Is anyone else working on an essay over the next couple of weeks?

In my second year, and planning on being organised this year with working towards essays etc (as in not completing it the night before!).

So, I've got an essay to be in on the 17th November, and started to work on it today.

Anyone else wanna join in this thread? Either for a moan, if your stressing about it, or just for a kick up the arse?

Hi guys, can I join you in the worrying and procrastination?

Am doing a BA (Hons) in Librarianship part time (in uni one day p/week 9-5), and have one full study day p/week when ds is in nursery. Have I spent that time productively this week? Erm....no. Went Xmas shopping to Leeds (for the B shop) with dh

I'm doing a 4 modules this year - 2 second year & 2 final year - with only 2 exams in the summer as the remainder are all coursework assessed. Have about 9 more assignments (ranging from 1500 word essays to full blown project-managed bollocks) left to do this year.

Should be studying today to get next acw completed, but it will have to wait until ds is in bed (dh is away for the weekend watching the rugby).

Oh yes, and am 28 weeks pg, so will have newborn to cope with around the time of most of my big deadlines

Please help to keep me on track and sane by giving me a huge kick up the butt to get my next acw (due Monday) finished tonight .

I promise that I will reciprocate with the ass-kicking as and when required, or hand out coffee and choccie biscuits when the going gets tough.

Welcome Wine,

I've almost finished mine, in the mood to complete it now (I suppose that helps!).

Going to have some wine later tonight!

dylesmum good luck on tuesday! we'll have another assignment done and finished.

FairLadyRantALot · 30/11/2008 14:04

good luck with the presentation dyls...

Hi wine, welcome here...
and well done on getting the assignment out of the way!

Well, my enhibition piece was handed in on Thursday...what a hoohaa...because it was kinda bulky and some biskuits did not survive, but it was still all fine.
On Friday was the exhibition, and well, they sort of sprung it on us that we had to present our exhibition pieces in front of our little groups....which was erm, scary....
we thought that people would just wander about and that we had to be there and just answer any questions they may had...so, it came as a surprise to every single person in the group....
it was quite emotional, because we all have put in certain things that had a deep impact on us, etc....
well, I have to write an Reflective essay about the process of producing that exhibition piece and then I have to produce a moving and handling leaflat....thought I had the idea for me, and now not sure if it will be o.k. to do...should be able to find out from tutor I hope...if I can do it, then it's basically going to be a leaflat aimed at a new mother after C-section and it is going to explain how to get out of bed, basically...i.e. without straining your tummy muscles...but must see if it would fulfil the brief., or not...sigh....
Had my Diagnostic Essay back and sadly it would only have been a C if it had been marked...so, not really what I aimed for...but well, have gotten over my disappointment and hoping to do better from now on.

winemakesmummyclever · 30/11/2008 15:08

Fairlady - wow, what an awful thing to spring on you guys. What are you studying? You seem to have a real mix of assignments. I'll be a guinea pig for your M&H leaflet - due to have cs early Feb. Don't forget to mention that it's probably not a good idea to put your Ted stockings back on yourself 1 day post-op .

Am trying to decide whether to ask for individual assignments rather than so much group work for the next term. I am hoping to keep physically attending uni until the start of Feb, but pgp is getting worse all the time, so group work may pose a problem. Don't want to seem like I'm shirking responsibilities though. Will think about it properly over Xmas hols.

Mama- good luck to you to for your presentation. I hate any kind of public speaking and avoid it whenever I can.

Good luck to anyone else who is burning the midnight oil to meet a deadline or has something due this week.

