GENERAL CHAT THREAD FOR CLOTH NAPPY USERS - PART 3

1000 replies

BigBadMouseInHauntedHouse · 30/10/2008 19:29

(Incredibly childish) BBM sneakily makes part 3 thread and places Sandy's flag at the top for a second time.

(Flag is made from organic cotton and has been dry pailed and washed at 40C)

BBM will be best placed to tell you about absorbancy as she has all 3 versions I think. I only had xs cotton ones, so not good to compare.

AnnVan · 13/11/2008 09:48

Aaw are the coloured ones not available here then? WHen will they be? I have to admit I'm a sucker for gorgeous cloured nappies, even though I know no one will see it. DS poos are very explosive. God knows if I used dispos I'd have to wash him off every time he pood because it would be an 'up to the shoulders' moment every time. Thank goodness we only had to deal with that once as we moved him into cloth quite early.
I think I might pick up a couple to try out

Lollipop I had to lie to DP and say that the bumhugger hasn't been used yet, because he's really at the idea of using second hand nappies. (It hasn't arrived yet, just told him it was coming)'YOu're not putting anything second hand on his bum' was his comment

BigBadMouse · 13/11/2008 09:51

Arghhhhh stop talking about Sandy's

Ooh it's no good...

...with regard to fabric, I use all three for DS.

Absorbancy is QUOTED BY MOTHEREASE as THE SAME (12oz) for all fabrics - bit surprising really, I do feel as though I can leave a bamboo one on for longer than the ordinary cotton. Anyhoo for sure:

Bamboo is 6definitely6 thinner fitting but takes a longer time to dry (Sandy's do take a while to dry because they are so absorbant). Stays lovely and soft and I like the natural colour. Stands up to repeat washing very well indeed - far better than most bamboo nappies. It is a lovely thick short pile bamboo - none of your bamboozle threadbare stuff here. The drying time is the downside though.

Organic - seems to stay softer than the non-organic for longer (hard to say atm as mine aren't quite as old as my non-organic but I'm sure they are staying softer for longer - no idea why though ). Organic does seem to be more abosrbant than the ordinary too - ILMD told me about this. I like the colour as well

Non-Organic - absolutely fine but I think I'll be paying the little bit extra for the organic when we get to size 2. I prefer the unbleached look out of the two non-organic choices.

On the cloured Sandy's front - the coloured MEOS have been in the UK for a good while now (weird)

Thanks Sunflower for giving me an excuse to talk Sandy's

rusmum · 13/11/2008 09:53

BBM woneroos?? for night. still looking - ben offered some at £4 each.

BigBadMouse · 13/11/2008 09:58

rusmum - eeeekkk who uses Wonderoos for night??? I know someone on here does [brain dead emoticon] - I think it was AnnVan? They are really good for the day, very reliable as pockets go, fleece lined would mean good for nights but I have to say I haven't used one for night time (yet). Just whatever you do make sure you get the ones made by Hip Hip Baby and NOT WONDERWORKS (wonderworks ones were very leaky - most ones on the 2nd hand market are HHB)

rusmum · 13/11/2008 10:02

thanks - they not worth the hassle then??? HELP re night nappy??

using a booster sandy or booster teddy at mo. no leaks YET!!! but dd a side sleeper so not be long.

Rikki better for side sleeper than airflow?

So regular sandy supposedly as absorbant as bamboo??

Back to smelly sandy - just wash in bio??? that it??????

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 13/11/2008 10:04

BBM - you're very welcome!

I know, saw the MEOS on e-bay and other nappy sites some time ago and thought "wouldn't it be nice if they did Sandy's too" (and I know that'll be the time I won't be able to stop myself pressing that order now button...) keep on telling DP that cloth really is cheaper than disposable, but I think he's starting to doubt me when the house is being takn over by nappies and I keep on telling him I need to try this, that, and the other, and I'm ordering fleece to make my own...

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 13/11/2008 10:10

rusmum - I use woderoos for night and happy with them , only had damp bodysuit edge once, but I think it was more to do with the operator's closed-eyes nappy change... dry very quickly, at least the micro inserts, should receive some hemp ones today so than I'll tell you.

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 13/11/2008 11:23

(sad) just received my 3 2ndhand wonderoos - they're wonderworks ones, can't believe I spent money on them, the don't look great, maybe after a wash.... such a disappointment...

rusmum · 13/11/2008 11:36

sunflower how much you pay?

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 13/11/2008 11:50

£30 rec delivery, they've got hemp inserts at least...

lollipopmother · 13/11/2008 13:09

Oh Sunflower, what a shame. But you don't know they won't suit Maia, they may well be fine. You could always keep the inserts and sell the outers, lots of people seem to do that, hence why I keep finding Wonderoos for £4 and getting all excited! The fact is that getting the inserts costs a fortune so you don't make a saving.

Rusmum - I've used Wonderoos for nights, they're fine but if you're using on the smallest setting you can't get the bigger insert in, so you'll need to boost with something else.

AnnVan - Please could you email me - lorwiggins at yahoo dot co dot uk, ta.

