Why do single mothers always make fathers day about them?

Why do single mothers always make fathers day about them??

You don't see single fathers jumping up and down shouting "happy mothers day to all the single fathers fulfilling both roles"

I'd imagine pretty much everyone on the planet knows plenty of dead beat Dads. Most don't know any comparable Mums though. Why shouldn't a Mum doing everything get to take credit for that? If you did 100% of a colleagues work, would you expect that to be recognised?

Do you understand that’s obviously because there’s far less of them?!?

Yes, I acknowledge that somewhere here..

Never seen anyone do this, female or male, and if I did see it I'd probably assume it was either some kind of low key family tradition (as a PP mentioned), acknowledging both roles, or intended ironically.

Can you link to a few examples so we can all see what you mean?

As someone who didn't get to be a father I think they're scum, they should make more of an effort to be part of their kids lives (assuming she isn't stopping them doing so).

You’re not a father and are spending time on the Parenting section in Mumsnet telling single mums off?

OK.

Oh mate .... wait until you see all the men kicking off on IWD saying when do men get one 😂😂 Your post pales in comparison to that

Nah, it's because we don't need one - same as "when's straight pride day" - i do actually acknowledge that.

Tigerbalmshark · 08/06/2026 14:24

I’ve never seen anyone do this, though there are enough stupid people in the world that I’m sure somebody has somewhere.

There are plenty of stupid things posted on social media on Mother’s Day too - shout out to all the mothers who never wanted to be mothers, women who are child free and hate the very idea of being a mother, and female children who might eventually want to be mothers or might not, too soon to tell?

Maybe the solution is to stop looking at the FB pages of attention-seeking idiots on FD and MD?

There literally is one, as Richard Herring never tires of pointing out. 19/06/26 is the next one.

Junejunejune · 08/06/2026 14:25

I have never seen this! But if they’re doing all or most of the parent then they should do if they want to.

SapphireSeptember · 08/06/2026 14:27

Considering I saw 'Dad' cards for mother's day (in Card Factory) but not the equivalent for mums on father's day, I don't think that's accurate.

Don't get me started on the pet mum/dad ones!

My wife and I send each other "from the Dog" Fathers/Mothers day cards - what's wrong with that?

Because it's lame as Hell, and just screams "look at me I'm a single mother aren't I great!" - as I said you never see single dads doing that.

Have you also considered that it’s often not the single mums themselves putting these posts on, but oftentimes well meaning friends/family members, or their own children (if old enough, as in my example above), who might be doing it to celebrate and “big up” their loved one whom they think deserves some recognition for the work they do?

That’s not very “LOOK AT ME!!”, is it?

pontipinemum · 08/06/2026 14:30

As someone who's father left before I was 3 I have never felt the urge to celebrate that day for anyone else. I do remember in school etc the cards the others would make.

Also I have a relative who lost his wife when their two DC were very young. You're right I don't see him looking for recognition on mothers day

aCatCalledFawkes · 08/06/2026 14:32

I'm a single mum and have always found fathers day a difficult day TBH.

  1. it reminds me I'm on my own
  2. the kids don't understand why dad is too busy to see them
  3. everyone else is busy doing fathers day things with there partners or children's dads.

I don't mention fathers day on social media and suggest you find new people to follow. Apart from my own dad I ignore it.

Single mums on benefits! Meh, tells us all how much of a twat you are mate! And no I’m not a “single mum on benefits”
ps, the answer is…..you’re a massive twat

Edited

I am but I don't post on social media all that much because I don't want my DS on the internet for all to see. DS has a deadbeat dad. At least he pays CM. Thinks I got pregnant just to 'live off him'. I know he's older and has adult children, but I'm pretty sure raising kids was a bit more expensive than that in the 2000s!

ThatLilacTiger · 08/06/2026 14:38

Why do you think?

Tryagain26 · 08/06/2026 14:38

If they are a single mother and the child has no contact with their father but brings home a card they have made at school/nursery what are they supposed to do?
Single mothers don't make fathers day all about themselves most ignore it . But if they are bringing up their child alone, they are both mother and father.

I don’t think any of us who lost our other half/childrens’ father look for recognition on Father’s Day, (in fact if I could fall asleep the night before it and wake up the day after, that would be awesome) but it doesn’t stop other people trying to do/say a nice thing for us, or in fact stop our children from deciding that they would like to celebrate us in some way, alongside remembering their dearly loved dad.

None of that equates to “look at me and how good a job of mum and dad I’m doing!” (Because a) I wouldn’t say that, it’s wanky and arrogant, and b) I don’t think I am doing a particularly good job of it).

LOL, I don't have a crazy-ex - I met my wife at 19 she's the only relationship I've had, I just see loads of SAHMs do this every year and it winds me up, I've not once seen a man do the same, granted the ration to single mothers I know to single fathers I know strongly favours single mothers but still.

This is gibberish.

You're calling single mothers wanting appreciation on Father's Day 'lame as hell' while admitting that you and your wife send cards to each other 'from the dog' on Mother's/Father's Day?

You're either on the wind up, or so massively lacking in self-awareness that I don't think there's any hope for you.

I wasn’t judging. I was calling him out for being a stupid arsehole, pigeon holing all single mums like he did. It’s just another benefits bashing, woman bashing thread. Typical man imo. Probs has mummy issues 🤷🏻‍♀️

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 08/06/2026 14:45

I’ve never seen a single mother do that.

But if the father has fucked off? Why not… I wouldn’t have it in my to get upset about this imaginary single mother getting some validation for doing it alone / doing the work meant to be done by two…

Because it's between the two of us, I don't post it on social media and shout it from the rooftops expecting some kind of recognition for my greatness.
