GENERAL CHAT THREAD FOR CLOTH NAPPY USERS - PART 3

1000 replies

BigBadMouseInHauntedHouse · 30/10/2008 19:29

(Incredibly childish) BBM sneakily makes part 3 thread and places Sandy's flag at the top for a second time.

(Flag is made from organic cotton and has been dry pailed and washed at 40C)

OP posts:

Lavender - I second the recommendation of Sandy's and airflows, they are both brilliant because of the separate poppers for legs and tum, most don't do that and it's a nightmare getting a good fit. An airflow goes over everything and doesn't have to touch the tum/legs all the way round to work so no red marks.

I find hanging to dry on a clothes horse gets them dry in 24-36h, don't put on radiator as I believe it reduces their life and makes them crunchy. Don't wash any nappies or fleece wipes with softener. The wraps can go in a 60 degree wash but 40 degrees is sufficient and will make them last longer, don't tumble.

For nights i'm using the new style Ella's House Bumhuggers which have fleece lining and pull-out tongue to make it dry quicker, they're much nicer imo than the old style. I would recommend them as not particularly bulky but very absorbent and fleece keeps bum dry so no need for extra liner.

As BabyJ said make sure you use a fleece liner on anything that doesn't already have it - either buy something like this, or use an old fleece and cut rectangles out to use.

I always put a booster in my nappies (goes between nappy and baby, so from the outside it's wrap, nappy, booster, fleece, bum.). Boosters increase the absorbency of the nappy. You can kill two birds with one stone here because lots of boosters come with a fleecy top such as these, but some people prefer to get a booster without a fleece top and use a separate fleece liner, it's just personal preference I think.

Sorry for the essay

lollipopmother · 19/11/2008 17:22

God, talk about thread killer!

ilovemydog · 19/11/2008 17:29

Has anyone seen the Pampers ads - where if you buy a pack, they will buy a vaccine for the developing world?

Is it me, or does anyone else find this outrageous?

Interested in this thread?

lollipopmother · 19/11/2008 17:41

I've seen it. I've wondered whether it's actually true that they do buy a vaccine for every pack but not found the idea outrageous, why what's your thoughts?

Took Elizabeth to Water Babies today and a lady commented on how nice her Sandy's and Airflow looked ! I noticed a baby at the baby clinic had a reusable on as well and went to have a nosey but couldn't quite see what it was, it was red AIO though and looked good, possibly a Wonderoo I thought. God, is this really what life has come to, noticing peoples' nappies?!

LavenderTea · 19/11/2008 17:57

Thanks Babyjj. Yes I have prewashed the nappies. I read that on the pop-in istructions.

Well so far so good with the pop-in. Sandy's is drying so just trying the totsbots now. Already wet through though and only been on an hour. Got my bucket and teatree and lavender oil. A nd first day of nappies already filling it.. Wasn't as difficult as I thought, though so far no poos yet, only wet ones .

Thanks lollipop. Essay was good , not a conversation stopper at all just had to scarper for the afternoon. That's really useful info.

I will check out the fleece liners sounds a good idea.

Just one more q. Sorry.

Does poo not stick to the fleece and then difficult to get off??

LT

ilovemydog · 19/11/2008 20:28

Ooooh Lavender - that's the real nappy thread equivelent of b/fing/formula comment!!!

Some use fleece liners. some use paper liners.

It depends. I use a combination of both. I didn't use any paper liners on DS until he was on solids. If your baby is b/fed, then a paper liner isn't going to make much of a difference ime.

Fleece liners do make a difference for wee, so I tend to use the old Tots Bots Fluffles boosters, with a paper liner.

But try both and see how it works for you...

BigBadMouse · 19/11/2008 20:48

Lavender - If your DD is still 100% BF (like my DS) then the fleece liner is really just ascting as a stay dry later. The poo won't come off until it is in the machine but it comes off really easily in the machine (sounds awfuk but I reckon I got just as much poo in my machine due to leaky disposables over babygros, bouncy chairs etc). Later on you may find it comes off easily - the knack is to hold the liner over the loo and pull both ends to stretch it then the poo just falls off if it is solid enough. Try both types - you may find you switch between the two depending on your DDs development stage (fleece is a cheaper option though).

I don't think you'll need to boost your Sandy's - they're pretty absorbant. DS is in a Medium airflow (on the 9th centile when I weighed him 4 weeks ago but is losing weight ).

With regards to changing frequency the answer is that you shouldn't need to change a cloth nappy more freqently than you would a disposable if you have the right system for you. I get 4 hours out of my Sandy's with DS but then they are completely sodden [bad mummy emoticon] - the fleece liners keep his bottom dry though so no need to change more often.

Essay Over (everyone wake up!)

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 19/11/2008 20:59

BBM - got this back from Ella's House people re print vs hemp nappies: "There's not a great deal of difference in absorbency but the hemp nappy
is more absorbent and does dry faster due to the pocket design."

ilovemydog · 19/11/2008 21:12

Here's what I did with DS when he was fully b/f. Got diaper bucket (with mesh). Put in bath tub. Got shower head and gave a short burst to diaper. Emptied into toilet.

