I always have a look to see what reading book theyre on/ what the standard of their work is compared to my dcs.

am i sneaky / sad or is this just normal human curiosity?

There again though is another variant of what might be in the bag. When I joined the thread I was speaking from my own experience of what I perceive a book bag to be.

Yes, I can see why people would be upset but I certainly wouldn't go rummaging around and I wouldn't read a diary or home book.

I am talking about a wee peek at a reading book cover through the top of the bag.

Thomcat · 20/10/2008 22:28

LOL 2shoes, we also have a toilet diary thing going on.

Monkeyblue · 20/10/2008 22:30

But "mehgalegs"zou have to unzip the bag to do that
Unless its see through

You are nosey enough to look in a child's book bag, could you honestly resist the temptation to read a diary?

mehgalegs · 20/10/2008 22:31

Not zips, just a flap over the top on ours. They are crap, hang open if you put too much in them and everyone can see your reading book

mehgalegs · 20/10/2008 22:32

Yes, DS1 has written a diary for a few months now. It sits by his bed. I have never read it although he has shown me some stuff.

I am quite offended by that comment actually edam. My motives for looking at reading books are not pure nosiness as I have explained further down the thread.

nooka · 20/10/2008 22:34

ds has fairly regularly come home with a slip about his behaviour problems. I would be highly embarrassed if someone else was nosing around those. If I have friends around and have stuck stuff on my fridge I would not be bothered if they read them. I don't keep private things on display. If they went through my drawers I would be very angry though.

Monkeyblue · 20/10/2008 22:34

Right I am off to buy a padlock

mehgalegs · 20/10/2008 22:37

I posted on this thread having read the OP and not really studied the title. I am admitting to looking at reading books but not prying about in the bag as the title suggests.

nooka · 20/10/2008 22:41

My ds is dyslexic. It doesn't make me want to look at what his friends are reading. I know he is behind when I listen to him struggle. One of his friends is also dyslexic, but I really don't think it would make me feel better (or worse) to know what book he has in his bag. Indeed I have no idea what might be in his bag. But then on reflection I'm not sure any children have come around to my house with their school bags, as most have siblings, so the parents take their stuff when they hand them over.

2shoesdrippingwithblood · 20/10/2008 22:46

jumps into defend megah who is a lady and would not snoop in a rucksack.

jasper · 20/10/2008 22:47

Never.

I hope you are all joking

jellybeans · 20/10/2008 22:48

Wouldn't dream of it. Freaky and weird.

mehgalegs · 20/10/2008 22:48

Thanks 2shoes. Do you know this is my first MN ruck (well slight barney in which I wore a colander and got a bit sweary and cross) and I am exhausted.

I must go and prod my DH (asleep on sofa - love him) and go to bed.

I will not look in any more bags (it only depresses me any way)

princesspeahead · 20/10/2008 22:49

god people really do this?
christ I find poughing through the contents of my own kids' bookbags dull enough, you couldn't pay me to look in anyone else's.

Couldn't give a damn what reading book anyone else has - why should I??

mehgalegs · 20/10/2008 22:50

yeah, yeah, yeah you are preaching to the converted luv.

scaryfucker · 20/10/2008 22:50

mehga, you sound lovely

I would let you peek at my stuff any time

mehgalegs · 20/10/2008 22:51

thanks scarey

Monkeyblue · 20/10/2008 22:51

Mehgalegs the colander suits you

NOW you do promise NEVER to do it again

2shoesdrippingwithblood · 20/10/2008 22:53

megha just get on the local meet up thread.

scaryfucker · 20/10/2008 22:54

don't make any promises you can't keep

seeker · 21/10/2008 06:23

Turning this on its head, why do people MIND so much? OK, as I said, the pryers are nosy ans insecure - but what harm does it do?

meandmyjoe · 21/10/2008 07:41

NEVER!!! They're not your kids so why would you care how clever they are? I'd be far too busy checking up on my iwn kid not other people's!

meandmyjoe · 21/10/2008 07:43

Think about it this way Seeker, would you like it if someothe rparent was snooping through YOUR child's bag?? I just think it's private and is a bit like another person who you don't know going through you bedroom. Fine if they're your kids but not other people's imo.

AbbeyA · 21/10/2008 08:06

It wouldn't bother me but I still don't see the point. You will find that the other DC is better, worse or about the same as your DC-so what?! If you talk to the DC whose bag you snooped in you would probably have some indication of his level anyway.
It seems as if in the one upmanship stakes people should be making sure that their DC carries a book at least 2 yrs above their expected reading level!
