Should my husband call his daughter during our honeymoon abroad?

Luxe50 · Today 09:16

We are on our honeymoon in Corfu. 9 year old step daughter is on holiday in Mauritius with her mum who has asked for a brief call for our step-daughter. My question is whilst this doesn’t really bother me, should step daughter be able to manage without a call for a week (we only left on Saturday). Is this about my husband’s ex partner wanting to interrupt our break. Or am I reading to much into it, I don’t have children so appreciate I may not have the best perspective on holidays and what is usual.

OP posts:

This is such a smug post. Who knows if his dd is ‘most important person in the world to him’? Certainly not anyone on this thread. It’s also a pathetic way to look at relationships. I am a mum, wife, daughter, stepmother, sister, cousins, niece and friend. Do I have to say my bio kids are ‘the MOST important’ of my relationships in order to be a valid person? Can we not have many important relationships? Obviously the parent-child relationship is a unique one, but it doesn’t eclipse all else. Your post just sets up the DD as OP’s competition - she isn’t. She’s her DH child and so it’s normal for them to speak and takes nothing away from her relationship with her DH!

A child, especially a 9 year old, should be the most important person in a parents life. That’s not smugness. A wife, a husband, a friend can all be important but they will not be the most important. The wants of OP on honeymoon, do not gazump the needs of a child wanting to speak to her dad.

So you want to recent your husband talking to his 9 year old daughter?

I give your marriage less than 18 months

If you have that attitude OP i really hope that your marriage doesn’t last. Your DH deserves better. You should know this.

Well it obviously does bother you enough. I'd be expecting him to phone his daughter every day at that age to be honest. Why do you assume it's the ex wanting to interrupt your honeymoon and not just a daughter who is missing her dad and wants to speak to him.

So would I. I can't believe OP married a man with a child when she doesn't share this attitude.

SweatyWarrenBetty · Today 12:19

Oooh deary me, the rest of your marriage is going to be hard 😂

Livelovebehappy · Today 12:25

🙄 sometimes there are no words....

nomas · Today 12:28

She’s 9, not 29!

Let him speak to his daughter FGS!

CaptainMyCaptain · Today 12:29

Didion · Today 09:17

Why shouldn't he speak to his daughter?

Your attitude towards this doesn't bode well for a happy marriage.

This. Of course it's OK for him to call his daughter. More than OK.

HollyhocksandPeons · Today 12:29

His daughter should be able to call him any time, as many times as she wants, even in the middle of the night, and several times at that.

Parent child relations certainly does eclipse all else especially when the children are young. Op's step daughter is 9 and ought to be no1 in her dad's life and it looks like she is.

Editing to add the OP herself has expressed a competing mindset as she is upset her h is having a chat with his dd. Only the most jealous types get upset when their partner has a quick chat on the phone with their relatives.

Also lol at cousin relations being en par with parent child relationships. Musmnet is getting more odd by the day.

It eclipses all else FOR YOU. You can’t presume for other people.

Good god, five minutes out of your break,to speak to his daughter,a 9 year old girl.sounds like you have no common sense, whether you have kids or not.your marriage will not fair well, you are not no 1.his daughter is.

WhyArePiratesCalledPirates · Today 12:39

Ive left my 8 year old with her dad and gone abroad for a week.
She is encouraged to call me as often as she likes.

Savvysix1984 · Today 12:39

Of course it’s ok. I’d be worried if a loving parent didn’t want to speak to their child if they were away for a week. If this is a worry for you now I dread to think what lies ahead for you.

You don't stop being a parent just because you're on honeymoon. As long as she doesn't call every hour of the day, of course she should be able to phone her dad whilst he's away.

blankcanvas3 · Today 12:40

I called my dad on my own honeymoon and I was nearly 30! so yes you’re being completely unreasonable. If DH is away without us he calls every day to speak to me/DC.

Jaimelefromage · Today 12:42

I’m surprised she was the one who requested the call and not your partner to be honest. Would you really want to be with someone who is happy to not have any contact with his child for a whole week?

thestudio · Today 12:43

blythet · Today 09:34

It’s worrying you’d even ask

This. You don't seem to have the empathy, ability to put others needs before your own, or understanding of child development which is necessary to be a stepmother.

Of course his daughter is not the most important person in his life - he would not have dumped her otherwise, he would have ensured she has a full family surrounding her. But we live in the egoistical world of 'me first' and he is trying to run with the hare and course with the hounds - i.e. pretend he prioritises his daughter.

malefields · Today 12:51

I didn’t realise honeymoons required being cut off from the world.

Have you put your phone away in a locker?

are we still of the mentality people should remain unhappily married so that the children have both parents under the same roof?

Fupoffyagrasshole · Today 12:53

he cant call his daughter but you can be on mumsnet??

Notrainingbutpouring · Today 12:54

to be honest he sounds like a terrible father that he hasn’t contacted her and she has had to ask to speak to him. I can’t imagine not being in touch with my small children for a week. Are you two considering having children? Because it doesn’t sound like either of you are particularly nurturing.

inickedthisname · Today 12:55

My 9 yo would definitely want to speak to her dad if she was away from him for a week, and would probably think it especially exciting to speak to him when they were both on holiday in other countries.

You have no idea what led to the breakdown of their relationship.