Alternatively, my mom showed me how she used to 'sluice' the diapers. Hold in toilet, flush and shake (she lit insense, but she was a total hippy!)

lollipopmother · 19/11/2008 22:01

BBM - Silly question here, do babies wee about the same irrespective of their size? My DD wets her XS Sandy's pretty quickly hence the booster, when she goes up a size will she still wee about the same amount, hence making the nappy last longer?

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 19/11/2008 22:12

lollipop - that was the reason I stopped using the xs and went onto size s, as they lasted really only 1 wee, no booster now, only if I use at night.

ILMD - same thing my mum showed me

4andnotout · 20/11/2008 09:34

Morning all, the day has started badly here My washing machine has not only completely shredded one of my new breastpads but it has frozen withoutout pumping the water out and spinning so have a flooded kitchen and a washing machine full of water It hasn't been rinsing properly either so have just put all of the nappies in a bath of vinegar and water to strip them and then will have to take them to my mums to rinse and wash properly
On a positive note dd4 was weighed yesterday and she has put on a lb in 2 weeks so my milk is obviously good enough this time She is now 8lb 9oz and 4 weeks old. She still has another 2oz before she even matches dd3's birthweight though Right i must tackle some housework whilst dd4 is asleep as i dont want the washing machine man to think im a slattern

BigBadMouse · 20/11/2008 09:54

Lollipop - I have no idea! DS has days where he seems to wee a lot more than usual and it doesn;t seemto be linked to his feeding. I think what does change is when you get fewer dirty nappies then you can leave the nappy on for longer. When DS was tiny I was changing him so much because if his dirty nappies so absorbancy wasn't such an issue. Certainly when they get older you start to get super wees. DD2 started doing this at about 2.2 - suddenly one wee would flood an entire nappy but then I think that is more down to having better control and saving wees up for one long one .

ILMD - Things getting much better here! ROFL at your mum and her insence

4 not exactly good with 4DCs I'm sure. I dread anything happening to my washing machine. Poor thing is so overworked - feel like sending it off for a spa day or similar (although not sure what would be a relaxing treat for a washing machine) - Don't at me, I am very sleep deprived .

Got a big nappy presentation this afternoon but a bit concerned as DD2 has picked up a certain phrase from her daddy and now walks around saying it all the time. Yesterday, instead of counting me in to start singing bob the builder she said 'no, mummy, when I shout F**KS SAKE you start singing!'

AnnVan · 20/11/2008 09:59

BBM lol and at your DD. THough my sister knew an Australian couple who swore like troopers - they came into baby's room one morning to find him standing in his cot saying 'oh shi' oh shi' over and over. They were his first words!

4andnotout · 20/11/2008 10:02

My dd3 picks up very similar phrases too, she didn't want to go to playschool as they "are stinky bas**rds"

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 20/11/2008 10:17

BBM - on our way to 2nd b-day party whe ds was about 2, DP shouted W*ER to another road user (doesn't normally do that and we were on Motorway, so not much point..). rest of the journey was spent:
DS - shouting the word over and over
DP - mortified & trying not to laugh at same time
Sunflower - fuming at DP, trying not to laugh at DS, contemplating turning back to avoid embarassement in front of strangers... luckly DS had forgotten about it by the time we got there...

but then he learnt lots at nursery!! (we had the F-sake phase, which we hadn't realise was what he was saying for some time...)

ilovemydog · 20/11/2008 13:21

4not Wow! That's brilliant weight gain! We are still struggling with DS weight, although he is gaining steadily. And very long. More of a banana than a baby...

DD (2 yrs), when playing with her legos started shouting '*uck off...'

A friend of mine suggested word replacement, so *uck off becomes 'fork for you...'

So, when DD swore at her legos , I run and get her a fork and suggest that this is what she meant...

(Oh, and don't suggest this is Tourette's as I got majorly flamed in another thread and had to get it deleted!)

TheLadyEvenstar · 20/11/2008 13:31

Matnan hun, i just sent your nappy parcel and almost had heart attack lol posted the same size weight parcel last week it cost me £5 and today in diff p.o cost me £8 arghhh lol...

LavenderTea · 20/11/2008 13:41

Morning

ILMD and BBM Thanks for tips. DD is now on solids/purees 3 x a day and breast feeds only once or twice and bottles once or twice so her poos are starting to get much more together...and much less explosive and runny. Part of the reason I decided to try reusable nappies now really.

will try both the fleece and paper liners and for a day or two each and see what think.

So far in the nappy preferences the pop-in is winning over the totsbots and the green baby. Still haven't tried the sandys as still drying

TheLadyEvenstar · 20/11/2008 15:02

Lavender....I have loadsa nappies for sale lol

Also I prefer fleece liners I find the paper ones mark LO's skin and to be honest i don't think I would like to walk around with paper shoved down my knickers lol...

lollipopmother · 20/11/2008 16:35

4andnotout Arrgh, that's bloody awful about your washing machine, what a nightmare.

BBM How did the presentation go? Who were you doing it to?