FairLadyRantALot · 30/11/2008 15:52

wine, I am a first year Occupational Therapy student. Our course is the first course done in the way it is right now....i.e. we are the first group to have to do a leaflat.
The Exhibition piece was about our occupational Journey, basically to make us more aware of how we develope throughout life with different occupations, and how they impact, etc...theory behind it is, that once we understand ourselfs as Occupational Beings we can understand others as such better....
I had an Emergency C-section with my youngest, who is 4 years old...but I can not recall having to wear TEDS...I remember having to have the Injections, but can't recall the TEDS...
The leaflat is meant to be about 1 moving/handling task and I thought that going from lieing flat to sitting to standing after a C-section would be a good idea....especially as I recall that in Hospital I had one of those hydraulic beds and would therefore get myself into sitting position via that, but as soon as I was home I realised that I had to change the way I get up....to avoid pain as much as I could, lol!

I can see why Groupwork might not be so great in the new year for you....how will that all work anyway once you have the Baby, will you take a year out?

winemakesmummyclever · 30/11/2008 20:06

Ooh, you obviously went to a posh hospital! I had a regular, rickety bed and Teds as they are probably cheaper than post-op heparin. Though sometimes it just comes down to which consultant you are under - evidence based practice ?? Remember trying to put them back on having had a lovely shower the day after ds was born - just abandoned it and waited for dh to come and do it for me.

Suppose the manoeuvre would be pretty similar to getting out of bed with pgp, so some women would do it more naturally than others. Did you have instructions in the toilet telling you how to poo after a cs? Made me smile lots when I saw it.

I'm not taking a year out - will just carry on. Figured that it is going to be difficult whatever age the lo is, so may as well get it out of the way. Am just not going to go in except for exams, tutor appointments etc. One woman did the whole year remotely last year due to health problems, so they are a pretty supportive department. Will just have to see how January goes, but def not going in at all in Feb (except to hand assignments in).

The bizarre thing is that the next group work is for a module that is predominantly online. Don't quite get that myself . Have already got one group project underway, so cannot get out of that one. Am basically working like a trojan to get as much out of the way before Feb, so I don't have to stress myself about uni work then.

ChristmasFairyRantALot · 30/11/2008 21:48

oh we were told about a mainly online module of groupwork...like you am still not really getting it...I am sure it will all fall into place ...think it is the interprofessional learning thatr will be lots online...

as for posh hossie...ys was born in Northern Ireland Londonderry, the Altnagelvin Hospital and my experience was pretty crap...totally understaffed, etc....
no poo-posters there....lol...

dylsmum1998 · 03/12/2008 11:02

morning all,
have done the presentation, think it went ok, i hate speaking to people like that, bizarre as i know nd like all th epeople in our group, even the 2 tutors who marked it i like and get on well with. so really no reason to feel nervous but all those faces looking at you is really offputting!!
at least i was expecting to do that don't now what i would do if they sprung something like that on me - poor you Fairlady!!

onto the next assignemnt now due Tuesday i have 1950 words out of 2500 so not doing too bad, just feeling bit rough today and need to phone my mother in law as my washer is broke- repai man just been he says it needs complete new inards- so he gonna try and get it wrote off for me as it would be easier to just replace it

winemakesmummyclever · 03/12/2008 13:02

Glad things went ok dylsmum. Presume your washer is insured and you can get a shiny new one if it gets written off. Will your MIL take your washing in the meantime - bad time of year for washer to break down eh? Good luck for the next assignment.

My next acw is 1500 words (so difficult to keep it within these measly limits) on e-government - yawn! It is for my (mainly) online module on Community Information. Asked about the groupwork and he said it was more of a collaboration with individual contributions to form a larger piece of work (how can that actually work with an online module??). The tutor said he will set me an individual piece if I feel I would prefer that. Know someone who did this module last year and they said that it was a nightmare waiting for others to actually produce their bit for submission. So still not too sure what to do. Don't want to effectively say to people "ooh, I don't trust you to submit your work & I'll end up doing it all / getting a bob mark", but by the same token, I don't need the stress of having to do my work and worry about someone else's contribution whilst settling down to life with a new baby. Difficult decision really. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Xmas Fairy /FairLady - sounds like the hospital had all the gear and no idea eh? Sometimes you just get unlucky and get the minority of staff who are miserable/inexperienced looking after you the whole time. It's not necessarily the whole team that are awful is it?

