Do primary school girls not wear trousers?

DD just started reception, she wore a skirt the first couple of weeks when it was hot. Last week it was raining so I put her in trousers. All the boys are in trousers now rather than shorts but every girl in her year that I've seen is still in a skirt. This morning I was looking around on the way in and out of school and I didn't see a single girl in trousers. I'm just thinking aren't their legs cold? I remembered when I was in infant school a couple of times when I was the only one in trousers and I remember feeling really embarrassed about that, and my DD loves skirts so I bought her some thick tights and put her back in a skirt so she's not different from the others. But that's so much more difficult in the bathroom isn't it? Do girls start wearing trousers in winter when it's proper cold??

In our primary the girls most definitely wear trousers but it’s more the older ones than the littlies
the girls with skirts wear tights so I don’t think are particularly cold

Comedycook · 27/09/2023 10:33

I noticed most girls stay in skirts but just switch from socks to tights. When my DD was in primary though she mainly wore trousers...tights are a faff. I used to buy her the soft jersey trousers with no fastenings. I found them most practical for her.

Depends on the school I think. We changed school and it was different, at the first some did wear trousers.

My daughter never wore trousers at any school, I think a few girls did but not the majority. My dd chose skirts. Kids never seem to get cold. My teens rarely wear coats even in winter

SuperNoodleDoodle · 27/09/2023 10:34

Very few girls wear trousers in my DD's school.

In the cold weather they just wear thick tights, DD included.

Qilin · 27/09/2023 10:34

Mix of girl's clothes at my infant school: skirts, pinafores, dresses, culottes, shirts and trousers.

Many choose skirts and pinafores in the wet to avoid the dampness from the ground seeping up trouser legs if they are a bit long.

As an adult I only ever wear dresses really. I wear them with thick tights in the cold so my legs are as warm as if I was wearing trousers tbh. Infact I find it warmer usually.

TropicalTrama · 27/09/2023 10:41

I don’t see how tights are any harder for the loo than trousers. They’re loads easier as it’s just pull up/down whereas boys trousers tend to have zips and fiddly clasps. Pinafores probably even better than skirts though as there’s then no confusion about what goes down and what goes up as they can still be a bit of a liability at aged 4 🤣

But in answer to your question my kids are at a private and there’s no trouser option for girls. It’s a pinafore for infants and skirt for juniors. You can get really warm tights though- we have merino ones and some fleece lined ones for really cold days and they’re far cosier than the thin trousers the boys have.

Singleandproud · 27/09/2023 10:44

DD always preferred trousers and didn't care what others said. She liked the pull on Jersey material ones from M&S, Sainsbury do cheaper similar but thinner ones which are better in warm weather but don't wash as well.

Infants 'fashion' seemed to be encouraged by the parents particularly when it came to the girls hair. They all seemed to have hair down to their bum which was entirely unmanageable by the child. When my DD decided to have a pixie cut in Yr 1 the other mothers were shocked I could let her do that to her hair which seems entirely daft to me.

If your DD wants to wear a skirt and tights AND can manage them herself especially on PE days then let her. If not keep them for the weekend until she has the skills to do them herself. For us trousers were always worn on PE day and skirts on the others until she decided to only wear trousers.

shaniahoo · 27/09/2023 10:49

Hmm this is clearly something I just don't get because I've never worn a skirt in my life and I only wear a dress on special occasions!
@Singleandproud I've noticed the hair thing too, DD has a bob cut because I don't have any idea how to do a ponytail/plait etc, every single other girl at school has long hair with some kind of accessory and I just don't know how they find the time in the morning!

Mostly pinafores in DDs class (year 1) but more trousers as you go up the school. I like the pinafores as they cover up her polo shirt and are harder to stain!

DD wears black leggings under hers instead of tights as she finds them easier to pull up.

SkankingWombat · 27/09/2023 10:55

My yr3 is still in summer dresses, because the alternative is shirt & tie! She has until half term, when the uniform switches to shirt & tie only. She prefers a pinafore and tights with it, as do most her age, although some girls choose trousers of skirts.
My yr5 is in trousers.

We've always given the choice to DCs, but I suspect it is more common at primary age for the choice to be made by parents who don't always make it based on practicality (see also: Mary Jane-style shoes).

