Baby on the way, partners kids overnights

My partner and I are expecting a baby. We live in my small two-bed terraced house.

My partner's two kids (12 and 8, boy and girl) stay with us every other weekend, Friday to Monday, in the second bedroom, which they share, which is already an issue due to their ages and lack of space - it is also used as my home office the rest of the time.

We’ve been trying to move for 2 years but ongoing divorce complications have stopped this - we’ve been together over 3 years and the divorce is still ongoing with no end date in site.

Until the financials are settled we can not afford to move.

The second bedroom at some point will become the babies room. I’m aware people will have opinions on this, but there is physically no other option when it comes to the storage and things we will need for the baby, that room will have to be used for them.

The living room is not big enough for any sort of blow up or temp beds, and the dining room is open plan with the kitchen - which we intend to utilise as my new office and play space for baby. Further to this, with it being open plan it is near impossible to heat in winter.

The second bedroom is not big enough to have a double bed in, so we can’t even swap with ours as an option.

No other family are nearby, both sets of parents are over an hour drive away and paying for separate accommodation for three nights a fortnight isn't affordable either - we’re both self employed.

Our plan:

  • Overnights continue for now with the kids in their usual room prior to the birth but with changes to the room setup while we prepare and get what baby needs.
  • After the birth, we step down to Friday and Saturday nights, home on Sunday evening so they're rested for school and a small step towards the next adjustment.
  • Overnights to pause once baby is 5 months old and we start moving them into the second room, they will resume as soon as we move (hopefully not long after this)
  • Until then: Our Saturday and Sunday days, 9am to 7pm, plus continuing the other in-week contact my partner already has with them.

Their mum thinks we should find a way to keep all three nights, with airbeds or paid accommodation. We feel this is not realistic with a newborn and the space available.

And without giving too much context - most of the ongoing divorce complications are because their mum is fighting to keep the former family home (that she can only just afford at a big stretch) for the wellbeing and ongoing routine of her children as priority. A year before she had agreed to sell so everyone could move, my house was on sale and we had an offer in on a bigger home, which was all undone as she later changed her mind.

Finally - I know people will wonder why have you gotten pregnant when this is the situation, but with no end date or visible outcome to the divorce in site and me getting close to “that age” I didn’t want to wait and risk never being able to have a baby of my own. We expected to be trying for a while but have been extremely fortunate that it’s happened right away 🫶🏽

I would like people’s opinions on our plan, any other suggestions, similar situations or what they think should happen here, the last thing we want is to push the kids out but things are already a struggle with space, them sharing, their ages and genders.

Thank you

We had a similar situation, baby stayed in with us until they was 3 and everything carried on as normal.

No overnights stopped, the older children kept their own rooms - both my own DC and my DSC. Our 'baby' moved into their own room when my eldest went to uni (after discussion and agreement from them!)

The comments about poster, should not have had a baby!

Of course she shouldn’t have had a baby with a man while attempting to alienate him from his existing living children.

Harsh comments, but this is MN where every child is expected to have their own room. I have been in your situation, was made homeless at the horrible complicated divorce (ex H tried to kill me) I was given a 2 bed "social " house set for demolition. second dh had been separated years, but never divorced. Also complicated, divorce. He had no dks, I was 40. However, we sat my 3 down at the table, told them we were hoping to have a baby. I got plenty of nasty comments. My dks had always shared bedrooms. My grandkids stay a lot,we have a 2 bed open plan bungalow (the downsize) they're 15/16 boy, girl. (Not the man-made gender nonsense) if they both stay, they share the spare room, I got bunk beds, they shower and dress in the bathroom. If they want time alone, there's the lounge/conservatory/summerhouse (not warm enough to sleep in)

Great for you but not relevant to the OP. No one is saying that all the kids (or even any of the kids need their own rooms), they are saying that his kids shouldn’t be banished.

I agree with your step kids mum

I agree that the visiting time shouldn't be reduced, but are they really expected to pay for alternative accommodation? And she is the reason the divorce hasn't been finalised, and they can't afford to move? No.

She is being incredibly inconsiderate. OP is about to have her first baby, and this is already a nightmare situation for her.

OP, your partner needs to convince her that the divorce has to go through and that they need to sort out their living arrangements. Yes, you can keep the baby in your bedroom for longer, but it's not ideal.
I moved both of mine out of our bedroom at around six months because they weren't sleeping well. It was the best decision for them. They both needed quiet and darkness, and sharing our room just wasn't working for us.

Alternatively, you may have to sell up and rent somewhere for a while until the divorce is finalised. Something needs to change, because this situation isn't fair on you.

Topjoe19 · Today 09:22

This is crazy OP. Those poor step children! You can keep the baby in with you for much longer than 5 months, that is the solution here. They don't need a bedroom until much older. Hopefully by then you'll have moved. Please do protect yourself and your child though, he doesn't scream great dad does he?

