College, Uni, OU or anything else. How's it going? The good the bad and the obscure.

No, have changed group for this project, and next year get to pick my own crew I am being a presenter at our film screenings though, so that'll be good.

JDBfangirl · 17/11/2008 23:17

LV

The fact that attitude is highlighted as a strength and an issue is a bit strange and shows the difference in perception within your class. In fact there are quite a few that appear in both columns which I find a tad strange. Do you have quite a big class with lots of little cliques per chance?

When I did my media degree there was a certain amount of tension between certain factions. I was always the quiet one who just got on with it. I used to get quite frustrated with some of the group work when others egos came into it and once I was able to pick my groups etc, I felt much better about the work I was producing. Don't dwell on it too much, you'll find a decent group of people to work with who you're able to bounce ideas of to greater effect.

Huhu,
how is it going for you all?

Well, had a phonecall from teh Placement coordinator and they had to change my Placement....but, it is actually quite a good placement that it was changed, too...just slightly further away.....so...am happy anyway....! I'm gonna do a mental Health Placement now...

LV, sorry to hear that I wouldn't be so worried over what your peers think. Just maybe discuss with your lecturer what parts they think you may need to work on perhaps.

FairLady, ooo that's good that it's a good placement I remember studying Mental Health a bit for a job I was doing, and found it fascinating.

I'm at that point you described JDB. I'm quite quiet, well seem that way to the whole class, but there are two I get on well with. But today I was just highly POed with the others. We had a practical day so I organised for my mum to come in the afternoon for an hour to have her photos taken as we're doing portraits. Well I was the only one who organised for someone to come. Spent the rest of the day doing tutorials and practise shots, but most of the group left at 11 and were at the pub til 2! Takes the piss! Really made me mad. Then a couple of the students turned up half way through the day without a care. I feel like I'm the only one who really cares about getting the work done. Oh well, least I won't be leaving it til last minute. I've spent the last couple of weeks coming in in my spare time to use the studios and doing so again next week coming in on my two days off. Grr.

Well anyway that's my rant out the way! Lol.

FairLadyRantALot · 22/11/2008 11:05

We had an interesting discussion with some lecturers about the attitude of some in the group....and believe me, lecturers do notice it all, too....and they know exactly who is actually putting the work in and who isn't, etc...and they do talk to teh people who are absent a lot and who are always late, etc....

Notalone · 22/11/2008 11:46

Hello people. It must be problem with group work week because I am also having huge problems too. We have a group assigment coming up where we have to design and make a model for a service user, justify why we have made what we have in a presentation and then write an essay on it. The lecturer spoke to us last week and made it very clear the presentation can only be 10 minutes and has to concentrate on the model itself with the theory behnd it being in the essays. The presentation is half of the mark and we all get the same mark for it We all had our pieces to write in pairs and came together yesterday to put it all together but we realised that three people out of ten had written purely about theory and it lasted 6 minutes which would get us 0 marks altogether. These three people are the eldest and always think they are right when in actual fact most times they are not. Myself and two of the other quieter ones decided we should say something as it would affect our mark so we diplomatically said that what had been written was fab but did not concentrate on the model so might be better off in their essays. One of these women literally exploded saying she might as well scrap what she had done then and stormed off. The other one said the group had only fallen apart because she had been absent for the 2 previous meetings and we seem to be now split into 2 camps - the bossy 4 and the other 6 including myself. One of the bossy 4 is so difficult because she is so passive aggressive and never comes directly out with anything yet is always trying to take over. So has been a nightmare all round really.

Lollipop - that must feel horrible for you. I have also noticed that a few of the comments are in both the positive and negative sections. Maybe some people don't feel they know you and have just selected any quality for you without really considering the consequences for you? Hope you are feeling a bit better about it now anyway.

Fairlady - glad the placement change is still good for you and it sounds really interesting. Is it forensic? Still don't know where I am going yet but just hope its not orthotics or something simialr where anatomy is a big part of it cos I really struggle with that.

Tammy - how are you? Sorry to hear about your group problems too. Its so frustrating when people don't bother to put the effort in. Makes you wonder why there are there at all.

Hi JDB - how is your placement going? Are you still enjoying it?

