Do primary school girls not wear trousers?

DD just started reception, she wore a skirt the first couple of weeks when it was hot. Last week it was raining so I put her in trousers. All the boys are in trousers now rather than shorts but every girl in her year that I've seen is still in a skirt. This morning I was looking around on the way in and out of school and I didn't see a single girl in trousers. I'm just thinking aren't their legs cold? I remembered when I was in infant school a couple of times when I was the only one in trousers and I remember feeling really embarrassed about that, and my DD loves skirts so I bought her some thick tights and put her back in a skirt so she's not different from the others. But that's so much more difficult in the bathroom isn't it? Do girls start wearing trousers in winter when it's proper cold??

DD is 5 and hates trousers. I can get her into a pair of leggings at weekends but only under a skirt or dress. Insists on long hair too. When she was still young enough to not have an opinion I kept it in a short bob with a fringe. Looked lovely and was practical.

Dresses for school are far easier as far as fitting goes. DS is 7, I've just moved him into age 5-6 trousers on the tightest pull in orlf the waistband and the length is just about ok. Avoiding all that faff with fitting by giving her a jersey pinafore she just pulls over he head is much easier.

I always felt skirts or dresses were more convenient for changing. DD preferred them as she could maintain some modesty when in a big group changing for PE.

In secondary we have found the trousers that are allowed (tailored, straight leg at DD’s school) are styled for one body type, and by that age there are many. DD is tall and slim so the ones that fit on the waist are flapping round her ankles. Her mate is shorter and has developed curves and can’t get them over her thighs at the correct length. So they mostly wear skirts.

And what nonsense about not knowing how to do a ponytail so cutting the kids hair in a bob. When DD had a bob it was far harder than tying her hair back or plaiting it - she has wavy hair and it was all over the place. Very messy.

Have to say we find it hard to get trousers to fit. Rounder girls need bigger sizes ending up too long. Skinny girls need slimmer waists meaning too short. I never liked the jersey ones as they went bobbly fairly quickly. Could probably get more wear out of a skirt. My DD has continence issues so skirts were easier.

Shorts, skorts or jersey pull on trousers here

vickylou78 · 28/09/2023 07:42

I our primary most of the younger girls where pinafores all year round but with tights in winter. But girls in older years are often in trousers, but still lots of skirts and tights.

DS has just gone into year one. There are only 10 girls in his class and all bar one wear trousers in winter; the one wears skirts without tights all winter. There’s also a boy in his class who wears shorts all year round. It’s a village school and most kids walk, so that could be why most girls wear trousers.

On a side note, we didn’t have uniform in primary school (early 80s) but we did in middle school and girls weren’t allowed to wear trousers unless it was snowing. Harsh!

We weren’t allowed trousers in middle school at all!! First school was optional with a few kids in uniform and most not. By high school there has been a petition about trousers but it meant the optional ties for girls became compulsory when they allowed trousers. Now there’s been an issue in the summer as the boys aren’t allowed shorts at the high school and some turned up in skirts one day to protest!!

Skirts with short socks in summer and skirts with long socks in winter and then grey or black cycling shorts underneath to keep warm

gemma19846 · 28/09/2023 07:46

Yes they wear trousers but its still quite warm. Maybe tights weather and trousers when its colder

itsgettingweird · 28/09/2023 07:49

About 50/50 here.

Those in skirts wear long socks or tights with skirts when it gets colder.

I think this time of year people really differ in how the cold affects them. I don't get cold let's so I'm in dresses and jumpers for work still. Plenty of colleges are already in jeggings and boots!

After October half term you often see more children in trousers or covered legs.

GlitteryGreen · 28/09/2023 07:53

Omg I commented on this to my mum just today!

It's so funny how times change, when I was at school all girls wanted to wear trousers but now I barely ever see one not in a skirt. Especially at secondary.

PatsWoggle · 28/09/2023 07:55

Lots wear leggings at our primary. The nursery class insist on leggings or joggers so I suppose they get used to it.

