How do I talk about it to my children ?

I am a 48-year-old man with a classic style (every day in shirt, dress pants, tassel loafers) and my wife wants my both ears to be pierced with real diamonds set on yellow gold (identical to those worn by women).I have two children: a son (11) and a daughter (13). They will be very surprised to see me with both ears pierced by real diamonds. Should I talk to them about it before? How would you react if your classic-style father pierced both of his ears with real women’s diamonds? Thank you for your advice. Michael.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

If you explain that they are in fact, real diamonds, I think they will be relieved that they aren’t dealing with a cubic zirconia situation. That would be very distressing.

😆

I’d be more distressed about the loafers, frankly 😂 Perhaps you could put bells on the tassels so the tinkling sounds as you walk will distract them from your ears 🤣 A bit like Rumpelstiltskin in that fairy tale 😉

Yes, of course. Even if I am a bit stressed given my age and my classic style.

You answered here you want to do it. Why did you put this then in your OP.

Why do you want these very shiny ladies style earrings that you think will shock your children and make you look gay?

If you are finding your classic dad style a little restrictive perhaps you could add some wacky 'fun' socks or a comedy tie? 😂

Absolutely dying at this 🤣🤣🤣

If you want your ears pierced, get them done. Your body, your choice.
Unless your friends all have piercings they might think you are having a bit of a mid life crisis though!

Had to comment as this is a really odd thread that I now have too many questions?!
Do you want shiny diamonds?
Is having both your ears pierced something you’ve always wanted done and only just now doing it?
Are loafers with tassels comfortable to wear, they always look like they’d be comfy but are they practical for running around in or just ‘loafing’ around?

Anyway I think if you want to get both your ear pierced with shiny diamonds, then go ahead and do it. I very much doubt your children would think much about it.

My son has both his ears pierced, when he asked my DH if he could get them done he said no because people would think he ‘was gay’ or a weirdo…
We sat down had a chat and I explained that he was actually an idiotic dinosaur….
My son wear titanium earrings as I always suffered with jewellery allergies and I didn’t want similar for him.
He’s currently walking around with a pair of tiny purple titanium triangles in, but will wear small black hoops, dragons and a few more different shapes.
As far as I know no one has ever batted an eyelid, perhaps you are worried because you’re older?
If it gives you any confidence I work with a much older gentleman, in his 80’s that wears a magnificent pair of fairly large gold hoops. He combines the look with chinos, amazing graphic shirts and his wife makes sure he’s fairly co ordinated as apparently he can get a bit carried away!
Haven’t checked out what he wears in his feet, but if you want to alter your style, have your ears done then you should, life is too short!!

I’d consider a ruby in one ear, an emerald in the other. The red and green will be excellent for secret code.
Touch the ruby, meaning NO or STOP. Touch the emerald, meaning YES or GO!

Post a photo and we can offer better advise if new jewellery will suit you.

If you do this it is important that the ruby (portside) goes in the left ear and the emerald (starboard) in the right. Whatever you do don't mix them up. The consequences could be shattering.

This has got to be one of the most bizarre threads I’ve read on here.

IloveJonBonJovi · 21/03/2026 08:47

The rest of your outfits are more concerning that the earrings.

if I told my DH to pierce his ears he’d tell me to fuck off.

Whyischocolatebadforyou · 21/03/2026 08:51

This is a touch random however if you want your ears pierced get them pierced.

The earings are irrelevant.

If your children say something the reply is that you felt like it.

If you have raised decent human beings they shouldn't be making assumptions and if they do that is a wider conversation. Judging on appearances gets embarrassing all round.

Don't you need to put something more moveable in initially while they are healing. Who knows whether diamonds are real or not unless you tell people.

Devilsmommy · 21/03/2026 09:01

Rereading your posts it sounds like your kids already think you're gay and getting your ears pierced will just exacerbate that. So why do they think you're gay in the first place?🤔

Elanol · 21/03/2026 09:06

If they can get past tassel loafers, diamond earrings will be a breeze......

Favouritefruits · 21/03/2026 09:09

You’ll look like a right kn**bhead.

Oblivionnnnn · 21/03/2026 09:11

Get the earrings, lose the loafers.

Elanol · 21/03/2026 09:11

Is anyone else hoping this becomes a 1000 post mega thread worthy of being moved to 'classics' (the category, not the aesthetic 😁) ?

Branster · 21/03/2026 09:14

The final result would be quite chavvy, non?

Sandysandytoes · 21/03/2026 09:15

I think it depends on the state of your face / ears / hair. If you are a bald, rugby-bloke with cauliflower ears I’d be more inclined to say no.
Do you have attached lobes or hanging?
Are you more slick city boy or retro hippy? Do you have a beard and/or shaving rash? Is your wife normally this strange?

Plumbernightmare · 21/03/2026 09:16

There’s a very easy fix for this.

Just make sure you ask for “real men’s diamonds” at the piercer.

They will use a manly stun gun and an industrial laser to pierce your ears and the good ones will provide an authentic certificate of manly heterosexuality which you can show your children.

Sandysandytoes · 21/03/2026 09:19

Men’s diamonds are likely to be cheaper than women’s too.
