing a baby with bare legs and feet on a really freezing day, then worrying about it for hours afterwards, wishing I'd said something.

That said, I've been known to let my baby out in the sun with no hat as long as it's only for half an hour or so max'. I tend to make sure he stays in the shade whenever poss.

misdee · 14/07/2005 21:36

suncream should be applied 30mins before exposure to the sun, so by that time they arent visably 'creamed up'

tiffini · 14/07/2005 21:36

My DS (4yrs)loves his cap, We lost it yesterday so I told him I would buy him a new one while he was in nursery.

The poor love cried all the way to nursery saying 'mummy the sun is making my head too hot'

bless him

Blackduck · 14/07/2005 21:37

NP beg to differ, but there you go...

Turtle35 · 14/07/2005 21:39

I sure didnt' mean to cause upset on this thread, I should of started a thread on "how to keep a hat on your baby" thread, clearly there is a market for a new invention...

hi my ds is 13 weeks I keep him out of the sun but still worry about him. Do any of you know of a cream for this age most say over 6 months on the bottle.
