If so what do you do and how old are your children?

SOmetimes, but then DS Dad doesn't live with us. We have been on a trip to Brighton beach, to the zoo and on loads of morris dancing events (DS loves to dance around to the music and his dad is quite happy to drink the beer). DS is 3.

rantingwageslave · 21/03/2008 22:05

Not all the time but, I have a 9 year age gap, so the 14 year old is not home during the day, most of the time. We try and do some stuff together but it's a bit difficult and obviously he doesn't want to come to the Natural History Museum with us next week.

rantingwageslave · 21/03/2008 22:06

Oh how did the Easter eggs go btw (it was you, wasn't it?)

We go to the beach, swimming, to watch thai boxing, zoo, cinema, etc. DS's are 5 & 3.

chankins · 21/03/2008 22:07

well we will be doing loads f fun stuff and outings from now on because we just bought a car today yay !!!!!
Haven't had one in nearly two years.
Lovely mil bought us a seven seater today,
Can't wait to pile the dc into it this weekend and go to some fun places ! Feel they have missed out on a lot.
So will be watching for any good ideas for trips not too pricey

seeker · 21/03/2008 22:10

Mine are 12 and 7. we do tons together - camping, zoo, meals out, shopping trips, swimming, beach....lots.

imaginaryfriend · 21/03/2008 22:10

Hardly ever and no reason for it other than that dp's a complete workaholic. We only have one dd who's 5 1/2 but apart from dinner time we barely see dp over the weekend, he's shut away working. If / when we do all go out together it's usually to do something special - puppet theatre / Kew Gardens that kind of thing. Dp likes to go out walking. Because we do it so rarely though, dd finds it quite hard when it's the 3 of us.

c0mfort · 21/03/2008 22:10

Its just me & the two DC's DS 6 & DD3, we do lots of things together, went tenpin bowling today. I try to at least once a week spend some out of the house quality time together either walking by the docks or to feed the ducks,a little walk or sometimes the cinema. Is this what you mean?

artichokes · 21/03/2008 22:14

My DD is only 19 months but every weekend DH, her and I spend 90% of her waking time all together. We take her swimming, to the park, to the petting farm, to friends, out to lunch etc. Or we all hang out together at home and just play or hang out.

I much, much prefer hanging out as a family to juggling care of DD between us so that we each get "me" time.

perpetualworrier · 21/03/2008 22:14

We go to "the countryside" every Sunday morning. We live in a very Urban area, so it's just one of the country parks really, but we go in absolutely all weathers, even if just for an hour. It's free, gets everyone some fresh air and exercise and it's lovely to see the DS's enjoying old fashioned simple pleasures (feeding ducks, picking blackberries, playing hide and seek) and taking an interest in nature. They're 6&4.

We also love the beach in winter. Wellies on and they can spend ages throwing stones in the water.

Hulababy · 21/03/2008 22:17

DD is nearly 6y and at weekends me, Dh and DD send most of our time together - eating out, visiting places, etc.

windygalestoday · 21/03/2008 22:23

yes we have 3 ds 14,12 and 7 and generally wherever we go we are all together(my neighbour calls us ther brady bunch)
14 year old will cancel going out with friends if we are going somewhere and even quick trip to tesco at 7pm turns into family affair-we go to town together shopping, out to parks and stuff cinema and swimming .....its always been like this we do enjoy each others company- even at night we all watch tv together or play games.

tensmum · 21/03/2008 22:24

Our kids are 8 and 13, we go swimming, rock climbing, picnics, lunch out, cinema trips, fishing, walk in the woods, and the thing I hate the most but the kids love .. bike riding (ds sits in the back as he has cp). We try to alternate, one weekend we spend money the next it is things for free.

Yes, walks, bowling, ice skating, painting, dancing, reading, days out etc etc etc.

somersetmum · 21/03/2008 22:38

We nearly always eat together as a family.
We walk into town every Sunday morning to fetch the papers / magazines for the kids.
We go to the park.
We go shopping together (not food shopping).
We have days out.
Occasionally go to cinema all together, but dcs are 5 and 10, so its hard to find a film they both want to watch.

choosyfloosy · 21/03/2008 22:45

DS is 4. Not much tbh and it's usually disappointing when we do. It was good when he was around 3 and the playground was still incredibly exciting to him - that was something we could do for a limited time, all together. DH is spending less and less time out of the house, now I come to think of it. The time he looks after ds they're usually at home.

seeker · 22/03/2008 06:50

Can I make a pleas for everyone who doesn't and who can to give it a try? Not a special outing - just a trip to the park and a drink and a cake at a tea shop? Or a trip to Woolworths to look at the toys? Or a DVD all together with a bucket of popcorn? Or a game of snakes and ladders? It's such an important bit of "family glue" and it's so important tat everyone gets to know each other properly.

OK Target For The Weekend. Everyone does one activity with all available family members!

roisin · 22/03/2008 08:02

We (me, dh, and dss 8 and 10) do loads together:
Watch a DVD together or play a board game; all help cook a meal; eat together
Go to the zoo; go for a walk; to the library; shopping; Tescos; Holidays, etc.

We're off today on holiday for a week with my brother, sil, niece (1), mum, and other brother.

I thought for a break I would book for the boys a day at an activity centre (canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, raftbuilding, etc.). It was quite expensive, but I thought they'd appreciate it. But when I discussed it with them (before I booked it) they both said they'd rather spend the time with the family

chocolateteapot · 22/03/2008 08:15

We go to the woods and make camps, the beach, park, local NT place to craft session, occasionally out for a meal, various local tourist attractions. I would really worry about friends if they didn't do this type of thing as a family as I think it is absolutely essential to be able to spend time out and about enjoying time together as a family.

chelsygirl · 22/03/2008 08:21

we seem to do everything together, kids are 7 and 10

we spent all out free time together unless one of them is invited out by friends or has a party on or an activity planned eg. footie/cubs etc.

chelsygirl · 22/03/2008 08:22

I do the shopping when they are at school, nothing worse than dragging kids round Asda!

staryeyed · 22/03/2008 09:35

ranting- yes it was me and pretty disastrous although my final product did resemble an egg a bit.

We are like Windygalestoday...Me and DH have 2 kids, 5 and 7 and always do or plan to do things as a family over weekends or holidays. If there are 2 adults in the household not working over a weekend what else happens???

We had a debate yesterday over whether I should nip to sainsburys without them and that felt really odd.....you'd think I'd relish the quality shopping time without it turning into a game of supermarket sweep but it just felt odd not being with them at a weekend.

Psychomum5 · 22/03/2008 09:47

we try to, depending on money/time/working etc.

when we do get to go out, it is to the pictures/ice skating/ swimming/chopping other than for food altho we do the food shop together too if we have family coming for dinner(liek we have planned for tomorrow if all are better here)/go crabbing down the quay/to the beach for a walk/out to the forest/over rock-pooling at kimmeridge....

all sorts really..

ours range in age from 5 - almost 14!
