Do primary school girls not wear trousers?

DD just started reception, she wore a skirt the first couple of weeks when it was hot. Last week it was raining so I put her in trousers. All the boys are in trousers now rather than shorts but every girl in her year that I've seen is still in a skirt. This morning I was looking around on the way in and out of school and I didn't see a single girl in trousers. I'm just thinking aren't their legs cold? I remembered when I was in infant school a couple of times when I was the only one in trousers and I remember feeling really embarrassed about that, and my DD loves skirts so I bought her some thick tights and put her back in a skirt so she's not different from the others. But that's so much more difficult in the bathroom isn't it? Do girls start wearing trousers in winter when it's proper cold??

My DD wears trousers or skirts depending on the weather. We had a little one in with culottes the other day which I haven’t seen in years.

SoSad44 · 27/09/2023 11:37

My DD (Y4) wears trousers 90% of the time. Her choice but I think more comfortable when playing at break times.

Ladyoftheknight · 27/09/2023 11:38

My girls always wear skirts or dresses- at nursery, home or school. They only own 1 pair of jean type trousers each for when we're out on the farm. Thick tights or leggings under skirts, long socks etc keep them warm, they love it!

My DD also has skorts (think we got those at Sainsburys).

DrMarshaFieldstone · 27/09/2023 11:41

Very very unusual to see girls in trousers in my DC's school, and indeed in many secondary schools, with the exception of schools which don't allow skirts at all.

wineandmaltesershappyme · 27/09/2023 11:44

A couple of girls in my daughters class wear trousers but most dresses/skirts/skorts, when it's colder with knee socks/tights

Cakeorchocolate · 27/09/2023 11:48

I never wear skirts or dresses but my dd is the opposite and loves them. So she wears what she wants to - skirts and dresses.
She fell out with tights suddenly 6 months ago (again I can't stand the feel of tights so I completely get that!) but I've always bought her leggings as an option to go with her skirts and dresses too so if she's having a day where tights are annoying her, she uses the leggings.

She's never worn a pair of 'school trousers' though. She wouldn't feel comfortable in them.
There are a couple of girls in her class that do, but the vast majority don't. One other wears leggings under a skirt or dress too.

In dds girls primary school trousers weren't part of the uniform, only skirts. She is in secondary school now (girls private) and though they have the option of trousers I have only ever seen one girl wearing them. It's inexplicable to me as 99% of them wear leggings or jeans outside of school.

Colourfulponderings · 27/09/2023 11:57

My yr1 DD does but I noticed her and only one other do.

SpaceJamtart · 27/09/2023 12:01

I hadn't thought about it before but I don't think there are any girls who wear trousers in my daughters school. My girls all wear skirts or dresses with tights, they choose and prefer them but they have the option of trousers whenever we go uniform shopping.

My eldest two are identical twins and have found even though they have the same taste in clothes and neither like trousers, they prefer for people to be able go tell them apart on sight. So they decided themselves that one will always wears pinafores and the other always wears skirts.
I didn't think people would notice but they told their new teacher thats how to tell them apart and they haven't been mixed up so far.

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 27/09/2023 12:02

My eldest refused to wear trousers in primary school - she thought it would turn her into a boy! With hindsight she laughs a lot about this attitude she had and jokes that younger her would be horrified at what older her wears.

Youngest refused skirts right from the off - hates them so she pretty much matches the boys. Shorts when it's warm, trousers when it's not. It's pretty common in her school to be honest.

TedLasto · 27/09/2023 12:21

Mine refuses to wear trousers or tights or skirts (doesn't like tight waistbands) - so is in pinafores with long socks in winter. She also doesn't ever feel the cold so seems fine. I did used to make her wear tights when she was in reception/ y1 and she managed them fine, apart from the tantrum every morning putting them on. Most other girls in her class are in skirts with tights, though there are 2-3 that wear trousers. In summer mine wears playsuits or dresses. She'll be in those until half term. I am dreading secondary school and trying to get her into uniform there.

