Is it OK to keep a bedtime bottle at age four?

In a recent post about my MIL’s comment towards DD it was highlighted that I needed to get her out of nappies, off the dummy and going to bed without her bottle. The dummy I took away straight away and we’ve been doing well since, and nappies we’re going to try this weekend. With a baby on the way in a few months time I’m inclined to leave the bottle for now as it’s only once a day and it’s her comfort before bed, plus I feel like I’ve rocked the boat enough already! What’s everyone’s thoughts? Did any of your kids keep the night bottle at 4+?

My daughter took a cup of warm milk to bed til she was about six... Ended up with two fillings. I didn't realise how bad it was for teeth. Had to stop it abruptly. That's the only thing I'd be concerned about.

MrsAmaretto · 16/04/2026 21:39

No, done and dusted with bottles by 12 months. Really bad for teeth.

Have you tried swapping to a cup with a straw?

My son had one till he was about six! He’s now 16 was absolutely no follow-up problems and I imagine it’s actually benefited from the fact that he was able to fall asleep the way he wanted to. Ignore the rest, if it works it works.

eggandonion · 16/04/2026 21:45

My bottle child preferred not to go to sleep so she did get her teeth cleaned.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/04/2026 21:47

Drink of milk before cleaning teeth? Fine.
Bottle to sleep? Hard no.
Could you put a favourite story on to lull to sleep instead?

Op is talking about day time nappies!

@DearDog96 doesn’t say it’s daytime

post sounds like it night

dummy. Nappy. Bottle /milk all at bedtime

where does she say talking about dry during the day

Lordofthebantams · 16/04/2026 21:50

She's about 3 years too old for a bottle!

somethingischasingme · 16/04/2026 21:50

Mine was having a bottle until 7. It’s so odd to remember it now but my ds was scarily ill so dd started with a bottle at 3! She was persuaded at 7 that it should probably stop but she was so good and so brave as a big sister, a bottle seemed the least of our worries!

Viviennemary · 16/04/2026 21:50

Four is really old to be still having a bottle. But hard to now get rid of it. But it does need to go.,

loislovesstewie · 16/04/2026 21:50

It should have been a cup from the age of 1.

PippaToryFripp · 16/04/2026 21:50

It sounds like lazy parenting tbh, just rid of dummy, still having a bottle and still in nappies at 4+ years?

KylieKangaroo · 16/04/2026 21:51

Mine was still having a bottle at 4 but she gave it up willingly by age 5. Her teeth are absolutely fine and she is 10 now!

DiscoBeat · 16/04/2026 21:52

By then for ours it was a bedtime glass of milk, then teeth and bed, they loved stories so we're happy to get all that done first!

She makes it clear in her other thread. I understand why someone would expect the OP to be ting about night time nappies. The dummy was also being used in the day.

MerryGuide · 16/04/2026 20:48

Isn't that pretty bad for teeth? If you wouldn't breastfeed at that age (I know some do but its unusual) then I wouldn't do bottles.
Milk before bed / teeth brushing is fine.

Not read your other thread so is nappies all the time or night time? If night time then id not make all the changes at once, spread it out a bit

yeah it’s nappies all the time I’m afraid. And dummy was mainly night but often in the day too ( gone now)

She shouldn’t be having a bottle at all at 4. Why is she still in nappies?

She just didn’t take to training at all when we tried in January! For the sake of both of us we decided ti go back to nappies for a bit.

I read your other thread and well done so far! Sounds like you are really getting on top of things and I hope potty training goes well this weekend (my advice would be to not put her back in nappies no matter what).

Bottle of milk is rubbish for their teeth so while I wouldn’t rush to get rid of it when potty training, I would be treating it as a second priority tbh. Even just a baby bottle with water instead of milk will be much better for her.

Thank you so much! I’ll try not to let her go back for sure.

and good idea, will see how she gets on with getting rid of the nappies first and go from there

It’s only once a day; it’s fine. I know a lot of children who took a long time to drop the bedtime bottle!

Glad to know I’m not alone!

Op please give me tips on the dummy its out in the daytime but still reliant on it at nighttime

I literally just had to hide them all one morning and have been paying the price since! The crying is less frequent now but she’s still asking. And substituted the dummy for her thumb which isn’t ideal

Can you change the night time bottle to a cup of warm milk before bedtime, @DearDog96 - to be followed by cleaning teeth, of course.

That’s a good idea! Do you think it would cause too much friction with the recently gone dummy and soon to be gone nappies though?

I haven’t seen or read the other thread so only going on info from op first post on this one

I was told off by my mil for not giving my children milky tea in a bottle with sugar because they need energy.

oviraptor21 · 16/04/2026 22:11

Definitely no to bottles at all and any milk to be before brushing teeth.
Nighttime nappies is still quite common at that age. If you've got her dry during the day but not.at night I wouldn't stress too much about that. Give it another go in six months or so, preferably during one of the long holidays.
