I always have a look to see what reading book theyre on/ what the standard of their work is compared to my dcs.

am i sneaky / sad or is this just normal human curiosity?

stands - wish I could type tonight.

edam · 20/10/2008 22:02

It is clearly not 'only human nature' otherwise you'd have a cheery thread full of people going 'oh yes, I always do that'.

Yuck.

PsychoAxeMurdererMum · 20/10/2008 22:03

you know what would make me laugh (altho I admit I did not.......I actually had to stop myself being sick!)....

DS1 shoved his banana in his bag end of last term........and I never check his bag much now as he is 8 and I am trying to trust that he gives me all letters etc, and his homework comes home in a special folder anyway that he has to carry.

anyhooooooooooooo

DS1 claimed he had 'lost' his reading book one day, so I had to delve into his bag.....certain it would be buried under much scrap paper (ie, his 'works of art').

In went my hand........

out comes a very very very black squished banana beginning to grow new life forms

reading this thread kind of makes me wish that it had happened to one of the mums checking up on reading levels.

((I did find the book BTW. He had been reading it in te car on the way home!))

I just help at the school with changing the books twince a week. This way I know exactly what everyone is reading and their level without having to peek!!! I would not have the guts to peek but I love to know that ds1 is well within his group in his class. It is nice to also see just what do the others do for their homework!!! You could get really competitive here!!!!!! A bit of volunteer help has never hurt anyone!!

2shoesdrippingwithblood · 20/10/2008 22:05

ds is 16 and I have never gone through any of his mates bags. what an odd thing to do.

LynetteScavo · 20/10/2008 22:06

So those of you who don't look; do you avert your eyes from kitchen notice boards?

Heated · 20/10/2008 22:06

I'm guessing that a mum, who'll be doing me a favour and taking dc to school tomorrow, will look in both dc's bookbag and lunchbox! I may be doing her a disservice, but she's anxious about doing the right thing, how her dc compares with mine, and it would only be human nature to look. No big deal if she does. Have resisted the urge to make dc wild smoked salmon sandwiches & a quinoa blueberry muffin for lunch .

PsychoAxeMurdererMum · 20/10/2008 22:08

lynette.....I do look at the things on the fridge.

normally while we are in the kitchen making coffee etc.

mind you, stuff on the fridge is normally pics of the children or pics by the children.

Thomcat · 20/10/2008 22:09

Not read thread but in response to OP, LOL, errr that would be NO, it would never, ever occur to me. Not interested in anyone else other than my own kids tbh!

It one thing turning round and glancing to actually going into a bag delibrately looking

angrypixie · 20/10/2008 22:10

Yes I look at the fridge, but no I would never go through a bookbag or your handbag or open medicine cabinets.

mehgalegs · 20/10/2008 22:12

When I worked in London a colleague had the staff Christmas do at her house. She was older than us (late 40s we were all 25 - 30).

She was a very attractive and glamourous divorcee and obviously rather proud of her latest love affair as she left a letter from said lover, unfolded, out of the envelope on the little table next to the loo.

I think everyone at that party read the letter. And I think they were meant too.

Anyhoo, as you were.

bellavita · 20/10/2008 22:12

Of course Lynette

I like looking at my SILs reading material in the downstairs toilet, does that count?

Tortington · 20/10/2008 22:14

no, no i never did. it never occured to me that someone would

OMG - i think its a bit rubbish actually

scaryfucker · 20/10/2008 22:17

I pin bills up on my notice board.

And credit card notices whilst I am putting off planning paying them.

Also my copy of my annual subscription to LoveHoney.co.uk

My life is an open book !

mehgalegs · 20/10/2008 22:18

Another factor though is what age kids are we talking about here? See, I am still stuck in primary/ preschool land so I am picturing the typical primary school book bag folder thing. Not much in it apart from a reading book and a tractor (if you are DS3).

I wouldn't go rummaging through a breat big back pack, or a teenagers bag. (Oh that's alright then I hear you cry )

I can see why some (ok the majority) might see it as crap but as I said before, we insecure nosey types need an outlet (sorry seeker to nick your phrase again)

Thomcat · 20/10/2008 22:20

My DD has SN's and we have a daily report written by her teacher - 'this is what she did in science, this is what she did in RE, this is what her general behaviour was like' etc. I'd consider it a gross intrusion of our personal information. You wouldn't know it ws in there, but you'd find it if you poked your nose in the bag. Having had a moment to think about it I can safely say I'd go spare if I walked into a room and found another mum going through DD1's school bag.

AbbeyA · 20/10/2008 22:21

I don't see the point. What use it to know what another DC is doing? It is like going through someone's handbag!

2shoesdrippingwithblood · 20/10/2008 22:22

looking at something that is on a notice board in full view is different imo. in dd's class all the tagets were once put on the wall(small sn class) and I read them all as I ma sure all the other 4 parents did.
but to go through a bag!! that is wrong.
I would ask the child if I need to know that badly.

2shoesdrippingwithblood · 20/10/2008 22:24

Thomcat you and me bith, dd's even says if she has had a wee or a BO.

Flum · 20/10/2008 22:25

This is hilarious everyone shoudl definately plant HIGH level books or the FT in their kids bags.

At my dds school they have an 'Achievment board' with a photo of all the kids andyou are sposed to stick post-it notes upwith stuff your kid can do. So people put stuff like Gabriella can count to 20 in French (reception class this btw) so a few of us are plotting to really take the piss.

eg DD successfully explained the theory of Quantum Physics to GRanny on Sunday. blah blah/..