Ds was born in the hospital I worked at, so really cannot complain about it. Although they just assumed I was ok with looking after babies and left me to it really. Was so glad to get home though. Going to same hospital again. Really hope I get a single room again - I am so bad at sharing my personal space. I swear, that IV & catheter (having elective cs this time) will be out and I'll be off down the road if I have to go on the main ward. Nothing to do with the other mums or anything - it is just me that is a bit mad and I have to have a 10 metre exclusion zone around me .

Anyway, better go and type up Monday's notes, email the project development group I'm in and start my reading for this next acw. And that's before I even think about the pile of washing & ironing and other housework that seems to just be multiplying around me. How does everyone else manage to balance things?

brightwell · 03/12/2008 15:17

The end is nigh, only 140 words to go, I'm now within the 10% word count.

jofeb04 · 03/12/2008 16:29

I've almost finished mine. I am within 10% of the word count, so will be printing if off tonight to hand in tomorrow (a day early... but that is only because I am not in friday!).

Next..... need some revision tips. Two exams in January (for different courses as well!).

Congrats to you all. It's not easy trying to study and being a parent.

OP posts:
brightwell · 03/12/2008 16:34

Yes congratulations to everyone. I'm 80 words short, that's good enough for me. I'll have another look at it tomorrow, print it and then post it off.

jofeb04 · 03/12/2008 18:05

WEll done Brightwell.

Woohoo, this one is now printed, and sitting on my table for the morning!

OP posts:
winemakesmummyclever · 03/12/2008 18:32

Well done you guys. I think it's a great feeling when you see the finished product waiting for submission and have made peace with yourself that you are not going to tinker with it any more .

ChristmasFairySantAsSLut · 03/12/2008 20:59

winemaker...indeed it will never be all staff...and of course often staff is limited by Hospitalpolicies aswell....
I think I was quite lucky as in ys was my 3rd Baby and I kinda knew what I was doing and knew enoughb about breastfeeding and I also wasn't in to much pain so, was pretty mobile rather quickly....

As for my assingments....am having a meeting with tutor for more info about the leaflet and also had some feedback from another tutor about the reflective essay....so....now I just have to get both done in the next week, lol.....

dylsmum1998 · 07/12/2008 17:48

wine yes washer is ensured, i have the new one arriving tomorrow. My MIL has been great i take a sack of washing over start it, then go do school run and when i come back 2 days later its all washed dry and folded ready for me to bring back and iron.
so i'm not too much to catch up with when new one arrives.
i finished my assignment the other day, i got to 2786 words, the limit was 2500, i'm hoping noone counts them!! lol
have started on the next one, its not due til 15th jan but would like to get it out way before christmas, or as near as possible so i dont spend christmas thinking about it

good luck everyone still working on theirs

XmasLollipopViolet · 07/12/2008 19:21

I've handed in one, almost done the other and BOY do I need motivation. I've done 1476 words of 2000 and it's that last push but I've lost my magic. And it's due in on Tuesday. Oh and did I mention...

I HATE STUPID STUPID HARVARD REFERENCING!

dylsmum1998 · 07/12/2008 19:23

i follow your sentiments exactly xmaslollipopviolet- harvard referencing needs erasing from everyones memory- its sucks!!

ChristmasFairySantAsSLut · 07/12/2008 22:36

I hear you Lollipop.....me, too....blardy referencing....it's a nightmare....sigh....
really must invest in EndNote software, me thinks....

ChristmasFairySantAsSLut · 07/12/2008 22:37

ChristmasFairySantAsSLut · 08/12/2008 13:06

I just can't do it...just started writing and wow...warbled over 300 words so easily and it is all crap...because well....it's not what I need to put in....sob...I don't want to do this anymore....

XmasLollipopViolet · 08/12/2008 13:33

...sob....I've only got 400 or so words to do for tomorrow, and the references and I seriously can't be bothered...!