ScaredButUnavoidable · Today 09:22

Oh OP, I was cringing reading your new plan.

Those poor kids.

It really is in with the new and out with the old isn’t it.

If their dad was part of this plan he should be totally ashamed of himself and I can’t believe you feel ok about a father treating his children like this.

Having a new baby should in no way change the current arrangement he has with his current children. I’m honestly shocked.

SilverTotoro · Today 09:22

Baby stays in your room until you move. A lot of people keep their baby in their room for much longer than 5 months even when they have a room to move them into. You could potentially use the smaller room for the baby when his other children are not there swapping one of the beds round for a cot. I’m often sympathetic to step parents but the current plan is really setting his children up to feel replaced and create resentment of the new baby.

Shuffletoesxtreme · Today 09:22

Baby stays in with you until you move.

kirinm · Today 09:23

Gosh doesn’t the mother sound awful trying to keep a home for her children who are just about to be ditched by their father and his girlfriend.

When you see how old your new baby feels at 8, I hope you realise how cruel this suggestion is.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · Today 09:23

AS PP said, baby stays in with you until you move. It's the only way.

Lifeispeach · Today 09:23

I hope for the children’s sake this is nothing more than a made-up rage bait post.

if it’s not made up… pls do better for the children.

MeowDoku · Today 09:23

Those poor children, daddy can't have you overnight anymore because his new baby takes priority. Awful. Why did you move in with him knowing he had 2 children only to turf them out? Also if he's prepared to do this to his existing children he'll do it to yours too

thismummydrinksgin · Today 09:24

We were in a similar situation and kept my 2nd in our bedroom till they were 2.

havingoneofthosedays · Today 09:24

Haven’t you won the partner lottery 😆

allthingsinmoderation · Today 09:25

i think id keep the baby in your room until you are able to move to a bigger house.Sofa bed in living room for 12 yr old.
id ask myself what would we do if the children were all mine and my partners and this was our living situation.?
Would we a) keep the baby in with us until we could move and move heaven and earth to make that happen.
b) foster out the older 2 to family , so the new bay could have its own room from 5 months?

AnneLovesGilbert · Today 09:25

Ours stayed in with us till they were 2. Nothing needs to change at 5 months.

If the ex doesn’t want the contact pattern to change though she can let the financials progress quickly and then everyone can move.

People are being pretty harsh when you’re the one already housing him and his kids. He’s the one who’s chosen to have another baby in limited space that’s yours.

DozyDumpling · Today 09:25

This is awful. Those poor children.

This hasn’t been caused by a change in circumstances; you’ve chosen to have a baby knowing full well that your house is too small. You absolutely cannot let this impact your OHs existing children. How on earth he he okay with this plan?

DeeNiall · Today 09:26

Your 'need' to have a baby with a crap father was selfish.

The solution is for the DP to rent a 3 bed flat himself for him and his older DC to stay in.

lessglittermoremud · Today 09:27

Baby can stay in with you for longer than 5 months, I pointlessly decorated a nursery when my eldest was born…
He stayed in our room until he was 2 due to one thing and another.
You may also wish to have access to single beds/guest room longer than 5 months so you can alternate sleeping arrangements so someone can get a decent block of sleep.
You will be essentially binning off his prior children in favour of a new shiny baby, it’s not their fault that ‘your are off an age’ where you don’t want to wait any longer for a baby.
Those poor children, going through what sounds like a protracted and acrimonious divorce and then being sidelined by Dads new baby…

rainbowstardrops · Today 09:27

It’s too late now but why on earth bring a baby into the mix when you haven’t even got enough rooms for the step children, let alone another child!
You need to find a way to make it work without pushing his children away for a nice new shiny baby.

Rosesarere · Today 09:27

if your partner things this is ok I think you have partner problems. Can you rent out your property until you’re in a position to sell and rent a house that’s big enough for all of you. If not the baby should stay in with you so it doesn’t cause disruption to your partners other children

Since when is it normal to remain married to someone you separated from years ago, who has since moved on, has a new partner and has a baby on the way?

titchy · Today 09:28

Why can’t baby have second bedroom other than the three days a fortnight step kids are with you, when baby sleeps with you?

Owlbookend · Today 09:28

If you follow your plan, your partner's children will be aware that their Dad had a new baby and chose to reduce contact with them to prioritise that baby over them. Think about that. How do you think they will feel?

Reducing overnight contact when the baby is a newborn and does not even need a room. I have no words for that.
The only acceptable choice is to continue with overnights as they currently are and have the baby (toddler, child as they grow) in your room when the stepchildren stay. If you or your partner need to sleep downstairs on an airbed to.make this happen so be it.
Your partner will have 3 children. The only loving choice is to demonstrate by his actions thst he cares for all of them.

Edited

Having a baby is always selfish but this attitude towards the older childer is bonkers. And the partner/father seems pretty useless.
