I would love to be able to play the piano.

Branster · 17/04/2005 21:13

tamum, so to get an ordinary degree would you do a different course?
say you study Environmental studies BSc(Hons) degree (as advertised by the university), you finish the course then where would you have gone wrong to only get BSc rather than BSc (hons)?

happymerryberries · 17/04/2005 21:13

How can you trade up? Can I swap a few of my O' levels for a PhD?

happymerryberries · 17/04/2005 21:15

Oxbridge secret, stay out of clink, in cash and alive for 7 years. Bung 'em some dosh and they made the BA an MA, Magic!

tamum · 17/04/2005 21:16

Branster, it's not straightforward I'm afraid. If you sign up to do an Honours degree and get an Ordinary degree it either means you've left after 3 years of a 4 year course (mainly Scotland) or that you failed to get high enough marks to get an Honours degree. Not an out-and-out fail, but not good enough to make the Honours grade.

JanH · 17/04/2005 21:16

It's automatic, moo, I only heard about it recently

marthamoo · 17/04/2005 21:16

Hey, I forgot my most recent qualification - Gold Membership of Weight Watchers

marthamoo · 17/04/2005 21:17

Well, how jammy is that? Why isn't Cardiff Uni doing it? Bloody Oxbridge..

marthamoo · 17/04/2005 21:18

Jan are you a clever Oxford/Cambridge person then?

Cam · 17/04/2005 21:18

When I was at university (97-81)you had to do a dissertation to get honours and the course was only 3 years. I got a 2:1 BA (Hons) in Anthropology and Education, but my greatest achievement was being Sixer of the Fairies abd it was nothing to do with my mum being Brown Owl

lavenderrr · 17/04/2005 21:20

learn if you can, there are few nights that I sit down afetr the children have gone to bed and dh is out and I just tinkle and I dabble with Cole Porter, Beethoven, Debussy, it's the most relaxing thing and if you can get a cheapish piano (mine cost £50 from friend) it'll cost you about £15 a lesson £60 a month but flippin worth it...best investment you could ever mske...rambling a little but sucha good thing to do imho..

marthamoo · 17/04/2005 21:20

I think I'm too old to learn something new, lav.

JanH · 17/04/2005 21:21

Not exactly, moo! I am an HND Business Studies (failed) Brighton sort of person - I wonder what I could trade that up for!

Someone told me recently about the MA conversion, can't remember who, I was gobsmacked.

lavenderrr · 17/04/2005 21:21

no way, how old are you Marthamoo?

marthamoo · 17/04/2005 21:22

I think it's cheating myself, Jan

Brighton? Cool.

ladymuck · 17/04/2005 21:22

Janh, not quite automatic! Presumably with student debt it is harder to keep out of financial trouble. But cetainly nothing meriting quasi status with anyone who has actually worked for their MA.

But yes, 7 years after you start your course you can have a 2nd graduation.

I'm also entitled to another upgrade as a chartered accountant from ACA to FCA. However that just gives them an excuse to charge more for my annual subscription.

marthamoo · 17/04/2005 21:22

35, going on 102.

Gobbledigook · 17/04/2005 21:22

mm - I'm 32 and I'm planning on learning in a few years time. I want to do what lav does. I got my piano from my auntie who is a primary school head and she was getting rid of it.

JanH · 17/04/2005 21:24

Brighton was brill, moo - which is why I failed I think! 5 failed on my course and 4 of them were from my flat so you see...

lavenderrr · 17/04/2005 21:25

which is?

Gobbledigook · 17/04/2005 21:27

? Do you mean 'I want to do what lav does'? If so, I mean tinkle on the piano, play nice music.

roisin · 17/04/2005 21:27

Sounds like you had a fantastic time Jan!

roisin · 17/04/2005 21:28

The Oxford trade-up has now stopped btw.

JanH · 17/04/2005 21:31

We were a bunch of slackers but yes, we did have a good time, roisin!

They have stopped the Oxford trade-up? When did they do that?
