Word for toddler girl private parts...

Weird question, sorry! Huge searchable history on here, I'm not a troll!

With ds it was easy - willy is freely used across the UK.

But I want dd 20 months to have a word to describe her vulva/vagina, for if she's hurt, needs a wee, has a uti etc. Right now she seems to think it's her bottom as I refer to changing her bottom/nappy. I don't want something ridiculous like flower, or something gross like minge or fanny. What's usual in your home/circles/region? She knows when she needs a 'wee wee' from copying her big brother. I could use that I suppose?

Vulva of course. Euphemisms are naff at best, dangerous at worst (not RTFT but presume PPs will have outlined safeguarding risks).

Mum2jenny · 13/10/2023 21:27

Never heard of the term lily, just daft imo

If I had a girl I'd consider lilly as the female equivalent of willy.

Because why?

As PP said, the baby names thread is that way >

SquigglePigs · 13/10/2023 21:32

We use "bits". It's what I grew up with and it works for us. I still knew the biological names and so will DD but this works more casually.

For everyone that says it's just a body part, why does it need a different name - we do it for loads of body parts:

Penis - willy
Tummy - stomach
Throat - esophogus
Boobs - breasts
Bum/butt - bottom

And maybe less commonly:
Noggin - head
Tootsies - toes

Twillow · 13/10/2023 21:36

Mini, fairy, foof and the like are tweeisms like calling a penis a weeny. Willy is so simple and common, as well as used by all ages and it can't be confused with anything else and it's not the anatomical term like vulva is. I go with front bottom.

Its5656 · 13/10/2023 21:37

We have always used the words penis and vagina. You mentioned escaping the how are baby's born conversation.. In my opinion it's better to be honest in an age appropriate way. When my son asked me about pregnancy (approx 7yrs) I told him.. During puberty boys produce sperm and when your an adult and have sex that sperm can mix with a girls egg and result in a baby. No need to make it a weird and awkward subject.

And what did you say when he asked what sex was ? He's 7, I wouldn't like explaining the act of sex to a kid personally

GoodVibesHere · 13/10/2023 19:52

Well, as my post says, I'd say I'm sore down there. To a friend I'd prob say my foof. I must add that thankfully I've never been sore down there Grin but friends have definately said to me they're got foof issues Grin and we knew exactly what she meant.

You don't need to teach a toddler vulva/vagina/clit etc.

Oh my dear god - how old are you ? I can imagine my late grandmother saying " down there" or " foof" - she was born in 1914 ! My DM is a bit of a hippy we were taught vagina or vag for short as chidren in the 80's.

aveline161 · 13/10/2023 21:39

Hate all this vulva bollocks (so to speak)- my 6 year old knows she had a VAGINA but we rarely need to discuss that, her issues tend to be around her WEEHOLE and how many toddlers are going to learn to say urethra with ease? A willy is a willy, we are more complex. So you need two terms, vagina being one and a specific wee hole word, that is easy to say. Like wee hole. Hideous i know!

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/10/2023 21:42

Are you relying on the school? I mean at some point someone has to explain sex to children, whether that's at 7 or 15.

Outwiththenorm · 13/10/2023 21:42

We made an effort to use vulva with our DC but like others I admit DH and I winced a little saying it at first. Now I’m glad. RECLAIM THE VULVA. Knowing the correct word for her parts has already been useful when trying to diagnose an unpleasant condition in DD.

(I’m also another who would not know what a foof was and assume muff.)

crankit · 13/10/2023 21:46

@MrsTerryPratchett I wasn't told about it by my parents, I just remember being about 10 and suddenly being aware of it, probably from peers and school

YouAreBeingUnbearable · 13/10/2023 21:51

@SawX I completely agree. Seems highly unlikely that any professional in that sphere would go against NSPCC guidelines too.

Surely that's not something to aspire to ? My children never haven't known about sex IFYSWIM as did I, I always knew where babies cane from ( as I said my Mum is a bit of a hippy).

Patchesofdrizzle · 13/10/2023 21:52

My daughter's pronunciation of vulva was so mangled when she was little that we went with vagina - not as accurate, but clear enough for safeguarding, reintroduced vulva when she was a bit older, now she's a teen she uses the lovely term 'her bits'.

DaisyChain16 · 13/10/2023 21:52

@Vinrouge4 what's Father Christmas or the tooth fairy got to do with it?
Literally baffling.

Scaraben · 13/10/2023 21:53

I've taught my daughter vulva, vagina and bottom.

Nursery were a little perplexed when she apparently told her key worker she had an itchy vulva aged about 3, but went with it. She's 5 now and this is the terminology used at school.

We're HCPs and are perhaps less squeamish about using correct terms than the general population

Blessedbethefruitz · 13/10/2023 21:54

@Its5656 Well he asked how he was born. The first time he was a young 2 and my tummy was unzipped. The second time was a few months later and we'd gotten a plastic dr play kit with a scalpel so I explained and showed him the scar. Obviously he'll know what usually happens soon when we discuss bodies again, but cesarean is 25% of births in the UK I think? So it's not a lie. It's how he was born.

We call it a minnie

I wanted her to have a name like Willy she could use in a casual way. I also teach her the proper anatomical words. Simples.

diamondpony80 · 13/10/2023 21:55

Yourebeingtooloud · 13/10/2023 19:30

We used vulva but also ‘girl bits’. Which is a bit naff but clear enough if needed to communicate to others.

We use both of those too!

midnitghtgraveyard · 13/10/2023 21:57

Am i the only one that thinks WTF Is up with MN.

You can talk to your child about it but a whole thread on what to call it.
Yesterday it was someone wanting to watch her son take a piss.
This afternoons post was partner not wiping is backside.
Tonight is what can a toddler call her privet space.

Yes i know i will get someone that will quote me and tell me im in the wrong.

And willy for a boy's penis is less daft? That's used pretty universally.

I'd actually be quite interested to know what the Venn diagram of Elf on a fucking shelf and 'foof/mini/flower' looks like. More of a circle than the vagina one I'm willing to bet. Twee is as twee does.