BBM - I think I love Sandy's as much as you! There really is little need for any other daytime nappy, it's such a shame that they don't do a night-time Sandy.

BigBadMouse · 13/11/2008 13:23

Chin up sunflower they may be absolutely fine. At least you have the hemp inserts. Maybe you could return them if you're really not happy.

rusmum - here's what you need to do with your smelly sandy's Excuse the length - I have C&P'd it from something I wrote for someone else.

To make your nappies smell fresh again

Clean the filters and wipe out the rim and door seal of your washing machine.
Do a service wash if you think your washing machine could do with one ? this is usually a wash at 90C with the machine empty and a dose of non-bio powder but check your washing machine manual

Then...

Buy 500ml white MALT vinegar ? it?s really cheap
Put CLEAN nappies in nappy bucket
Pour all of vinegar over nappies and top up bucket (almost to top) with warm or cold water
Leave to soak overnight
Plonk nappies in wasing machine next morning and wash at 30 or 40C with a full dose of BIOLOGICAL powder. Don?t wash at any hotter than that as this is the temperature at which biological powder is most effective. The reason you use bio is because it is better at breaking down the molecules which are causing the smell. I just use a cheapo box of the stuff, you don?t need anything fancy IME.
You can also add some warm water with several - up to 10 - drops of lavender or tea tree to the softener compartment but this is optional and I should think not really that necessary if you have a scented powder.
Once the wash cycle is over rinse once or twice to get rid of any excess powder.

This has worked every time for me so far - it's not something you should have to do often. I tend to do this in two batches so I don?t run out of nappies in the meantime.

If you don?t want to faff about with vinegar then just try washing the clean nappies at a low temp with a full dose of biological powder then do the extra rinses. Sometimes that is really all you need to do ? depends how bad the problem is. The vinegar does have the added benefit of softening the nappies a bit too though.

Common causes of clean but smelly nappies are:

Build up of detergent in the nappies due to insufficient rinsing (esp of water-saving machines). You shouldn?t have to do extra rinses after each wash but the occassional extra rinse. If you see a lot of bubbles at the end of a rinse might be a good idea.
Using liquid detergent
Using liquitab detergent (esp in washer-driers!!)
Not maintaining your machine regularly
The nappies taking too long to dry
?and sometimes DCs go through phases of having extra strong wees!

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 13/11/2008 17:22

thanks, I've washed them, they're still greyish, and the inside is not lovely soft fleece... will try them tomorrow and see... oh well, anyway, I need a bigger box for the nappies! the one I have is not enough anymore, and Ui need to make space for those color sandy's... trip to ikea tomorrow, if not doing a nappy demonstration to a mum I met at post-nattal group

AnnVan · 13/11/2008 17:57

lollipop - i've e-mailed you!

MatNanPlus · 13/11/2008 19:51

I guess the coloured Sandy's don't need a wrap?

We need the nappies people like and use and those they didn't on profiles

have after repeated washing and tonnes of sunshine, resorted to a 6 hours napisan soak for the nappies that weren't washed properly 2 months ago and they are sparkling now.

Have also moved to a #2 wash of 1h45m instead of the #4 wash of 50m as they weren't getting clean, using 30mls of powder and 125mls of white vinegar and doing well.

ilovemydogandPresidentObama · 13/11/2008 20:09

Think Sandy's colors still need a wrap... Not that you'd want to as they are soooo cute...

Ugh - left DCs with DP for the day. He put DS (8 months) in:

Bum Genius V3 (on toddler settings)
stuffed with Bambino Mio
Lollipop Bamboo booster
Tots Bots Wrap - size 2

This is despite coming home at 9pm last night, doing a nappy wash and leaving them all out in wraps....

Oh well - at least he didn't resort to going out and buying disposables which happened to a friend of mine

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 13/11/2008 20:20

ILMD - how big was DS's bum then?!?! still, at least he tried... but that soudns such a comical scene... DP's already having problems enough with pre-fleece-lined sandy's! god knows what he'd do if I left him alone with DD and un-poppered pop-ins

babyjjbaby · 13/11/2008 20:25

haha lol can just imagine ur lo in that nappy

rusmum · 13/11/2008 20:47

it doesnt take much to confuse them.. lol

MatNanPlus · 13/11/2008 21:30

Sweet ILMD at least he was absorbant till next monday

MatNanPlus · 13/11/2008 21:32

There you see ILMD what is the point of pretty nappies if they still need a wrap, if you could get clear wraps then no issue but i would rather pretty wrap plain innards

AnnVan · 13/11/2008 21:47

MNP - I don't care that it's not visible under the wrap - I just love the pretty coloured nappies and I know they're under the wrap can't help myself - IWANT SOME COLOURED SANDY's

AnnVan · 14/11/2008 10:24

Sunflower - I missed the delivery of the bumhugger yesterday, I was round at MIL's for lunch. I'll have to arrange redelivery, hopefully for tomorrow. Must contact nappy agent about sandy's and an extra wrap or two.
