GENERAL CHAT THREAD FOR CLOTH NAPPY USERS - PART 3

1000 replies

(Incredibly childish) BBM sneakily makes part 3 thread and places Sandy's flag at the top for a second time.

(Flag is made from organic cotton and has been dry pailed and washed at 40C)

ilmd no way, ask for loads then sell some to fund extra pressies YHM btw. All ok here

MatNanPlus · 17/11/2008 22:13

ILMD very sensible request

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 17/11/2008 22:28

ILMD - you'd surely have a queue of buyers on MN alone!

BBM - is there any difference between the ellas house hemp and print nappies, or is it just the print? I got some pre-loved old style hemp, and I really like them for their slimness and think I'll probably get some in next size once dd is more mobile/walking, and seen some really pretty print ones...

mat nan plus no i am using it now just got to get a ocean print medium rikki now

BigBadMouse · 18/11/2008 09:43

Sunflower - nope they are different. I use the plain ones - have used them soley for DD2 since I discovered them. Mine are ancient but they work really well still. Definitely think the popper fit is the way to go though - esp on the size 2s.

From EH website:

Plain nappy....Hemp combined with cotton gives Ella's House nappies absorbency and softness without bulk. Now the soaker is separate from the nappy body so nappy dries quickly. Also soaker can be folded at the front for boys. Gentle elastication at the legs and back helps with fit and containment. Nappy is natural unbleached colour. Boosters are not included

Print nappy....This nappy is ideal for daytime use, and for showing off to friends! Made up of an outer cotton print, hemp/cotton blend fleece soaker and inside. A choice of Aplix or Poppers to fasten, and it also has gentle elastication at the legs and back for better containment and fit. Boosters are not included

Description of the print one isn't very clear IMO. The plain ones I have have no fleece inside - seems as though the print ones do have. I've not held a print one yet - I think she has changed the design since they came out anyway. Might be an idea to ask her what the difference is - if you find out please let me know (not that I need any more 26 is quite enough methinks)

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 18/11/2008 09:49

bbm just want to say thanks for reccomending Bimbles and Bumbles. So far I think they are great.
Was suprised as the Bimbles are so small (ds 14lb) I didnt think they would fit.

Not been brave enough to use this at night though, So have used the Bumble at night. Even though it prob is too big yet, and looks massive.

Also got a few tots bots, and thinking of trying bambinex teddies.
Really just looking for something for night time till he is big enough for Bumbles.

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 18/11/2008 10:08

Thanks BBM - I have e-mailed them - haven't had any leaks with them, but trust the sandy's & the pop-ins more for explosive poos, but I really like the slimness, so I would imagine very good for mobile/walking LOs... mine are pre-loved old style too, but still very good and soft (and so saved on the 10 washes it takes to get them to full absorbency!) 26? well, i do have more than enough too, OMG, started writing what I have, but better not as it really shows I have too many... and waiting for some new orders too.... anyway, if you ever think of selling them, happy to help! oh, this buisiness will be my ruin

lollipopmother · 18/11/2008 11:51

BBM That is a very kind offer, I would love to try one but only if you have a spare and don't mind it possibly coming back with stains as my DD seems to put neon orange stains on everything at the moment and I can't get them out with all this cloud, so i won't mind if you'd rather not. Is the EH Day nappy what they call EH Hemp?

BigBadMouse · 18/11/2008 13:58

Lollipop - yes, they used to be known as the Day Nappies but now referred to as just the hemp nappy. I don't mind sending you one to try - 'tis very old but functional. I highly recommend combining them with a microfibre dishcloth - makes all the difference with a hemp nappy. They are size 2 though so too big for you at the moment - didn't this one through fully did I? Quite happy to send you one though

Sunflower I moved over to them because of their thinness. DD2 is tiny for her age. Anything bulky was a big issue for us as she looked ridiculous in trousers that were two sizes too big just to accomodate the bulk. Best thing about them is she is now a super-weeing 2.6yo and one wee will puff out a disposable straight away whereas these stay nice and thin even when wet

ilovemydog · 18/11/2008 14:48

The microfiber dish cloths are fabulous!

Got them last week to use as a booster, but am using them as wipes... [smile) (and as cloths for the: dishes, dogs. floor, carpet, etc...)

Told my mom I wanted Sandy's colored for my birthday. After she stopped laughing, she thought it was very practical....

babyjjbaby · 18/11/2008 15:49

lollipop i hav eposted nappy back to u today sorry it has taken me so long

AnnVan · 18/11/2008 16:50

hi all!
right about the coloured sandy's - local agent confirmed with miranda of twinkleontheweb that they are due to come across the pond in January!
have ordered myself a couple of sandy's - one regular cotton, and one organic cotton to try out. DP is fully alongside with this!
mmm must send money to agent before i forget.

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 18/11/2008 17:02

that's made my day, ANNVAN! BBM that is what I like about re-usables too. dispos are down to dd's knee in the morning, but cloth are exactly where I left them!

rusmum · 18/11/2008 20:52

BBM liking feel of bamboo (bamboozles) but NOT tots fit, what alternative pref nippa. have just taken all velcro off of teddies!!

Are fluffles low rise too?????

