Do primary school girls not wear trousers?

DD just started reception, she wore a skirt the first couple of weeks when it was hot. Last week it was raining so I put her in trousers. All the boys are in trousers now rather than shorts but every girl in her year that I've seen is still in a skirt. This morning I was looking around on the way in and out of school and I didn't see a single girl in trousers. I'm just thinking aren't their legs cold? I remembered when I was in infant school a couple of times when I was the only one in trousers and I remember feeling really embarrassed about that, and my DD loves skirts so I bought her some thick tights and put her back in a skirt so she's not different from the others. But that's so much more difficult in the bathroom isn't it? Do girls start wearing trousers in winter when it's proper cold??

When my daughter was in primary school, the children could wear leggings or joggers (as well as more formal uniform), in the winter. So 95% of children wore leggings or joggers. I mean it's primary school, the uniform isn't even compulsory until secondary.
I'm rubbish with hair too. But a simple ponytail is literally brush hair and grab hair, and tie with bobble or scrunchie. It can be done more tidily, but if I can do it, anyone can. Much easier than maintaining a bob (I've done that for myself in the past and it's tricky to make it look neat).

Neither of my DDs have ever wore trousers to school, and I can't say many of the girls do, although I've never really gone out of my way to look. Younger one is in pinafores, and eldest one has decided she doesn't like pinafores anymore, and is now wearing skirts most days. They're still holding out on tights though, although I can't see them lasting much longer with just socks!

My daughter wears trousers. Occasionally wears a dress but she prefers trousers. She’s a Tom boy and loves to copy her brother and is just more comfortable in them!

as an ex primary school teacher I can tell you that tights are 100 x harder for little girls than trousers.
Most younger kids trousers are elastic waist and all the girls jersey trouser styles are just pull up.
Tights are hard, negotiating tights and a skirt is a pain, by the end of the day amny girls are wearing their tights with crotch half way down their legs which is really uncomfortable.

then they start doing pe and those girls trying to turn thier tights the right way round (becuase when you take them off the turn themselves inside out) and then trying to put them back on.

Please just put them in trousers!
Or pinaofres and long socks, that works well

I only have boys but agree that most girls at our primary wear skirts or dresses. I do feel sorry for the YR teachers on PE days! I think a lot of it is governed by the parents who want their girls to wear cute skirts etc... my friend won't let her DD wear trousers unless it's on a PE day which seems a shame to me.

DD has always worn trousers / leggings / shorts.

M&S do quite acomplex range or trousers, but mostly only availabel online

skinny = slimmer round the top for same length
oversize? (can't remember what they call them) = wider round the top for same length.

plus their standard ones in the middle.

They also do an extra long for longer length in the standard size.

AhhSlippedOnMahBeansRitaaa · 28/09/2023 10:37

My DD is 9 and has never once worn trousers to school despite me buying them every year for the colder weather.

YouNeverCanTellWithBees · 28/09/2023 10:38

Dd is really skinny so trousers just wouldn't fit her. She wears leggings at home but leggings aren't allowed for school uniform, except on pe days. We walk to school so at the moment she's wearing warm tights was she's cold in the mornings. Most girls in her year wear pinafores/skirts too. I didn't wear trousers til I was maybe y6.

Dd also has long hair because she likes it long. I think it looks much neater in a ponytail etc than down.

They're still not great for very slim kids. In reception the M&S smallest age 2-3 were still too baggy on the tightest button for my son. He's now in year 2 and the age 3-4 are still on the tightest setting.

He's not abnormally small, he's on the smaller size but he's not the size of a 3 year old. All school clothes are ridiculously big.

beanii · 28/09/2023 10:40

Cold? 🤣 It's September 🤦‍♀️🤣 it's not cold.
Shockingly - despite what social media may try and brainwash you - most (not all before I'm jumped on) little girls prefer skirts or dresses.
My daughter wore a pinafore dress in colder months and summer dress in warmer months.

NerrSnerr · 28/09/2023 10:40

An example of school clothes being big, my 9 year old who is about 126cm wore her brother's t shirt by accident to school the other day, age 3-4 and none of us noticed. It wasn't too tight or too short.

