Those four young men who died in Wales

My heart breaks for them and their families, they looked a looked a lovely bunch of young men, with bright futures and just wanted a bit of independence and fun as they should do at that age before it all went horribly wrong. My DS is a similar age.

Absolutely tragic

My heart goes out to them all

PureHoney · 21/11/2023 22:07

I feel the same. It’s really upset me, those poor boys.

exexpat · 21/11/2023 22:08

It is very sad. I wonder if it is time for the UK to bring in rules like they have in some other countries, which restrict young new drivers from driving with same-age passengers in the car? I think there are stats showing that a car full of teenagers with a teenage driver has a much higher risk of serious accidents.

Sunday12 · 21/11/2023 22:08

Yes it’s so unimaginably awful. The poor boys. And their families. They are in my thoughts

HowNice23 · 21/11/2023 22:10

I think it's best not to post especially if you mention sons the same age who are still alive. I don't think those families are going to take much comfort coming across such posts. It's a bit like when people say they're 'hugging their own children a bit harder tonight'... A bit insensitive because that's exactly what they can't do. Of course it's desperately sad.

I do wish this rule was in place. I worry about my sons driving in the future. I agree, they looked like lovely lads and I am so sorry for their families.

jackles · 21/11/2023 22:14

I had some close shaves when I was a new driver with no-one else in the car. I think most people do, it takes a while to get used to how fast is safe to take a corner, whether there's time to overtake etc. From where the accident seems to have happened I'd assume it was inexperience in this case, not showing off.
So sad.

PersonaNonGarter · 21/11/2023 22:15

I started another thread on this but it filled up with posters telling people not to post or how to post etc.

It’s really hard because it hits so close to home. The boys look like nice lads out with friends.

caringcarer · 21/11/2023 22:18

It's a terrible tragedy. They look such lovely boys from their photos. How awful for their families.

It doesn't necessarily involve showing off, more that inexperience combined with any kind of distraction in the car can be very dangerous. And obviously in this case, tricky roads and bad weather. A horrible combination of circumstances.

wokbun · 21/11/2023 22:21

My thoughts with the families

Vettrianofan · 21/11/2023 22:24

It's one of the reasons that DS will be using only his Young Scot card up to the age of 21 for travelling around before embarking on lessons due to this sad news. Absolutely tragic to hear this afternoon. What a waste of four young lives.

justasking111 · 21/11/2023 22:28

I know these roads have driven them for years. I still grip the steering wheel and worry. The weather was bad here this weekend, add in wet leaves twisty narrow roads even experienced older drivers struggle under these conditions.

RudsyFarmer · 21/11/2023 22:30

I’ve never heard of laws like that. I’d appreciate them too. Im also nervous about my son reaching diving age and going off into someone else’s car who might have had a drink or start showing off.

user701 · 21/11/2023 22:34

I genuinely think they should increase the age that kids can learn to drive. 17 is just too young.

Completely agree. My brother is 19 and even the idea of him driving is quite terrifying!

itsfinallytime · 21/11/2023 22:43

It's terribly sad and I have a 17 year old son who is going to learn to drive after his A - levels.

I lived in France a few years ago, as a student, and road accidents/ fatalities were really commonplace amongst teenagers in France in those times, partly due to lax alcohol laws.

I'm not sure that laws to prevent Yp from travelling together is the answer though, accidents do happen. It is so terribly sad for all of these young men and their families. RIP boys.

CeeChynaa · 21/11/2023 22:55

I don’t listen to the news so only discovered this situation when it was posted earlier on, on here. This is so, so sad💐

I think it’s really commendable that a group of only 16-18 year olds decided to go on a camping trip. I’m mid 20s and I don’t even think I could do that with people my age as I’d be too scared.

It’s really unfortunate that their trip ended this way. I can’t imagine how the families are feeling either. How tragic especially at their age

That sounds a good idea. It is the most terrible tragedy, my heart goes out to their families. Teenagers feel invincible and are still learning driving skills, it is so easy for something to go wrong that they don’t have experience of. DH is very upset at the news and was talking of a friend of his who was the first to get a car, and who always drove just a little bit faster than the speed at which he could really control it well.
My Swedish friend talked about her test which involved driving onto a nice rink and skidding, she was trained in how to deal with that sort of thing because of Sweden’s Winters, maybe we need more training in driving in heavy rain and difficult conditions here too.

Itrymybestyesido · 21/11/2023 22:58

I've felt affected by it too. These are someone's babies. My brother at 16 drove a car off a road into a deep ditch. He illegally had a friend in the car. They both survived but it could have ended badly. He was a sensible teenager but it just goes to show that 16 or 17 is just too young to make these decisions.

Cleebope2 · 21/11/2023 23:11

New Zealand have excellent laws on restricting new drivers and the passengers they can take. I wish we had the same laws. This is a horrible accident. Always reminds me of Jamie Dornan who lost 4 friends in sixth form who drive to Donegal for a weekend. It happens again and again.

Angrymum22 · 21/11/2023 23:13

Such a tragedy. I was working today but kept checking the news. I really hoped they would find them, perhaps a little wet and cold but ok.
I was in the car on the way home when I heard the news and sobbed.
One of the toughest parenting milestones is when they go solo after passing their driving test. Every time they leave the house you hold your breath a little.

SirenSays · 21/11/2023 23:13

Such sad news. When the car wasn't immediately found I'd really hoped they'd gone to a party instead and were sleeping off a hangover.

Avatartar · 21/11/2023 23:18

They looked lovely young men. I was hoping they’d be found sheltering in the mountains. So terribly sad.

Dartmoorcheffy · 21/11/2023 23:22

So unbelievably sad. They were off on an innocent adventure by the sounds of it. Not messing about or doing anything illegal. They did look like lovely lads with such promising futures ahead of them. I can barely imagine how their families are coping. I lost my best friend in a motorbike accident almost 2 years ago and the pain of that still physically gets me whenever I am reminded of him. My heart breaks for them.
