Husband wants to get rid of cats due to newborn baby

Hi all

My husband has suddenly changed his attitude / behaviour towards our cats and now wants to get rid of them after the arrival of our baby.

Has anyone been in this situation?

He is now blaming me that I was the one who wanted cats but we were both wanting them prior pregnancy. I am absolutely heartbroken if I have to be forced into agreement in giving them up.

You'll have everyone saying its not true as they haven't personally experienced it themselves.

Why has a link to a thread about a child being killed by a dog been put on a thread about a cat?

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about these subjects:

You don't have to be forced into anything, you are not a small child who has to do what she is told, you are a women who does what she wants, not what she is told.
Just keep the house extra clean ( tell your husband that can be a job for him to stop him worrying) and don't leave cats alone with baby. X

I haven't read the whole thread but have grown up with cats and my family has had cats and many kids for generations. We've all survived and never been endangered by a malicious moggy.

So OP - I think it would be wrong to turf out your cats over this. Some of the replies are off the bizarre, frankly.

We have six cats and were worried about how they would react to our newborn. They couldn’t be less bothered with her if they tried! Maybe try revoking your husband instead…

I personally wouldn't have one around a baby due to a scary experience a close friend. Her cat nearly suffocated her baby

Lol sure it did 😆

MintyFreshOne · 01/02/2023 05:04

Dogs can kill full-grown adults but that’s not relevant here

KatherineJaneway · 01/02/2023 06:39

Some of the replies to this thread are batshit. Seriously.

FurAndFeathers · 01/02/2023 06:52

Just more irrelevant GF?
honestly what is your (misinformed) point?

Vaselining · 01/02/2023 13:52

My point is that animals, even domesticated ones, are unpredictable. And actually cats far more than dogs, as cats are never really tame and domesticated.

As any cat owner knows, even a good cat will sometimes attack. So why so many posters so readily dismiss the OP's husband's concerns is beyond me.

It's a moot point that some of you have had cats and children with no problems. There is a father to be of a child who does mind and is not OK with having a cat around his child, and his concerns should not be ignored.

As said, you can rehome the cat very easily and the cat would not care at all. Cats don't have complex feelings, they don't suffer emotional pain due to rejection, and frankly those suggesting OP gets rid of her husband in favour of a cat are bizarre at best.

So your ‘evidence’ for cats being undomesticated is a link to an article about a dog attack.

I’m starting to se why you struggled with some of the logical arguments presented earlier.

you also clearly didn’t bother to read any of the actual research posted on this thread. Easier just to keep repeating your false narrative I suppose eh @Vaselining ?

takealettermsjones · 01/02/2023 18:33

@Vaselining

Cats [are] far more [unpredictable] than dogs, as cats are never really tame and domesticated

How so? Do you have sources for that?

As every cat owner knows, even a good cat will sometimes attack

Well for one thing I've owned 6 of them and none has ever attacked. But the point is that it's easy to manage them so they can't possibly attack a baby. They can't kick their way through a solid door.

Cats don't have complex feelings, they don't suffer emotional pain due to rejection

This is blatantly false based on lots of easily accessible research. Cats can feel fear, anxiety, abandonment, stress, depression, etc. They can and do form bonds with humans.