FairLadyRantALot · 22/11/2008 12:01

Notalone, what a nightmare with your group....so far we haven't had groupwork to do that would be marked...phew....
I know groupwork is important and all that...but when it is marked....well, you can only ever be as strong as your weakest link...which seems unfair, when some people clearly don't even make an effort....
It's not forensics, as far as I know...not that I know much about my Placement anyhow, lol...it's outpatients and adults, as far as I know....will find out more this week though, as the educators are coming to see us. My one won't come, sadly, but there is another student going to the same department and that educator will also talk to me! Don't even know if it s a full or part time placement now, lol...

FairLadyRantALot · 22/11/2008 12:02

Oh forgot...just bought the Ross and Wilson Anatomy and Physiologie in health and illness book...which is very well written and easy to understand...

tammybear · 22/11/2008 21:15

FairLady, I think our tutor notices. He makes comments to them in the group, but doesn't full out say stuff in front of everyone. Dunno if he says anything behind the scenes.

Like we have to bring in our work on Tuesday of what we've done so far. I'm at Uni at the moment (yes it is 9:10pm on a Sat night and I'm here lmao) and have spent the last four hours doing work to prepare for it. But I don't want to show my work to the rest of the group because I don't want them to look through what I've done and then start copying! Sounds a tad selfish but I wouldn't mind so much if they actually did work.

And another rant while I'm at it, our tutor said we need to pick at least 8 different people to photograph. So far I've had 3 people in, have two more next week, and two more following week. But everyone else is using each other which we're not suppose to do. Going to speak to my tutor and say I'm not happy about it because I don't see why I should go out of my comfort zone to photograph people whilst they just photograph each other and get marked at the same standard as me. Yes I am a bit angry by it all lol.

Oh Notalone that's not good. Really isn't a good week for us all is it? Lol. We have that problem coming up. We have to do a presentation and the two people I am with messed up our trial presentation, so I'm really worried about our proper one now cause even if I do well, I'll get crap marks if they mess up again. Urgh!

But anyway hope all of you are okay. I'm off home, been here far too long now! Lol. Gotta go pick up DP from train station and go have some dinner!!

xxx

FairLadyRantALot · 23/11/2008 17:14

tammy, if the criteria for the photographs says that you should not use your fellow students, than those doing it will fail the assignment....so, you just do it correctly and I am sure it will pay off!
Oh, and the tutpors we spoken too said, that sadly they are not allowed to humiliate any students in the big groups...which, is a shame, but I can see why they wouldn't be allowed. But, if the Tutors notice than they will talk to them in private.

JDBfangirl · 23/11/2008 21:23

I know our tutors notice all manner of stuff so I'm sure they will realise you're all putting the effort in.

Placement is going well. Got some of my competencies signed of yesterday. I'm stating to find my feet and feeling a little more confident. Have 7 days in a row starting on Thursday .

I prefer being on placement to being at college actually!

OP posts:
FairLadyRantALot · 23/11/2008 22:07

JDB...7 shifts in a row...that will be tiring...are you going to be on Placement over X-mas?

Done some more on my Project and have to get it finished tomorrow....no matter how long it will take me, lol...it has to be finished....!

tammybear · 23/11/2008 23:46

Good to hear that from both of you. I will probably speak to my tutor just to put my mind at rest anyway, and I'll just carry on as I am. Going into tomorrow and got two people to shoot so I'm hoping they'll come out well

FairLady, good luck, hope you get it finished!

JDB, glad to hear you're enjoying your placement! Good luck with the 7 days in a row and hope you don't get too tired.

FairLadyRantALot · 24/11/2008 08:46

lol tammy no hoping about it...I will have to finish it today even if I work on it till midnight, lol....because I know that the next days will all be busy!

JDBfangirl · 24/11/2008 17:29

So Fairlady... is it finished yet

7 days in a row is probably going zombiefy me however it must be done and it means I have six days afterwards to get my next essay started.

OP posts:
FairLadyRantALot · 24/11/2008 23:57

well....it is nearly midnight....and well, apart from the Biskuit on the roof it is done....well, and that A4 piece of paper that explains what it all means, etc....but dh is going to do that roof tomorrow and I shall write that page tomorrow....that part will be the quickest of it all...lol!

Well, them days off are a good thing! What was the Essay again...it's a different one, isn't it?

