What are you calling your daughter's fanjo?

I was brought up with 'fanny' but that grosses people out these days. Lots of friends use 'nunny' which grosses me out.

What is the girl equivalent of the word 'willy' - what are you all using with your DDs?

I don't see the harm in a NN at all when they are very young. I don't have a problem with the word vulva, it's just that toddlers have all sorts of NNs for things so why should genitals be any different.

DS,now 5, knows full well his willy is a penis and usually refers to it as such. He had no problem understanding when I explained the proper name for his willy was a penis just like the proper name for the tv was the television. I don't envisage having any problems with my DDs either.

Tuppence

GrimmaTheNome · 10/06/2009 23:16

I use 'inbetweenoes' , which is what my mum called them.

I can't resist replying to these threads though they pain me.

What's wrong with the word vulva? Why the need for nicknames? It isn't a dirty word and it isn't a dirty part of the body, nothing to be ashamed of imho.

TheFallenMadonna · 10/06/2009 23:35

simpson - if your DS is wonderng where his sister wee from then the word vagina (or variant of it) isn't actually going to help him at all. In fact, he could end up a bit confused.

simpson · 10/06/2009 23:41

thefallenmadonna - do you think so?

have shown him her bits in bath iyswim...just have avoided naming it

Came a bit out of the blue and wasn't prepared..

TheFallenMadonna · 10/06/2009 23:43

There isn't an it. There's a them really. She doesn't wee through her vagina. DD refers to her wee-hole and her baby-hole (getting slightly ahead of herself there). I say vulva. DH says bits for both her and DS

alittleteapot · 10/06/2009 23:45

Thunderduck, my thing about vulva is you wouldn't go around calling your kneecap a patella. I don't think using a nickname is implying the area or proper name is dirty, just that it's very formal and also, in the case of us girls, there isn't really a single word that describe the whole lot anyway. I've been racking my brains about all this and have decided to offer up a few different names including the proper ones and she can decide!

TheFallenMadonna · 10/06/2009 23:46

IME young children are more interested (like your DS) in the weeing. As parents we often tend to be more focused on the reproductive aspects. It can cause some confusion later on I think.

Thunderduck · 10/06/2009 23:46

..whispers I call it a patella because I don't like the word kneecap.

alittleteapot · 10/06/2009 23:50

well then Thunderduck in your house vulva is wholly appropriate! though you should probably be introducing urethra too although that's really the tube from bladder out isn't it. Is there an actual word for the wee hole???

alittleteapot · 10/06/2009 23:54

Jeez, can't believe I just googled that. it's the oriface of the urethra. There you go girls, what's your problem?

Thunderduck · 10/06/2009 23:57

I don't think of vulva as very formal, but I don't think of the use of formal terms to be a bad thing, but then I am a science geek.

There is no word that covers the lot but the vulva comes pretty close, as it covers the external genitalia including the clitoris, labia majora and labia minora.

daisy99divine · 10/06/2009 23:59

LOL teapot!
Orifice it is, can see that being sublimely straight forward

Pingpong · 11/06/2009 00:03

DD has a doo-da.
She's only one.
I think the biology lessons can wait for now.

tryingtoleave · 11/06/2009 04:31

Genis (girl-penis). How freudian is that?

Wallace · 11/06/2009 06:39

We use "girl's bits" or "girly bits"

About "minky" - to me that word means dirty/disgusting, sort of a cross between manky and minging.

broguemum · 11/06/2009 06:57

I think that the word quim deserves to be resurrected. We have tried to introduce it in this house but DD still refers to her vulva as a willy and to DS's penis as a dangly willy.

nikki1978 · 11/06/2009 08:01

I call it her front bottom. Her grandma calls it her daisy. My best friend tells her daughter it is a foo-foo but my daughters favourite book is called Little Rabbit Foo Foo so I can't get on board with that. I don't like front bottom though but I couldn't think of anything else when put on the spot!

Northumberlandlass · 11/06/2009 08:17

I only have a DS (nearly 6) and he has a willy, but knows the correct term is penis. His testicle are another matter, we have balls, goolies, nuts and knackers!!!

Anyway back to girly bits, he keeps asking what my bits are called and I really can't decide. From the usual excellent replies on here - I suppose minky is better than nothing, but someone else I know calls it her twinkle which I don't mind either.

DS knows I have a selection of holes - I wasn't sure how else to explain it... one for wee, one for babies and one for poo !!!

xx

weegiemum · 11/06/2009 08:20

For our dds we refer to "front bottom"

Ds has decided that he has "middles"

e.g. my friend hit me in the middles!

SO we have gone with that!

mamamila · 11/06/2009 08:34

i've been saying poonani but now dd's starting to talk i keep thinking i should find a better word for her to learn

me and ds were discussing this last week and dd overheard 'penis' and repeated it loudly all day

shootfromthehip · 11/06/2009 08:40

I normally call it her 'bits' too but have been saying that she needs to wash her vagina of late, much to her 5 yr old amusement! Funny how they find stuff embarassing and funny despite me treating the subject with dignity .

The boys have 'diddles' in our family but penis is also used less frequently.

MinaLoy · 11/06/2009 08:43

Fanny, of course. I'm bewildered at all your cute nick-names. What is the "horrible connotation" of fanny?

PatTheHammer · 11/06/2009 09:00

Love the mention of Greys anatomys Dr Bailey, I love calling it a va-jay-jay!!

Unfortunately when DD asked what it was called I was caught off-guard and my head was completely empty. I could only think of foo-foo and I did NOT want her saying that! So I told her it was a vagina, hoping she would forget. She didn't. Cue a 18 mth old calling it a 'gina' (rhymes with China). She is now turned 3 and still calls it that. Someone gave her a barbie for her birthday and the first thing she did was take off Barbie's bikini and ask where her 'gina was

Oh and she knows that babies come out of the 'gina but wee comes out just above it! How i don't know, but she informed me of this just before I was about to have DS!
