If he wasn’t homeless he’d be paying you less as his rent would be taken into consideration.

No, it’s not

LadyMacbethWasFierce · 29/05/2026 22:36

You are being so unreasonable it makes me think this is a reverse.

Your ex’s liability is only £7 per month.

You do not need to let him use the house for contact (though I can see how you might think it is better for the children).

And in response to a poster saying you need an address to claim benefits - that is totally, plainly, not correct.

If I ran the world (be glad I don't ) I would honestly throw men who don't pay enough child support in debtors' prison. Women don't get to decide they can't cope and can't afford parenthood.

I can see this would be very difficult, but if his entire income is £1k and currently homeless, how is he supposed to live inc accommodation on less than £650 a month?

Whats your total income; you must get a fair amount of help from the government (child benefit, UC, housing…?).

Edited

He doesn’t pay it out of his payment, the government covers it.

Would it? It’s calculated off earnings, not what outgoings you have

What country are you thinking of? Because no, the UK government is not sending £350 a month to the OP as child maintenance.

Child maintenance is paid by the non-resident parent from their one income. The OP’s ex actually should only be paying £7 a week because he is on benefits, so he is paying more by choice. The government is not paying that (they are paying his single person benefits, but… a single homeless lan wouldn’t get £1000 in benefits so this whole thread is probably bullshit).

Evilkineavel · 29/05/2026 22:49

this can’t be right as someone on benefits has a £7 a week liability.

Some people pay more than the bare minimum for their children’s existence by choice if you can believe that

Strawberrydelight78 · 29/05/2026 22:54

You don't say where he's living. If he's in a HMO that's not suitable to take children to and they won't be allowed to visit him there. Of course he needs to live. He doesn't have to pay you anywhere near what he's paying.

How are you deducing all this from OPs post?

Gillygallygosh123 · 29/05/2026 22:56

If he's receiving £1000 a month in benefits then he has a long term health condition or disability. He's being decent giving you £350 a month, legally he only has to give you £7 a week.

Given that he is paying an extra £320 a month more than he's legally required, I do think it's fair that you feed them if he's seeing them at your house. The other option is that he can take them out to feed them and pay £28/30 a month maintence for all 5 children?

No wonder this country is virtually bankrupt.

ChefsKisser · 29/05/2026 22:59

Off topic but £7??? Why even give that at all? Is that actually all men on benefits have to give their partners??

this country is out of controllll

I think it was meant to be a dry comment that the UK is paying the £1k per month to the homeless ex partner, so not really the partner who is footing the bill (money isn't earned).

Bunionbabe · 29/05/2026 22:57

No wonder this country is virtually bankrupt.

A single man will not get £1000 a month in UC. Especially if he isn’t paying rent so isn’t getting the housing element. Literally not happening.

The only way he is getting anything near that money is if he has a disability and has qualified for disability benefits. If he is disabled then he should be getting that money, or did you want to live in nazi germany and just cull the disabled? We have a duty to provide financially for disabled people if they cannot provide for themselves.

But I highly doubly this thread is genuine.

He could be a long term bum or he could be someone whose ended up with poor health or ended up disabled 🤷‍♀️ who knows? The 1000 a month in benefits leans towards a disability or long term health condition as single men on benefits do not receive 1000 pm

I agree it's nowhere near enough for 5 kids but if as you say he is homeless and on benefits with only £1k a month I don't see how you're going to get more from him.

Other options are to see if you qualify for UC to help supplement your income. Tough situation.

Is his situation a recent situation or has he always been in such a situation where he is jobless, on benefits etc for a long time?

I honestly don't care. The obsession with blaming the dad is misplaced. They are both to blame. She’s taking £350 out of £1,000 from a man who’s literally homeless, still shows up for his kids, and she’s acting like feeding them when they’re with her but he is visiting is optional. Her entitlement is off the charts, and her attitude is disgusting.

Except they do though. How many women depend entirely on the government/ ex partners to fund their children?

I agree, men which don't pay towards their children are scum. But let's not pretend that every woman goes out there and earns her way to provide for her children herself