MrsB74 · 28/09/2023 08:14

Neither of mine would wear trousers at primary - I let them decide and they always chose pinafores and then skirts (with tights in winter). There was a brief tailored shorts and tights phase too. Some did wear trousers, but I would say more wore skirts. Now they are in secondary they wouldn’t be seen dead in a skirt, so it’s trousers every day! I think it’s one of those things you have to let them decide on (within reason).

elsieandthepooch · 28/09/2023 08:31

There are two girls in DD's class (Y1) who wear trousers. DD wears pinafore dresses and tights. I personally prefer the pinafores as it helps protect her blouses from coming home with black pen marks!

Northernladdette · 28/09/2023 08:31

Probably a bit early for trousers. Being a mum of boys I, and others, left it as late as possible as within days the knees were often hanging out due to falling over 🙂

Oliv71452 · 28/09/2023 09:05

My 8yo wears pinafores and tights then wears the gingham dresses in the summer. I've never really questioned why I do this, it's just by far the best options when shopping. The trousers seem so much more expensive and hard to find a good fit when she's quite tall

SomePosters · 28/09/2023 09:06

No one single skirt in dds class.

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/09/2023 09:08

They definitely did, from Reception, at the school where I worked.

hot2trotter · 28/09/2023 09:29

My eldest daughter has worn trousers for school since day one, she's year 4 now. Every summer its a battle to get her to wear the gingham playsuits (shorts, not full length) to keep her a bit cooler. She would absolutely not ever wear the gingham dresses or any kind of pinafore. She is more of a tomboy though, doesn't wear dresses/skirts outside of school either.
My younger daughter (year 1) has just kind of followed her sister. She is more feminine in general and does love a pretty dress for a party or on holiday (examples) but would rather wear trousers for school for comfort. She does like the short playsuit in summer though - once she remembers how to unfasten and manoeuvre it so she can use the toilet (she seems to forget every year and has to be reminded that she can do it).

Forgot to add. I'd say in their school 80% of girls wear skirts/dresses for school, and 20% trousers. But why should it matter? Every child is different.

notforonesecond · 28/09/2023 09:45

I tried to get my DD to think about wearing some trousers last winter when she was in Y2 and she was having none of it. Her best mate has just started wearing some this year which I thought might make her want to switch but it’s still a no. She’s a pinafore and tights girl for now.

Seeing as it’s her preference, I let her get on with it.

You’re right though, there’s a distinct lack of trousers on little girls at our school. I think mine is at the age now where she’s really starting to notice that girls and boys are different and wants to be super girly. None of this has come from me, mind you. She’s her own person so I’ll just let it play out and roll my eyes at the sequin skirt down the park.

Let’s hope by the time she’s a teenager those gym knicker shorts are well out of fashion though 🤣

Fallingthroughclouds · 28/09/2023 09:49

Skirts and legging or thermal tights is a good compromise. No more difficult to go to the loo. Probably easier with buttons and zips.

MorvernBlack · 28/09/2023 09:53

DD wore mainly trousers in winter, the older girls seemed to stick with skirts. Them she went to a non uniform school for the last years of primary and everyone dressed practically for the weather, there were virtually no skirts (or daft mary jane type shoes) in winter.
Secondary is mainly skirts and as you have noticed, the long hair. It bemuses me that virtually every girl has long hair in a similiar style.

septemberoctobernovember · 28/09/2023 09:56

well they're not going to get cold legs at the moment as it's still nearly 20 degrees

Mugaloaf · 28/09/2023 09:59

My daughter wears trousers when it's really cold, but most of her girl friends don't.

She's at secondary now...I don't think was particularly keen in Reception/yr 1, but she liked wearing them after that.

SomeFiggyPudding · 28/09/2023 10:02

I work in a school - girls in all the years wear trousers (my own daughter included). Usually more in winter time.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 28/09/2023 10:03

DD prefers the pinafores “because the zip has a shape on it”, the summer dresses “because they have flower buttons and pockets”, but not trousers, shorts or the skirts – I think because the waistbands are uncomfortable. She’s always worn skirt or dress and tights to nursery since she was old enough to choose so has no issue with them for loo trips; I think she’d struggle with proper trousers. She wears shorts/joggers on PE kit day. Hair she brushes herself then a ponytail/plait/bunches takes 30 seconds.

I used to wear a tights/dress “uniform” daily but none of my dresses have breastfeeding access so currently I do jeans, T-shirt to yank up + cardigan/sweatshirt, but I equally find the waistband uncomfortable! Viva dresses!
