Do primary school girls not wear trousers?

DD just started reception, she wore a skirt the first couple of weeks when it was hot. Last week it was raining so I put her in trousers. All the boys are in trousers now rather than shorts but every girl in her year that I've seen is still in a skirt. This morning I was looking around on the way in and out of school and I didn't see a single girl in trousers. I'm just thinking aren't their legs cold? I remembered when I was in infant school a couple of times when I was the only one in trousers and I remember feeling really embarrassed about that, and my DD loves skirts so I bought her some thick tights and put her back in a skirt so she's not different from the others. But that's so much more difficult in the bathroom isn't it? Do girls start wearing trousers in winter when it's proper cold??

Mine does some days but she's the only one

She hates tights: especially on PE days and they have to change

For a lot of Reception age girls all the school trousers available in the shops are too long for them. When my daughter was that age a lot of the girls wore pinafore dresses - simply because they don't fall down. I have photos of the early days - half the girls look like Victorian school girls because their pinafores were so long (and actually looked quite adorable 😂).
By Year 1 or 2 many wore trousers. By Year 6 practically all of them did.

Does no one know how to take trousers up these days?! They're too long for the boys too, ten minutes with needle and thread and you're done.

Girls at DC school tend to wear pinafores or trousers, roughly 50/50 I'd say. With some joggers and shorts thrown in. A couple of boys wear dresses too, when they fancy.

DD does skirt and tights in the winter, socks in the summer. Its her preference but I am glad because the thought of finding trousers long enough for her legs and small enough in the waist fills me with dread. She also wears hair up every day to protect against headlice, it takes me all of 30 seconds to do a ponytail.

DD wore skirts/pinafores until about year 4, and now much prefers trousers or shorts in the summer. There are definitely more at older primary age in trousers at her school. Hair is similar - she still has long hair but shorter hair is more common in older than younger girls at her school.

Needmorelego · 27/09/2023 13:06

@fearfuloffluff actually I tried that. I would have had to do turn ups of about 6 inches and it made the trouser legs bulky and an odd shape (I could have cut them I suppose).

Sunrise33 · 27/09/2023 13:16

We’ve been doing skirts and pinafores as we can’t find any trousers to fit, they are all too large. I’m sure if I spent more time on it I could find some, or alter the waistbands and take up the hems, but I have better things to do with my time.

EyesOnThePies · 27/09/2023 13:20

My Dc school had no uniform and most of the girls wore trousers or jeans.

caerdydd12 · 27/09/2023 13:23

My daughter prefers trousers now but when she was younger it was tough to find one small enough on the waist but long enough in the leg so pinafores and tights were what we went with.

shockeditellyou · 27/09/2023 13:27

The M&S trousers all have adjustable waistbands that take inches off. Never had a problem getting waist/length right.

AegonT · 27/09/2023 15:24

They do in my daughter's school. She wears both. We definitely stick to trousers on winter PE days as no tights to deal with when changing. My daughter was probably the only girl in shorts or trousers in her reception class but she didn't care. More girls seemed to wear then as they got into the older years - no idea why!

The adjusters make the waist very bulky beyond a certain point. DD objected to this on comfort grounds and I don't blame her.

Fine for minor adjustments but beyond a couple of inches doesn't work well.

Mumofmarauders · 27/09/2023 18:20

My year four daughter wears shorts or trousers every day and has done since year 1 when she began to have very strong views... Most of the girls wear dresses or skirts but there's a sizeable minority in trousers.

I think you are over thinking this. I have a boy who has just gone into secondary school and this is the first time he was worn trousers to school. From age 4-11 he was only allowed shorts and he was quite happy I have pictures of him going in and making igloos in the snow still in his shorts and has found being in trousers quite bazaar. I am not sure how a thin bit of material round the bottom section of their legs make them so much warmer. Let her wear what she is comfiest in if you get a choice.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/09/2023 06:57

DD wore shorts or trousers all through primary. She had dresses and skirts, never wore them. She hasn't worn a dress/skirt since she was about 2.