WorkCleanRepeat · 27/09/2023 12:31

Lots of girls in my DD's class wear trousers. Although she prefers a skirt/dress and tights during the winter months.

That could possibly be learned behaviour because I wear a skirt/dress and just add tights and boots in the winter. I find it warmer and more comfortable.

AnnieKayTee · 27/09/2023 12:33

My daughter wears trousers and in the summer wears cargo shorts from the boys uniform section with her polo top. She never wears a skirt or pinny. There's also a rule that if hair is above the shoulders it does not need to go in a bobble. So her hair is above the shoulders. 🤣 she is one of the only girls in her class though without a dress or skirt on.

NoNeedToHurry · 27/09/2023 12:35

My daughter would ladder every pair of tights I ever put her in. I could never understand how all the other girls were wearing tights every day! So when it was really cold she wore trousers. At secondary now she just has cold legs (and a really really short skirt 🙄)

Notagains · 27/09/2023 12:37

At my GC school.some girls do and some wear leggings or shorts .

PointeShoesandTutus · 27/09/2023 12:40

I have a DD in infants. I'd love her to have a cute little bob, or even a shoulder length cut. She LOVES her hair, and sobs when we go for a trim. I insist it has to be up in a ponytail or plaits for school. But it's definitely led by her - she'd wander with it flowing freely if she could. I genuinely think she'd rather have a leg off than a pixie cut!

There's only one girl I've noticed in her class with trousers on, but I don't think the girls notice or care. We do pinafore and tights to avoid trouser legs dragging in the puddles on the walk to school, and because to get the right waist size for my skinny Minnie would mean they were half mast!

shockeditellyou · 27/09/2023 12:41

Loads of trouser wearing girls at DCs primary. I have vivid memories of deeply uncomfortable skirts and tights so that has influenced me!

DD also has a skirt which she wears occasionally, but defaults to trousers.

Nomorescreentime · 27/09/2023 12:44

DD wears a pinny, no waistband than to irritate her eczema. We tried a few trousers but they were either polyester mix and no good for her skin, or cotton with fiddly clasps/buttons and not very comfy.

cocksstrideintheevening · 27/09/2023 12:46

None of the girls in DTs class wore trousers in primary, the option was there though. On the odd occasion I drop them to school now they are in secondary there are only a handful of girls in trousers. They are mostly in skirts rolled up to their arese cheeks...It doesnt help that the regulation trousers are a hideous cut and only look good on very few people.

Moveoverdarlin · 27/09/2023 12:49

You have no idea how to do a ponytail? Eh?? My DD has just started reception, on cold days she wears tights and a pinafore dress and her hair is tied back in a plait or ponytail. All exactly the same as when I was at school 30 odd years ago and same as my Mum 60 odd years ago. From start to finish a ponytail with a band, a matching navy bow and hair clip takes maybe 40 seconds, a plait maybe 60 seconds. It really doesn’t take long.

Needmorelego · 27/09/2023 12:50

For a lot of Reception age girls all the school trousers available in the shops are too long for them. When my daughter was that age a lot of the girls wore pinafore dresses - simply because they don't fall down. I have photos of the early days - half the girls look like Victorian school girls because their pinafores were so long (and actually looked quite adorable 😂).
By Year 1 or 2 many wore trousers. By Year 6 practically all of them did.

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 27/09/2023 12:51

Most of the (reception) girls I teach wear trousers or jogging bottoms. Much more practical!

I'm with you on the hair. I look at some of these incredibly complex hairdos and think 'what time do you actually get UP?!'

DinnaeFashYersel · 27/09/2023 12:55

My DD has only worn trousers or shorts since P2. She hates dresses and skirts and says she can't play in them properly.

In P2 and P3 it was usually just her but now in P7 half of the girls wear trousers.

It probably depends when girls assert their choices over what their parents chose for them to wear.

inappropriateraspberry · 27/09/2023 12:56

My daughter wears skirts, dresses and trousers. Depends on the weather and how she's feeling.
Quite a few of the girls wear trousers, more so the older ones I think.
