I just think the grades are very telling - so many kids these days get 10 GCSEs, all at Grade A or A. When I was doing O'levels only the brightest of the bright got As and no-one got all* As.

happymerryberries · 17/04/2005 20:55

My brother don't have honours as he didn't do enough credits with the OU....could still finish it I suppose, but he is too busy being a Head of Science, wheras I'm just a plain old science teacher....shows this stuff doesn't mean that much!

marthamoo · 17/04/2005 20:57

Likewise A' levels - if you got 4 A's at A' level you were going to Oxford or Cambridge. Now practically everyone seems to get 4 A's!

our head pf Physics teaches part of the AS physics from the book I used for O level. I nearly crap myself each time she leaves it in the lab...baaaad memories

tamum · 17/04/2005 20:57

No Branster, you can get BScs and BAs without the Hons, it's an Ordinary degree.

What about people that get 5 or 6 As at A level?!!

In MY day it took 27 hours a day just to get THREE A-Levels...

happymerryberries · 17/04/2005 20:58

I went to Oxford and I didn't get all As! Dh did, clever thing!

Gobbledigook · 17/04/2005 20:58

mp - same here, I enjoyed working for my physics A level particularly and then I loved uni as that was quite hard work too. I'm right old swot!

hmb - I was a sprite too!

Can't remember the guide groups - they weren't imps and pixies though..can anyone remember?

Hula - we always say they were hard that year because they were so easy the first year but I'm sure it's rubbish!!

marthamoo · 17/04/2005 20:58

True, hmb - my brother got 5 GCSEs, no A'levels, and did a 2 year HND. He's earning a bloody fortune, has a flash company car, every new gadget going, etc. There's no justice in the world.

lavenderrr · 17/04/2005 20:59

yeh, a couple of girls at our school got all A's but they were Oxford material and were clever and very hard-working...but as a comprehensive the standards were definetely not as high as where my sister went (Bradford Girls' Grammar School).

My sister has 5 A Levels (2A, 3B) but she did one a year early (Maths). That was about 4 years ago, and in a dodgy not-so-great comp. Mind you, she did work very very hard and is bright.

JanH · 17/04/2005 21:00

Not that many really, moo - at the grammar school here (highly selective) about 10% get all A and another 10% a mixture of A and A. These are the ones the papers feature but this is not normal or average.

At the comps in Accrington - different kettle of fish altogether - less than 1% manage it. They have more with 1-3 and nothing above a C than with a string of As.

Hulababy · 17/04/2005 21:00

LOL GDG - I am not so sure either. Trying to recall my grades for GCSE???

Hulababy · 17/04/2005 21:01

BTW< our guide groups were all flowers.

Gobbledigook · 17/04/2005 21:02

Don't think I can Hula! Mostly B's I think with a couple of As but can't really remember.

Can only remember A levels onwards.

V. impressed with lav's piano - I'd LOVE to be able to play.

Hulababy · 17/04/2005 21:02

There were no A+ grades at the start of GCSEs either.

GCSEs were: 2A, 1B, 5C, 1D, 2E.

I still hate Chemistry!

marthamoo · 17/04/2005 21:02

I guess that's true, Jan - as I don't know anyone in secondary education I only have the newspaper stories about star performers to go on. And I bet when my boys are doing GCSEs I will deck anyone who suggests they are not worth the paper they are printed on

thanks, I had to have a choice between Grade 8 piano or A-levels, just couldn't do both....still play a little...anyone else play

happymerryberries · 17/04/2005 21:04

Oh and I was Head of house in my First year! I forgot that!! Goldfish house....how naff is that!?!

marthamoo · 17/04/2005 21:05

Anyone else do 16+? It was a kind of in-between qualification (a precursor of the GCSE I guess) and the idea was you took one paper and if you did well you got an O' level and if you didn't do so well you still got a CSE (rather than a fail). I've got 4, and the way they did it was I've got all 9 of my O'levels on a certificate and I've also got a CSE certificate that says I've got 4 Grade A CSEs.

happymerryberries · 17/04/2005 21:06

Oh and I have a certificate in Use of English!!! What a farce that was!

Gobbledigook · 17/04/2005 21:06

Lav, I only had a few lessons at school and really wish I'd carried on. I have a piano now and can read basic music but really want to have lessons again - will do when kids get to school and I have more time (if that really happens!).

ladymuck · 17/04/2005 21:07

Hmm, I did have a BA (Hons) but I traded it in for a MA (Oxon) after managing to avoid being jailed or made bankrupt for 7 years after matriculation.