Kwasi · 28/09/2023 07:12

DS has just gone into year one. There are only 10 girls in his class and all bar one wear trousers in winter; the one wears skirts without tights all winter. There’s also a boy in his class who wears shorts all year round. It’s a village school and most kids walk, so that could be why most girls wear trousers.

On a side note, we didn’t have uniform in primary school (early 80s) but we did in middle school and girls weren’t allowed to wear trousers unless it was snowing. Harsh!

Abbyant · 28/09/2023 07:12

In reception my dd has the choice of the full uniform ( skirt, shirt, tie, cardigan) or jogging bottoms, polo and jumper. So in the winter she could switch to wearing the joggers.

jasminocereusbritannicus · 28/09/2023 07:13

Talking from a TA point of view, I would say trousers are much easier to wear, in cold weather , than tights. It depends how easily and quickly they can can put them back on after PE. It can take a long time to get ,say,10 children’s tights back on!

As for hair, I don’t know how these girls have such elaborate hair-dos!! My own daughter , 17 years ago, had hair down to the back of her knees (when brushed out) , but I only ever did one thick pony-tail plait….didn’t have time for anything else!!!

What bothers me more is the current trend to dye young children’s hair - either ‘natural’ colours or bright - this is totally baffling to me. Why would you do this to a young child?

I can sort of understand the more mature Year 6’s wanting to be a bit different, ( though most won’t be allowed at secondary school) but 5, 6, 7 (+) year olds?

But there you are… I’ve never dyed my hair, or had tattoos or piercings other than earrings, because I don’t get why people want to do that to themselves. My daughter , however, ( now an adult and a teacher), has all these things and I still don’t understand, but I just nod and say it looks very nice….

Heyhoherewegoagain · 28/09/2023 07:13

i think it was about 50/50 when dd was at primary but she preferred a pinafore and tights up until p7-she didn’t like her shirt constantly coming out of her skirt and preferred the extra cosines from having the extra layer of a pinafore.. She reluctantly wore a skirt in P7 as she’d outgrown her pinafore and I couldn’t get a bigger size. She then went to secondary and wore a skirt which resembled a belt for 6 years 😂

NerrSnerr · 28/09/2023 07:16

My daughter has always worn a pinafore (she's now in year 5). It's easier to find dresses to fit her as she has no bum and school trousers are hard to find ones that fit and are comfortable.

I have a year 2 boy and bloody wish I could send him in a dress- school trousers are so bloody massive that age 3-4 on the tightest setting just about fit but are getting short.

We don't have this issue with leggings/ joggers, just school trousers.

Dragonsandcats · 28/09/2023 07:18

Our primary school didn’t allow trousers for girls , and I would have said 90% at least had long hair.

An age 3-4 will be fine on average sized just turned four year olds, they have room to grow but the shoes keep the bottoms of the trousers up, and I think m&s do a 2-3.

liveforsummer · 28/09/2023 07:19

Dd1 wore tailored shorts with bare legs for her whole 7 years of primary. She hated skirts and tights. Dd2 wears leggings. I don't think they noticed/notice what others were wearing. Most of them especially in earlier years wore summer dresses or pinafores

ImpeckableChicken · 28/09/2023 07:20

My girl’s just started Y1 and has never worn a skirt or a dress to school, she hates them 😄 I even had to buy her some boy shorts for the summer. She’s the only one.

But from middle school onwards I was the same. No shorts though cus I hated my legs!!

mugboat · 28/09/2023 07:20

It's so weird isn't it? I've bought trousers for my girls to wear (I've got 3 girls) and they haven't wanted to wear them, even in cold weather.
My eldest said it's bc your shirt has to be tucked in at all times. My twins say "they're for boys" 🙄
Maybe if other girls wore them, they would too.
Very odd tho.

kezzyleah · 28/09/2023 07:22

My dd prefers dresses and long socks even when it's really cold. Quite a few girls do wear trousers though. I think it depends on what the rest of the class do - girls seem to want to follow the pack a bit more so do what all their friends do.