Rachykins · 28/09/2023 10:47

My daughter aged 7 hates trousers. I think it’s just simply more common that young girls prefer wearing skirts or dresses with tights. I actually think tights are easier than faffing around with a clasp or button on trousers. I’ve tried many times to suggest my daughter wears trousers on horrible days.. but she really doesn’t want to 🤷🏻‍♀️

starrynight009 · 28/09/2023 10:53

My daughter has just started reception and she wears trousers as I put her in leggings at home. I might get some dresses when it starts getting hot. Now you've asked I've realised that I haven't paid any attention whatsoever to what the other girls are wearing. Best way to be ;) Do whatever you and your daughter want to do.

SquigglePigs · 28/09/2023 10:54

My DD has just started reception. She has the option of trousers, skirts or pinafore dresses (or little summer dresses in summer). We tried on a range of all of them and she picked skirts and dresses as the most comfortable. . She wears decent thickness tights with them for school and seems happy enough.

A large amount of her non-school wardrobe is dresses too, by her choice!

DoctorDogs · 28/09/2023 10:55

All through primary and secondary, I only wore trousers if it was PE day, or we were going on a trip. In winter, I wore fluffy tights under my skirt and was fine.

It was in the rules that we had to wear our skirts unless told otherwise, though many girls went against this with no issues. I actually preferred my skirt so it wasn’t an issue for me at all. Even as an adult I still feel best in skirts or dresses though 😂

Needmorelego · 28/09/2023 10:58

@steppemum yes tights are a nightmare for nursery/reception age ones. My daughter's school said it was fine to wear leggings under the skirts or dresses if needed.
I remember when my girl was in reception she had a wee accident. The school had changed her into a pair of the emergency pants plus rather bizarrely a pair of bright pink tights (uniform was dull old grey). I am still (10 years on) baffled how a pair of bright pink tights ended up in the spare clothes pile. Where did they come from? Who was missing their pair of pink tights?
My daughter thought it was hilarious to be in pink tights at school.

Phos · 28/09/2023 10:58

Trousers are not part of the uniform for girls at my DDs school. She just wears thick tights when it’s cold.

Bertiesmum3 · 28/09/2023 10:58

It’s still only September, so still mild, even I’m still wearing shorts n a t-shirt, children here are still in shorts/skirts.

Needmorelego · 28/09/2023 11:01

@steppemum I actually just remembered that for a while at my daughter's school there was a bit of a fashion for the older girls to wear their tights underneath the PE shorts when doing PE. It apparently wasn't about modesty or anything - they just couldn't be arsed with the faff of taking tights off and putting them back on again.

Wanttomakemincepies · 28/09/2023 11:01

My son in reception has a cardigan. He likes it and he says it has buttons like a gingerbread man. He hasn’t said he doesn’t want to wear it and he chose it. Think at this age, it’s a bit of a non issue. Let them wear whatever uniform item they want.

GG1986 · 28/09/2023 11:06

My daughter wore skirts or dresses with tights in reception, then in year 1 we got trousers for the winter(her best friend wore trousers so she wanted to also). She wears a mixture of skirts, dresses, trousers throughout the week now.

quite a lot of pe is done barefoot in the hall, so that wouldn't always work

Trousers are not part of the uniform for girls at my DDs school. She just wears thick tights when it’s cold.

this has be succesfully challenged in many state schools.
It is unlikely that a state school can get away with this as soon as it is challenged.
It is considered discriminatory.

In schools for example in muslim areas, many girls wear trousers due to the need to cover up their legs. Sometimes skirts and leggins a little like a shalwa kamis but more often trousers.

So they are breaking the discrimiation act if they do not allow girls to wear trousers

It also just massively pisses me off.
It goes in the same box as girls coats being less thick and warm than boys, (although that has improved) and girls school shoes not keeping their feet dry in the rain and so on.

steppemum · 28/09/2023 11:19

I do think thin leggings under skirts are a great option for those girls who want to wear skirts but tights are too difficult