BigBadMouse · 18/11/2008 21:22

rusmum - all the tots are low rise. bambeasies are good nippa fit bamboo monsters - wel worth a try.

The lollipop bamboo is really nice - similar to a bamboozle but a far better fit with a higher rise -aplix though. Bambinex (aplix too) are good too but best for a thin DC as they are rather trim in the bottom region
Another aplix option is the Little Lamb bamboo but I wouldn't recommend for day-to-day use as they are incredibly slow drying. I use mine for night tome occassionally - they are thick and soft (far nicer than bamboozles) but you're looking at maybe 3 days drying time

Motherease Bamboo is nicer IMO, short pile and very thick - have you tried? Quite a long drying time again though.

Happy shopping.

BigBadMouse · 18/11/2008 21:25

the pile is thick, not the nappy itself on the Motherease (BBM is also thick). Motherease seem to use bamboo for a thinner option - the absorbancy will be the same as the cotton alternative but the nappy is thinner.

ilovemydog · 18/11/2008 21:27

BBM repeat for the extremely slow

the pile is smaller
the absorbency is bigger
the nappy is smaller

Please choose

lollipopmother · 19/11/2008 08:37

The pile is thicker (I assume the strands are thicker therefore don't need to be as long?) making the nappy thinner but the absorbency is the same - is my interpretation of it.

BabyJ - Thanks, glad you liked the wrap even if you didn't get on with the nappy.

BBM - Thanks for the offer of the EHH, but if it's a size 2 it'll be totally massive, the S Sandy's are still too big for her so no point in trying a size 2 yet, but thank you for thinking of me.

I have a very busy day today, our first Water Babies lesson and then jabs, uhhhhg.

LavenderTea · 19/11/2008 09:07

Hello, May I come in??
I am new to reusable nappies and this board, just wondering if you ladies could offer me some advice?

My dd is just 6 months and 50th percentile for weight, just weaning and poos are thickening up now, so decided to try reusable nappies.

I have a few trial packs which I bought 3 years ago when pregnant with ds oh and 1 pop-in which I bought recently, but I never used them, and now for the life of me can't remember all the facts either.

so I have one of the following ;

1 pop-in
1 sandys
1 green baby with velcro and paw prints on
and 1 square thing which has a thicker central panel but no velcro or fasteners ( have no idea how to use this.
Oh and 1 totsbots my sister lent me.

3 wraps,a cotton botoms, a motherese and an imse vimsi night wrap, oh and 2 wool soakers.

The pop-in is pretty self explanaory as is the totbots. Think I can manage that, but with the motherease sandys and the green baby there are no extra panels to put inside. So first question

Do I need to put extra panels in side green baby and sandy's nappies?

And 2nd question

What on earth do I do with the square with thicker panel bit in middle? Is that to go in the sandy's??

And final q's

Which nappies and wraps do any of you recommend most?? Obviously am just at the trial stage at the moment, so any
recommendations to try will be welcomed.

That's it for now I think.

Crikey I waffled on a bit , didn't I??
Thanks

babyjjbaby · 19/11/2008 09:18

the sqaure sounds like a prefold u fold it and use it in the cotton bottoms wrap and secure with a nippa the sandys doesn't need anything in the middle just put it on and a wrap over it haven't got a clue about green baby have u got any fleeceliners to keep the wetness away from babys skin

BigBadMouse · 19/11/2008 09:37

ILMD - doubt very much you are very slow - far more likely I am making little sense atm

Bamboo Motherease...
Pile is shorter and more dense than a lot of other bamboo nappies. Absorbancy is same as motherease cotton equivalent but the nappy itself is less bulky so you get the same absorbancy for less bulk. Hope that makes more sense - dread to think what I had types before

LavenderTea · 19/11/2008 09:39

Thankyou babyjj Are the nippers like funny plastic y shaped things? I have some of those too. I'll give that a shot.

But No, no fleece liners with the green baby one. In fact no reusable liners at all. Only paper liners. Can I just use those. They seem very thin and so does the nappy. Can you recommend a brand of fleece liners or will any do??

oooh I just had another thought. Can I ask?

Do I need to change reusables more frequently or the same as disposables ? Just wondering if the wetness is more obvious and against skin? And do you use any barrier creams?? I don't currently during the day with disposables only at night.

Thanks again
LT

LavenderTea · 19/11/2008 09:47

BBM thankyou and hello Ooh are lo's are almost same age... It's gone sooo fast hasn't it... I'm broody for the next already...

The motherese is an airflow. It says Small on the size, but looks huge... Think I will give that a go with the sandy's next. Feels lovely. Very soft. I have a tumble drier and a washing line to dry washing radiators occasionally. Think I need to get a clothes rack/maiden though ??? (is that the correct word ??)

Babyjj you said nothing in the middle of a sandy's. Does that include no paper liner too??

I have just put her in the pop-in for now cos it was very simple to work out

LavenderTea · 19/11/2008 09:48

sorry "are" lo's was supposed to be our lo's

babyjjbaby · 19/11/2008 10:03

no u need a liner i would get some fleece ones off ebay tho as fleece ones keep the wet away from skin where as papaer doesn't u will be shocked at how wet a resuable is when u change but it is normal and u do soon get used to it also have u prewashed the nappys