Singleandproud · 27/09/2023 10:57

@shaniahoo before DD had a pixie cut she had long hair and did ballet so I became a pro at buns and French plaits etc. Didn't use the skills for years as DD always had a pixie cut, or now as a teen a number 2 undercut with it long on top. I found it quite funny that my plaiting skills were called upon again when DD started playing Rugby (as far away from ballet as an activity can get really) and they French plait their hair to avoid it being pulled by the other team!

NoSquirrels · 27/09/2023 10:59

Mine went through definite phases - skirts/dresses only YR-Y2, Y3-5 was exclusively in trousers, Y6 went back to skirts/summer dresses. Wouldn’t be seen dead at secondary in trousers although some girls do wear them. She was fairly typical for her year group I’d say, about a 50-50 split in middle years of trousers to skirts, but in younger years all but 1 girl wore skirts.

If your DD doesn’t care, dress her in whatever you feel is suitable. My DD had very loud opinions at age 4-5 (and still
does now!)

LittlePlumTree · 27/09/2023 11:00

In my daughters school no not really the girls don’t wear trousers. Dd prefers dresses.

gogomoto · 27/09/2023 11:01

Mine always had a pair of school shorts trousers but preferred pinafores then skirts. They always wanted long hair and plaits and yes it's time consuming!

Whitewolf2 · 27/09/2023 11:05

I was a bit clueless when dd1 first went to school and hadn’t realised there were school trousers for girls, but now both dds go to school in them (yr3 and yr1) as they much prefer them to tights.

CoodleMoodle · 27/09/2023 11:06

DD has worn trousers from Reception. She also wears skirts and either a pinafore dress or the polo shirt dress, with tights or socks depending on the weather.

She's Y5 now and prefers trousers.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 27/09/2023 11:07

My dd wears dresses/pinafores with thick tights in winter as do her peers. I let her pick her clothes within reason and that's currently her preference. Although I'm not particularly bothered because she's tall her age and the trousers which fit length wise look ridiculous bunched up on the waist. Her big brother refuses to tuck his shirts in for the same reason.

Pe isn't a problem because since covid they just go in their kits.

As for hair, it takes me 5 minutes to brush and plait her waist length hair. The biggest pain is fitting it under her swim hat for swimming. However she's 5 and wants it long so I manage.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/09/2023 11:07

Lots of girls at my son's school wear trousers (although they are mostly in shorts as it is still warm here).

randomsabreuse · 27/09/2023 11:08

At the straight up and down skinny stage, pinafores for the win. DD who is 8 still fits in a 3-4 extra extra long skirt so skirts and trousers are difficult to get to fit. She does have some trousers but I have to take in the waist as most girls' trousers lack the adjusters, so I prefer pinafores as I am not great at sewing.

Her class are a mix among the girls, pull up jersey trousers, skirts and pinafores all get worn!

ProfessionalCornflake · 27/09/2023 11:09

My DD won't wear trousers or tights, she says they are uncomfy and it's not worth the morning battles. Best I can do for her in winter is knee socks with her dress! Even when it's freezing and her legs must be so cold she just won't. Others her age at her school seem to be similar, it's mostly the older girls who wear trousers.

Ostryga · 27/09/2023 11:09

Dd point blank refuses to wear trousers, she wears skirts or dresses, tights and boots in winter.

It’s one of those thing I don’t get worked up over. If she wants trousers at some point then I’ll buy them.

Hair takes less than 5 mins. It’s ponytail, plait or bun. If we have more time I’ll French braid it or put it into 2 buns etc.

WandaWonder · 27/09/2023 11:12

If the schools allows choice why not just let the children decide what they wear, why do parents need to dictate?

ingenvillvetavardukoptdintroja · 27/09/2023 11:18

I can't get my 5 year old to wear trousers or joggers, she calls them fat trousers which is depressing. I don't wear trousers much but that's cos I can't fit my tummy in them! Might have made her think only men wear them.
She does have leggings to wear under dresses or skirts as tights fall down all day

Secondaryschoolstress · 27/09/2023 11:18

DD wears trousers or shorts. But again she’s one of very few. She’s done this throughout her time at primary.
