Daughter makes inappropriate moaning nosies - how to make her stop

Gambino1726 · 14/06/2026 03:58

My daughter makes a loud moaning noise. This is really embarrassing noise, similar to someone “in the act” I find it hard to explain to her not to do it. I also ask please please be gentle with the advice. She says the kids do it at school, and I am 99.9% she has not been exposed to harmful content online, but at weekends she on kids YouTube, and I am not supervising her every second she’s on it. Please don’t judge me! I am a single parent and sometimes I just need to crack on and she wants to chill!

So when she’s playing either in a group or on her own and playing around, she sometimes makes this very loud, moan noise. The moan is akin to a sex noise. If you’ve ever seen that meme that goes around people’s phones where they ask you to turn the volume up and then suddenly a woman screams/moans really loud, she does something similar

I’ve repeatedly told her not to make this noise, she says her friends do it at school and it’s funny, and I’ve told her it’s a rude sound and mustn’t be done.

How far to I say “hey, it’s a sex noise”? They have just done sex-ed in school but of course they don’t know about the noises adults make.

I find it extremely grating and simple can’t tolerate it. How do I make her stop/and explain why not to use this noise?

How old is she?

Overtheatlantic · 14/06/2026 04:08

Take her somewhere in public and let her disgrace herself. She will know from the looks she gets that she shouldn’t do it.

Yea I know what you mean, that and the hoo yeah sound was going round the school and youth club where I work. Some youtubers do it too.
Tell her it's an inappropriate noise, it's stupid and she needs to stop. Just tell her it's a sex sound. With my youth club kids fron age 8-13 we told them it was inappropriate and if they wanted us to phone their parents and get them to make the sound over the phone to them? Or if we wanted to copy it to their kids? Kind of stopped it

Lots on reddit about it

Why is she ignoring you when you repeatedly tell her to stop? Tell her no YouTube or play dates if she csnt control herself. Or tell her you will make an appointment at the Dr's then since she can't control it and she can repeat the sound to them.
Embarrassment works

I hear you.. my two youngest at one point would choose to yell loudly that the other has anal leakage. Mind you my kids are older than your daughter. I was quite mortified...!

I think it would be appropriate for you to choose a consequence and let her know that if you hear that noise again the consequence will be xyz. You know what works best for your child, for my kids losing electronics for a period was the only thing that worked.

NiftyKoala · 14/06/2026 04:17

She's nine iwould be very hard on this. She is old enough to understand. It stops now or punishment by taking whatever she enjoys doing or playing with.

Anonyhouse · 14/06/2026 04:18

Yes she’s definitely old enough to tell her why. I had this with mine, (briefly!) it stopped immediately once I told him what it was. If educating isnt enough then you move on to consequences.

Keroppi · 14/06/2026 04:25

"Remember when we talked about how adults make babies? Well, that noise sounds like you're trying to make babies" it doesn't need to be overly elaborate.

I’d be taking her ipad off her if she cannot follow simple instructions to stop doing this. Tell her that next time she does it, she loses the ipad for 24hrs, or whatever works. Then follow through immediately. Doesn’t even matter what she is doing or why, she is blatantly ignoring you when you tell her to stop.

VashtaNerada · 14/06/2026 05:37

I taught Year 6 last year and they did this a lot. I found it really gross. It doesn’t surprise me that it’s filtered down to younger children. Another option to stop her doing it is to talk about how the world has moved on from that trend and it’s very 2025….

Lol the exact words I used to put a stop to the six-seven

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/06/2026 05:57

The more you protest and insist the more she'll do it, I think. She's got your attention, doesn't she? 🤔

noarah · 14/06/2026 06:06

My 7 year old does this. He learnt it at school. Drives me nuts.

Bbcsounds · 14/06/2026 06:10

Just impose a consequence.

Brickiscool · 14/06/2026 06:21

Some kids do it at my school. They get in trouble every time and told it's an inappropriate sound. If they make the sound they have a consequence e.g. missing break. Just tell her, you make that sound you lose iPad for rest of day

Sweetbutpsycho65 · 14/06/2026 06:30

Yep my 8 and 10 year old do it. It's horrible. But yet they continue. I just roll my eyes

superchick · 14/06/2026 06:37

My 10 year old was doing this for while but it stopped. I told him off a few times and it petered out. They'll be on to another annoying noise soon.

Dilbertian · 14/06/2026 06:55

It’s like “six severrrn”. The more fuss you make about it, the more they will do it. Do not reward the behaviour by noticing it and responding to it. Ignore it.

Franjipanl8r · 14/06/2026 06:56

Why on earth are kids making sex noises?! What the hell have I read!? My DD is 10 and I’ve never heard of this thank god.

Duvetdayneeded · 14/06/2026 07:00

Punish her… take the iPad/phone away. She’s 9 so knows better, no excuses.

REDB99 · 14/06/2026 07:01

My DD is 9 and would never do this. She’s never been allowed to watch YouTube though.
It could be worth calling the school and seeing if it’s something that lot the kids are doing?

DS aged 9 is also doing this sound too. I tell him to cut it out. He says X at school does that sound. It's playground stuff. No doubt there are children getting access to inappropriate material. I check all mine and I know it's not from our ho.e.

You're not alone on this OP.

Sorry he's almost 9yo, but roughly similar ages so it's obviously something many parents like myself are unaware of that's happening at school.
