Hiya sorry to gate crash this thread but I just wanted some quick advice and this seems like it might be the place?

I am a nanny for a 6 month old who wears "real" nappies. My little mindee also doesn't use wet wipes etc; so I am wondering what do you use when you are out and about?

Water in special bowl and cotton wool is used at home - is it feasible to do this on the go with using some sort of tupperware and lid?

ChairmumMiaow · 04/09/2008 19:17

AnnVan - I remember that feeling even though I never even went overdue. So frustrating!

Good luck though!

AnnVan · 04/09/2008 19:46

thanks miaow Eyelash I'm no expert as my LO has yet to arrive, but there are ladies who use washable wipes. I'ms sure one of them will be along soon with a good answer. They do discuss them fairly often. Keep an eye on this thread I'm sure you'll have an answer soon!

Hi all,

Ann thinking of you! I was overdue - not by a lot (well, actually, contractions started the day after due date, but baby wasn't born until EDD+4, edging towards 5... ). Hopefully it will be speedy when it happens. And 'comfortable'

Eyelash hi there, good gatecrash I think! I use real nappies, and today used them out and about. (However, I'm going away for the weekend and it's nature disposables then; and buckets of guilt, this-costs-money-on-top-of-everything stuff!) I take a couple of spares (mine are pop-ins - hi Miaow! - and they fold up tiny into little funny lozenges!), some paper liners, and a spare bag - I have a washbag thing I got free with a magazine! That takes the dirty/wet ones. It's plasticky (waterproof) inside.
With wipes, I use washable ones at home, but surely cotton wool isn't much of a problem? I'd take a tube or a handful of those cotton wool pads for removing make up (cause they're small, but a roll is cheaper!), and water is freely available everywhere! Most baby changing units have a sink, right? Run the cotton wool under the tap? You could do tupperware...but is it necessary?

navyeyelasH · 04/09/2008 23:20

I'm just worried it might be a bit cold on babies bum - but then I am a softie! Also not all parks have toilets here. I think I might just do a small tub of water if we go somewhere with no loos; then cold water where public loos are available! Thanks all for the help.

Essie3 · 04/09/2008 23:39

Hahaha, eyelash, good nanny, bad mummy here! I often use cold water on DS' bum to get him used to it!!
How about a flask? When DS was 1 week old our boiler died (on a weekend, naturally) and we had no hot water, but heated some in the kettle and used our thermos for the first and only time!

MatNanPlus · 04/09/2008 23:59

EyeLAsh i pop some wet cotton wool or a face cloth into a resealable food bag, great to then to pop used nappy in.

We recently went away and only used 1 dispie in 5 days including 4 flights i love cotton, we have prefolds (B.Mio)

needaholiday · 05/09/2008 01:06

I use cold water too, when we go out I take dry wipes and a small bottle with water in and soak the wipes as needed.

Any babies here yet ladies??? C'mon, stop hanging on

AnnVan · 05/09/2008 01:36

needaholiday - i you have any words of wisdom that will get this thing moving, then speak them now. I had cramps all last night and early hours this morning. Rest of the day - bugger all. Now- killer heartburn adn I'm nearly out of Gaviscon. Have had enough. Get out -out outout...

ChairmumMiaow · 05/09/2008 07:51

We use washable wipes. I wet them and squeeze them out (mostly) and put them in a plastic pot for the nappy bag. We've used cold water on DS during the summer and he doesn't seem to mind now its getting a bit colder.

I'm very proud of myself too because I bought an asda value towell and chopped it up and hemmed the bits to use as wipes

I have a wet bag for my dirty nappies, and the wipes just go in that.

AnnVan - thinking contractions for you

MrsJamin · 05/09/2008 09:42

I take my lovely washable wipes (from weenotions!) out dry (two different colours, one for bums and one for faces/hands as we're BLW), then I've got a little spray bottle from boots that has water + baby bath in. Most of the time when you change your baby out, there's access to a tap so I generally just run the wipe under the tap and use that (instead of the spray) as it's a lot wetter. I love not using "baby wipes" - it saves SO much money.

ChairmumMiaow · 05/09/2008 10:24

MrsJamin - we have cheap flannels for faces, which are also kept wet in a pot.

I also keep a bottle of spray which came from our nappy lady for when I run out of wet wipes (carry dry ones too normally)

I need the vibes, but I'll only take a few as I think Sunflower and AnnVan need them more as they're more overdue than me, poor gits!

I am going to get a squeezy bottle for my changing bag but I haven't seen any at all - where have people been getting theirs?

MatNanPlus · 05/09/2008 11:49

The mini bottle that are 100ml for in cabin toiletries are good Lollipop

I might have some KOMH.

Have admitted defeat with DD and am going to sell all the pink and girly coloured nappies but hang on to the unisex colours for DC3. I'll still have enough nappies in her size that we can probably get back to cloth if we ever get on top of the bum situation.

I'm going to sort them out later so I can tell you what I have then, but it's mainly fuzzibunz pockets, with a few ither pockets thrown in.

LackaDAISYcal · 05/09/2008 12:28

and c'mon babies........those nappies are all lovely and fluffed up and waiting for your delicious little bottoms

AnnVan, keep reminding yourself that these tightenings, twinges and cramps are all getting things going in the right direction, and I've surmised from lots of labour threads on here, that lots of pre-labour usually makes for a quicker and easier main event.

DDs bum saga to keep you all updated (and take my whinging about it off this thread )

I will keep posting don't worry...after all it's only nine weeks till the arrival of my next fluffy bum ...or less if he doesn't get himself in the head down position soon!

AnnVan · 05/09/2008 13:54

Well, I was happy about the twinges etc until my mw appointment this morning, when it turns out zero progress whatsoever. So the sweep she did probably won't work. I think this bugger is holding on to be induced. and frankly now I just don't care.
Induction is booked for Saturday 13th. And I'll have to go for monitoring on next friday as well.

Well I can only hope I go into labour before induction. I am booked for another sweep next thursday, so I guess I'll no if stupid uncooperative cervix has made any progress before the induction date. Bugger though, this means baby is going to be born right in the middle of all the other birthdays in DP's family - his nana's 65th is on 13th, so I have a feeling we won't be going to that! Also his half sister will be three on 17th and his Aunt's (wanker) partner has his birthday on 16th. There's a couple of others as well I think.
