Chin up sunflower they may be absolutely fine. At least you have the hemp inserts. Maybe you could return them if you're really not happy.
rusmum - here's what you need to do with your smelly sandy's Excuse the length - I have C&P'd it from something I wrote for someone else.
To make your nappies smell fresh again
Clean the filters and wipe out the rim and door seal of your washing machine.
Do a service wash if you think your washing machine could do with one ? this is usually a wash at 90C with the machine empty and a dose of non-bio powder but check your washing machine manual
Then...
Buy 500ml white MALT vinegar ? it?s really cheap
Put CLEAN nappies in nappy bucket
Pour all of vinegar over nappies and top up bucket (almost to top) with warm or cold water
Leave to soak overnight
Plonk nappies in wasing machine next morning and wash at 30 or 40C with a full dose of BIOLOGICAL powder. Don?t wash at any hotter than that as this is the temperature at which biological powder is most effective. The reason you use bio is because it is better at breaking down the molecules which are causing the smell. I just use a cheapo box of the stuff, you don?t need anything fancy IME.
You can also add some warm water with several - up to 10 - drops of lavender or tea tree to the softener compartment but this is optional and I should think not really that necessary if you have a scented powder.
Once the wash cycle is over rinse once or twice to get rid of any excess powder.
This has worked every time for me so far - it's not something you should have to do often. I tend to do this in two batches so I don?t run out of nappies in the meantime.
If you don?t want to faff about with vinegar then just try washing the clean nappies at a low temp with a full dose of biological powder then do the extra rinses. Sometimes that is really all you need to do ? depends how bad the problem is. The vinegar does have the added benefit of softening the nappies a bit too though.
Common causes of clean but smelly nappies are:
Build up of detergent in the nappies due to insufficient rinsing (esp of water-saving machines). You shouldn?t have to do extra rinses after each wash but the occassional extra rinse. If you see a lot of bubbles at the end of a rinse might be a good idea.
Using liquid detergent
Using liquitab detergent (esp in washer-driers!!)
Not maintaining your machine regularly
The nappies taking too long to dry
?and sometimes DCs go through phases of having extra strong wees!
