What are you calling your daughter's fanjo?

I was brought up with 'fanny' but that grosses people out these days. Lots of friends use 'nunny' which grosses me out.

What is the girl equivalent of the word 'willy' - what are you all using with your DDs?

I've been thinking I might use 'TUSHY'

Whaadyathink?

hercules1 · 11/06/2009 15:49

because you end up with a generation of women who dont like calling their vulva/vagina a vulva/vagina as they find it embarrassing!

BonzoDoodah · 11/06/2009 15:51

This whole thing had me stressing when my DD was born. Boys have a universally understood, non-medical name for their genitals so why the hell don't girls? Why can't they just say "Fanny" or whatever and it have the same implication as Willy? Boys don't call it their penis and scrotum and I don't see why girls should have to use vagina or labia to get understood. It's not being prude about those words - more a matter of equality and non-sexualisation.

I asked all my friends and did lots of reading and eventually we decided to use fanny - although it is still a bit vulgar sounding. I can't be doing with flower and twinkle as they are a bit twee for me - and a tuppence (FFS!) the child has to be able to say the word and someone actually know what they're talking about. I used "minnie" as a child - but a mini what? Didn't want to use that for DD.

Having been on MN now - I could cope with fanjo ... and gina is quite good too.

No I don't think so, as a child I used tuppence, at 6, 8, 10 years old I would have been very embarresed to call it anything else, but now I don't.

Its a growing up thing, younger versions are needed imo and don't cause embaressment later on in life.

I call it a Mary. My 19 month old DD calls is a Memy. Sooo sweet!

Bleatblurt · 11/06/2009 18:11

Vulva.

I am 28 years old and still cringe when having to discuss down there with a dr. I blame this on my parents not telling me proper names and making me grow up calling it "down there" and it being something NEVER spoken about. I do not want that for my children.

My DS's are told the correct words for girls and boys genitalia and I make myself talk about it properly when asked and not hurry to change the conversation like my parents did.

PatTheHammer · 11/06/2009 18:32

LOL Myredcardigan Never thought of it like that!

I have a friend called Mary.......will snigger to myself when I see her tomorrow

Disenchanted My DH was called 'tuppence' as a nickname by his beloved GP's !

Northumberlandlass · 11/06/2009 19:24

OK - So following reading this thread today, my DS asked tonight (as if on que) what my bits were called. So, I have taken the opportunity to ask him his thoughts ! He is 5y 9mo . So I tell him that as he knows the real term for his willy is penis and that my parts are vagina. He looked mildly interested ! I then said that we could discuss the name he would like to call it, as he didn't like the word vagina....after giving it much thought (ok 5 mins). He came up with two offerings...Pong Pong (I dismissed immediately as it sounds smelly ) then he has come up with Balls of Terror !?! . I did suggest minky (apparently sounds like a mouse) and ninky (he said sounds girly)....

I am awaiting the next suggestion...DH is crying with laughter !

Noonki · 11/06/2009 19:25

myred

nessus · 11/06/2009 19:37

LOL at Northumberlandlass pong pong does sound quite smelly

I have been made brave by this thread and I am going upstairs right now to tell DD the correct names! Or maybe not, it is bedtime soon afterall and don't want her having disturbed dreams.

One day I really need to share with you all the story of my friend's daughter who, aged 8, had to be told why it wasn't acceptable to play with her kimininunu when they had guest round

CrushWithEyeliner · 11/06/2009 19:48

Front bottom is awful imo

Wallace · 11/06/2009 19:58

Just remembered as a child our family word was a keyhole I wonder if it was a mispronounciation of "pee-hole" I must ask my mum.

beesonmummyshead · 11/06/2009 20:15

we use penny, as in "spend a penny". I used it when I was little and have no better alternative.

coffeecups · 11/06/2009 20:30

I decided to go down the factual route, though slightly anatomically incorrect route and said to my dd (now 3 1/2) it was a vagina, and this too was translated to 'gina which i kind of like. I can't stand all this fannying around about it.

This morning we did have a very funny conversation about whether babies came out of belly buttons and when told they came out of the 'gina. we went through the
'did i come out of there' 'yes'
did ds come out of your 'gina?' 'yes'
will the new baby come out of your 'gina?' 'yes'
Did daddy come out of your 'gina?' splutter as the coffee went up my nose.

myredcardigan · 11/06/2009 20:40

Actually, I'm now wondering if I should have the post deleted. If someone in an office somewhere does regular searches for mention of the 'g' word then the post could cause trouble.

myredcardigan · 11/06/2009 20:47

Reported.

womblingfree · 11/06/2009 21:01

Did anyone else have a 'winkie' then they were little?

Couldn't bring myself to use it for DD though. She had a 'toot-toot' (how it got called that I can't for the life of me remember), and now at 4.9 we've settled on girly bits. Bit unimaginative but it does the job !

claraquack · 11/06/2009 21:02

Not Fanjo that's for sure.

Urgh that's one of the words that makes me cringe on the other thread.

At the moment front bottom which, as someone else says, she at least understands.

PatTheHammer · 11/06/2009 21:05

coffeecups in the few weeks after DS was born DD proudly told all and sundry that he had come out of mummy's 'gina. Just like she did earlier! She also knows that when I was a baby I came out of Nanny's 'gina and DH out of MIL's 'gina, purely by asking question after bloody question, god only knows what goes on in her little mind

Funbags · 11/06/2009 22:25

twinkle or fairy

Welsummer · 11/06/2009 23:06

My nieces call it their "lady's area" and my daughter is continuing with this and using "man's bits" for .....the man's bits....

saggyjuju · 12/06/2009 09:42

welsummer thats a really good one wish i'd used that
