How do you shower with a baby?

My DD is 9 months, I used to shower when she went down for her naps when she was newborn as she would nap for 3/4 hours. I'm not a single parent but DP works until 9:30pm. My DD naps half an hour max. I can't leave her in her bouncer unattended. How am I supposed to wash my hair? Please give me tips on what you do/did

Reading these responses I feel like my DD is totally different to most people’s kids. No way would I have been able to put her in shower with toys, from point she was able to be safe sitting she’d have been moving and climbing out causing mayhem. I only wash my hair every 7-10 days when my DP has kids.

I always brought the bouncer in with me. Baby was soothed by the noise, steam etc. Think they had a wee toy too.

That's genius I never thought of her high hair

I used to put mine in their car seat in the bathroom

EmpressOfTheThread · 25/01/2025 20:43

@kiana2015 I didn't let mine cry either, but fed and safely in the cot for 10 minutes was fine.

That's just crazy. Strap her in somewhere and prioritise yourself for 15 minutes! Nothing makes me feel better than a daily shower.

  1. Put her in her cot with the monitor on.
  2. Put her in her snug floor seat where I can see her.
  3. I mostly wash my hair on a night time when she is in bed so only need a quick wash on a morning.
TeainanIV · 25/01/2025 20:46

I either showered late at night when she was asleep, brought her in the bathroom in her bouncer or (once older) sat her in the end of the bath whilst I showered and she played with her bath toys!

Mamadoola · 25/01/2025 20:47

Just pop them on the floor with a toy if they’re not yet that mobile.

I have to shower and wash my hair every morning to feel human, so the children have mainly come into the bathroom with me.

Just put her in her cot. I’ve twins and it didn’t enter my head to put their bouncers/high chairs in the bathroom with me. They were safer in their own cots. Sometimes they cried but they weren’t hurt and they couldn’t be picked up every time they were unhappy.
Having a nice shower and hair wash is important.

Christmasfizzleout · 25/01/2025 20:47

I used to shower in the evening when they were in bed or DH was home

Snapplepie · 25/01/2025 20:47

We've got an over bath shower, I strip my 10 month old off, give her a bunch of bath toys and sit her in the bath, at the other end, out of the way of the shower. It's not especially relaxing but it does the job!

Not washing your hair for a week and a half is crazy and borders on neglect for your basic hygiene needs. You it during a nap or as soon as they’ve gone down, it takes literally minutes. Once they aren’t napping you can again do it when they go to bed for the night or they should be able to play near you.

That's fine if you have a baby that naps in the cot.. not if you have one that only contact naps.
And can't be using the hairdryer once he's down for the night, would definitely wake him

Boutonnière · 25/01/2025 20:56

The two habits I developed from dealing with toddler and baby, with a DH who worked away very often, were drinking tea/coffee at whatever temperature they had sunk to when I got the chance to pick up the mug again, and doing a very, very fast and efficient shower and hair wash. They were either in bed or came into the bathroom with me, with whatever combo of seating/ toys worked - being in the shower with me wouldn’t have worked because, as others have noted, adult products are not the best to be in contact with children with eczema.

Hair or body maintenance treatments would wait until DH was around.

My ability to drink beverages at whatever temperature and to be in an out of the shower in a blink are still a running joke in our family, years on.

Nottodaythankyou123 · 25/01/2025 20:59

Mine have both gone in their bouncer in the bathroom with me if they were awake, and as they got older I’d bring toys in - my 3 year old now plays in her room happily while I shower and my 1 year old will either sit with a toy or wander between me and her sister, but I’ve never only showered when they were asleep (both terrible nappers so I’d have been stinky 😂)

BondStreet · 25/01/2025 21:00

I would just bring the bouncer/walker into the bathroom. I couldn’t be in there for hours on end but would manage enough time to wash my hair etc.

Well shower when they're awake then.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 25/01/2025 21:01

I put them in the playpen and bathed with the door open.

Its much better to not blow dry your hair than to just leave your hair greasy for 10 days!

TurkeyLurkey4 · 25/01/2025 21:05

I used to bring my babies into the bathroom, in a bouncer, with toys on it and then sing and play peekabo with them while I showered. I’d do it during the day after they’d been fed so they were pretty happy and relaxed. If they’re big enough to sit up and your shower is big enough, you can bring them in and they do water play with some bath toys!

With water.

Same as without a baby.

Kate1234567 · 25/01/2025 21:06

I used my travel cot as a playpen with lots of toys in it. Had it close to the bathroom door so we could see each other and she seemed happy. Added bonus that it folded down easily so didn’t get in the way.

Flopsy145 · 25/01/2025 21:06

I lie him on his wedge changing mat in the bathroom with me.

Mine have not been big fans of the cot. Can’t you just stick them on the floor whilst you shower? And on the floor/bed next to you whilst you dry your hair? You shouldn’t have to go without!
