Did anyone here NOT use a baby monitor?

We haven't bought one, baby will be moving in to their own room soon.

We live in a bungalow so baby is never far away, and in fact she naps in her crib in our bedroom for most naps anyway, so just really never occurred to me.

Are there people who just never used one?

Of course, these baby monitors have not been around that long. It’s doubtful your parents used them. Or your grandparents.

RandomMess · 26/02/2022 19:44

Our house was tiny with thin doors - never needed one. Always woke up just fine even with the doors shut!

merryhouse · 26/02/2022 19:45

I didn't have one - but we slept in the same room till toddlerhood.

My only real problem was when visiting my dad - big house with brick internal walls meant I couldn't hear from downstairs!

We had one for DD1, the type with the mat that you put under their sheets to detect when they stopped breathing. Stopped using it fairly quickly as I'd forget to switch it off when I picked her up for night feeds and the alarm kept going off.

Didn't use one for DD2 as we live in a flat so could hear her easily if she cried.

CMOTDibbler · 26/02/2022 19:47

Never had one. I could hear ds from anywhere in the house quite well

Favourodds · 26/02/2022 19:50

I have an 18-month old, and have never had one. She was in with us for 9 months. Now she's on the top floor of an old 3 story house and it's no bother. Just never really felt the need.

Etherealhedgehog · 26/02/2022 19:50

My parents did have one in the 80s so they've been around a while! But yeah, probably not a necessity. We live in a one bed flat so can always hear her crying (obviously we don't use it overnight but useful for naps and bedtime). We have a video one and the thing I find it really useful for is seeing the difference between crying but lying down and gonna get herself (back) to sleep, versus standing up and intervention probably needed. Though on holiday in a house with thick walls we learned that an audio only one has much better range

DockOTheBay · 26/02/2022 19:56

We didn't have one at home, we live in a small house and we can hear them crying from the living room and from our bedroom. We did have one for travel as a few times we stayed with relatives or in holiday homes where the bedrooms were further apart.

greenbirdsong · 26/02/2022 19:58

I didn't have one.
Like you, live in a bungalow and could easily hear baby.
If I lived in a big house then maybe I would have got one to make sure I heard baby but it was never an issue here.

Ragwort · 26/02/2022 19:59

No, we did buy one but it seemed so complicated to set up that we didn't bother! Unless you live in a mansion I don't see the point ...

DrMarple · 26/02/2022 20:03

I used a video app on my phone with the sound turned off. I could hear them but found it really useful to be able to check if they were lying down and likely to go back to sleep or definitely awake.

Alpacaface · 26/02/2022 20:04

Our first baby was born in October. We didn't use one at first but then got one when summer came and we wanted to be in the garden when she was sleeping.

daisypond · 26/02/2022 20:05

We never had one. My DC are in their early 20s now.

JellybabyGina87 · 26/02/2022 20:05

I've never used them with any of my kids. They've always slept in my room until they were over 12 months. If I sat downstairs they would sleep in their Moses basket and when I started putting them upstairs I would just frequently check them. I lived in a small house so I would hear them if they cried.

CraftyGin · 26/02/2022 20:06

Never used one with our five children.

BabyTurtIe · 26/02/2022 20:06

Never did and have 4 kids and never used baby gates either

bigyellowTpot · 26/02/2022 20:13

I never used one with either of mine I've got a teen and a 9 year old. they were both in their own rooms by 4 months old. could always hear them if they cried but to be honest I had 2 good sleepers.

Kylereese · 26/02/2022 20:19

No, never had one. I put her in her own room at 3 weeks as we were waking each other up and everytime I heard a noise or a snuggle I woke straight up. Seemed pointless to them put a monitor next to my ear to hear the snuffling and noises. I could hear her if she cried.

Yellowleadbetter · 26/02/2022 20:20

No, never had one on account of my child just never EVER EVER sleeping.
I kind of knew he was breathing from the constant, none stop, hour after hour after hour of s reaming and no sleep.
Plus I spent every single night on the bedroom floor next to the cot trying to get him to sleep.

Worldwide2 · 26/02/2022 20:21

Never had one but my place is small and you can hear everything so just didnt need one. When we stayed with the in laws we used a video one as there house is huge and it would be impossible to hear the baby from downstairs

SamuraiPizzaCats · 26/02/2022 20:21

Ah great! Thanks everyone! Couldn't tell if I was being dense and there was something I hadn't considered.

Good idea to think about what we might do if we were staying at someone else's house though.

I also think it's something I would consider once they can stand up in their cot.

Thank you all!

We didn't, but house wasn't that big.

lljkk · 26/02/2022 20:23

no... and I have a big house.

I can't explain well... I just didn't want to rely on it or be tied to it.

October2020 · 26/02/2022 20:23

Alternative viewpoint, we adore our video monitor. We can hear her from anywhere in the house but I love being able to see her and knowing her state of wakefulness etc

MyGiddyAunt1 · 26/02/2022 20:25

We didn’t use
A baby monitor
A diaper genie (or what ever they are called)
A pram/buggy
Stair gates
and when the time came those guard wheels on her first bike