Oh, am going to try to take a picture of thAT MONSTRUM OF A Gingerbreadhouse....not sure how much you will be able to see...but will try!

FairLadyRantALot · 25/11/2008 00:02

put a pic up in my profile....

FairLadyRantALot · 25/11/2008 17:59

well....feeling a bit disappointed today....had my Diagnostic Essay back and, if it would have been marked and counted it would have been a C...which wasn't what I was working towards
Also, finally had a good idea for the leaflat...but after a 2. Brief it looks like that I can't do that....argh......
So, not a happy Bunny...also, just remeasured my Exhibition piece and in height it has now gone slightly over the measurements we are allowed (bloody Biskuits on the roof added more height than I thought....) it's only by a few milimeters...but it may still mean that I won't get away with it and that can mean that I will be marked down....tbh...I am feeling like crying...because there isn't much, or anything , I can do about it now....bohoo and wail...

Sorry for ranting...hope everyone else had a better day than me!

LollipopViolet · 25/11/2008 20:28

Am great. Am shooting tomorrow, had a green light meeting yesterday, which involved me being told I had to completely redo my paperwork for my bit of our sequence, but hey ho, I've done it And got my shiny Media Production hoodie :D

FairLadyRantALot · 25/11/2008 22:20

oh, a shiny hoody, eh!
But, must have been annoying about the paperwork!

LollipopViolet · 26/11/2008 16:43

A bird poo'd on my hoody during my shoot (pics of the un bird messed hoody are on my profile). Shooting was OK, big learning curve cos my mate's sound went wrong and on my shoot, it was my first time directing. I'm better at taking orders than giving them!

Notalone · 26/11/2008 19:15

A c is fab for your first essay Fairlady but I can understand why you may be a bit disheartened if you were aiming for higher. Have you asked around to see what everyone else has got - you may find you have done the best? We have been told to expect around 40-50% on our first essays and people often end up being really upset as they are used to getting 80-90% at college. I finished my People in their Environments Assignment today - just gotta hand it in now. The presentation is tomorrow - eeek!!!

Tammy - how is your group work going now? Have you done your presentation? The woman who stormed off emailed everyone yesterday to say she has an "unexpected medical appointment"and can't come to the presentation after all. We were meeting today to finish it off so I emailed her back to ask if she was coming in today and she said she wanted to finish her essay so no she wouldn't and that her appointment if for her jabs. Well the jabs can be rescheduled easily as the uni has its own medical centre - I have rescheduled mine a couple of times, and we ALL had essay to do too. Aaarrgghhh! Another girl did the same as well saying she needed to do her essay rather than sort the group project out. Can't beleive how selfish some people can be.

Birdpoo on your new hoodie Lollipop - how annoying!

Notalone · 26/11/2008 19:16

PS - the model looks fab Fairlady - am very impressed at your arty crafty skills!

Notalone · 26/11/2008 20:07

Forgot to mention by the way that I found out about my placement. I am going to be sent to a forensic placement about a mile from my house. The location is fab and it will be really interesting but I was kind of hoping to get Forensic when I was a bit more experienced. It is a medium secure unit so won't house any violent criminals will it?

tammybear · 26/11/2008 21:52

FairLady, well done for doing the essay. Sorry to hear you didn't get what you were hoping for though I got my project back and got predicted a C too, so I know how you feel. I was hoping I had done better. And I think the house is looking great! If it's only a few millimeters, I'm sure it'll be fine. Got my fingers crossed for you! And hugs

LV, oops about your hoodie. Especially when it's new! Love that pic of you and the dolphin btw! So cool. And ooooer at being director. I wouldn't have known what to do! Lol.

Notalone, it's going okay. Presentation is in two weeks. I've been doing my Powerpoint this evening, but my brain's not working properly so I've had to stop as I can't think what I'm putting into it. But I've got a study day tomorrow so shall pick up where I left off! But sorry to hear you're having problems with your group. I'm a bit worried about mine cause I gave the idea of what I had planned and said we should get together on one of our study days. They didn't seem overly keen on the idea. And good lukc with your presentation! And pleased to hear about your placement! I'm sure you'll do fab Can't answer your question though, sorry!

Hope everyone's okay though! xx
