Those four young men who died in Wales

My heart breaks for them and their families, they looked a looked a lovely bunch of young men, with bright futures and just wanted a bit of independence and fun as they should do at that age before it all went horribly wrong. My DS is a similar age.

Just tragic.
Been thinking about them since the awful update this afternoon.
Like others hoped they would be found sheltering in the mountains somewhere.
So young and so much life ahead of them, you can't help but think of your own dc of a similar age and how fragile life is.

mugofstew · 21/11/2023 23:26

In my state Teens can't drive overnight or have more than one teen passenger in their car.

It is such a waste.

Namenumber3 · 21/11/2023 23:27

I was really affected to hear this news. My DS is the same age. Their poor poor families. And this close to Christmas. Absolutely heartbreaking.

'We do not know why the vehicle came off the road. The weather conditions were bad at the time but posters are speculating that it was reckless driving because of their age.

The thread is ghoulish and the posters are a bunch of ambulance chasers.'

I forgot to add 'grief hijacker's'

Nordlo · 21/11/2023 23:29

I'm surprised none of the parents could track their phones. It would have meant finding them so much faster.

I agree

I also cried when I heard the news. Absolute worst outcome after initially hearing they were missing. My heart breaks for the families.

IridescentShadow · 21/11/2023 23:37

Three were in my Daughter's year at School then VIth Form College: she knew them, as you do when you're in the same environment for such a long time. The moment I saw their names and photos, I recalled the one she'd pointed-out at Parents' Evening. They were just ordinary Boys. It's shaken her, as it is the first premature death that has been so close.

Mitherinmolecules · 21/11/2023 23:38

So sad. Absolute parents' nightmare. My daughter is 17 and one of her pals' passed her test and got her first car last week ( 18 years old ) and the wee shites decided to drive about until 2 am in the morn. We were all worried sick! They won't be told and think they are invincible! I feel for these boys' parents. So desperately sad.

Dartmoorcheffy · 21/11/2023 23:45

Its possible they didn't have trackers on their phones or very likely in an area with a bad signal. The roads are very treacherous there and an even experienced drivers would take them with caution. It was bad weather, lots of leaves on the roads after the recent storms. It probably wasn't reckless driving, just simple inexperience to the roads and the conditions. It's been on my mind all day hoping they had broken down and taken shelter but were lost . I was absolutely gutted when I heard the outcome .

Oh please grow up. This thread is leading to discussion about future prevention.

SheTookChances · 21/11/2023 23:49

And this close to Christmas.

Because it would have been much better in April?

There’s been 3 threads I’ve seen now, all full of people who really don’t think. Talk of silver linings and saying at least they died together. Ffs.

Mejustme4 · 22/11/2023 00:26

The news that these poor lovely boys died has really been so upsetting. As a Mum I was uncompromising with my children when teenagers.Be the only passenger and no alcohol or drugs involved ! Obviously we do not know the circumstances, probably wet roads and leaves.
I hasten to add do not blame the parents ….cannot imagine how they are feeling/ coping. Absolutely tragic beyond words 😢Xx

AllWeWantToDo · 22/11/2023 00:29

It's certainly a worry when your teen/young adult child learns to drive. Other people on the road , weather conditions, inexperience as a new driver etc . So much can happen . Its incredible sad .

Am so sorry. I hope your daughter and her friends will have help to comprehend this awful tragedy.Xx

SirVixofVixHall · 22/11/2023 00:35

I didn’t suggest it was reckless driving ! I said that very young drivers lack experience and so might make decisions that an experienced driver would not, or not cope well with very rough weather. That is not any judgment at all on these beautiful young boys who have lost their lives. It could be any teenager, fresh behind the wheel, facing a sticky moment that they don’t have experience of.
Perhaps there are ways to support new drivers better, so that there are fewer accidents.

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 22/11/2023 00:45

My heart breaks for the families.

Those poor boys must have been so frightened their death must have been horrific and lonely 😔

IridescentShadow · 22/11/2023 00:48

@Mejustme4 thank-you. As I said, she knew them rather than spent a lot of time with them but, in the way these things are, her Best Friend was good Friends with the Boys' GFs. I think it is the nearness of death which is the shock.

I genuinely send my condolences and love to everyone . The boys all looked so lovely and cannot imagine how their parents are . I send my thoughts to you all 💕

Kokeshi123 · 22/11/2023 01:03

I think it's best not to post especially if you mention sons the same age who are still alive. I don't think those families are going to take much comfort coming across such posts. It's a bit like when people say they're 'hugging their own children a bit harder tonight'... A bit insensitive because that's exactly what they can't do. Of course it's desperately sad.

I doubt very much whether the grieving families are trawling Mumsnet tonight.

As PP said, the UK needs laws which restrict the ability of teenagers to drive other teenagers about. Even nice kids are pretty daft at this age. It only takes one distracted moment behind the wheel.

Oh be quiet and grow up.

The parents are not going to be reading this thread .

HoppingPavlova · 22/11/2023 01:53

I wonder if it is time for the UK to bring in rules like they have in some other countries, which restrict young new drivers from driving with same-age passengers in the car?

We have something like this, so would be interesting to see how our stats differ (also made problematic in that it’s not national here, but State based here and with all States having different rules). I can’t recall the specifics but I think for first year or so after getting license, mine could only have one passenger in the car and either no passengers after dark, or couldn’t drive after dark. Then after a year it slowly increased until more experience gained and they went onto regular licenses with no restrictions.
