Did anyone here NOT use a baby monitor?

We haven't bought one, baby will be moving in to their own room soon.

We live in a bungalow so baby is never far away, and in fact she naps in her crib in our bedroom for most naps anyway, so just really never occurred to me.

Are there people who just never used one?

We have a reasonable sized house, and started out without, then moved on to a handed down audio monitor. When that broke we finally have in and got a video monitor. I found the audio monitor helped me relax more, you don't have to keep half an ear out while watching TV in case they start whimpering. We also found the video monitor more helpful as it's a lot easier to tell whether or not to go in or to leave them to try and settle if you can see what they are doing. They are also useful to have on holiday until they are quite a lot older, because my DC at least are always unsettled the first few nights somewhere new.

Troublesometooth · 26/02/2022 20:27

We never had a baby monitor of any sort.

we never had one. but lived in a tiny flat until youngest was 3. and until a year or so old babies were in our bedroom.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 26/02/2022 20:31

We have ours permanently set up downstairs because we can’t hear DD2. We don’t use it at night though because our rooms are so close.

DD1 though, the house we were in was too big and spread out so had to use it. We couldn’t hear her otherwise.

GotheFtobed · 26/02/2022 20:31

We have one but rarely used it at home. Useful when visiting relatives, even for older kids, to check they’re actually in bed and haven’t snuck out for a bedtime adventure!

Itsnotover · 26/02/2022 20:31

No I never used them.

OppsUpsSide · 26/02/2022 20:33

No never used one, youngest is 6

ElliotGoss · 26/02/2022 20:47

Lived in a tiny house with DD so didn't need one. Have a video one for DS but he isn't here yet so don't know how good it will be.

Lulu1919 · 26/02/2022 20:47

We had basic one ...28 years ago for our eldest ....didn't use it much for the second !!!
They were in a Moses basket in our room for about 6 weeks then own room....as was the norm back then .

SardineJam · 26/02/2022 20:57

We didn't, we also didn't have a stairgate or a changing table, DSs are 12 and 10 and are absolutely okay 👍

Daisycrown · 26/02/2022 21:02

Nope not for any of them, not even my plb 😂.

Benjaminbunnyslettuce · 26/02/2022 21:04

Never had one for either of mine. It wasn’t a big house and trust me we could hear them if they cried!

WindyKnickers · 26/02/2022 21:06

I did with my first. She was a terrible sleeper and used to wake up all through the night and never nap unless in the car or pram. My mum thinks she was like this because we used a baby monitor, we were too responsive and didn't allow her to self soothe?? My second baby just slept through the night really early on. We used a monitor to start with but when he was about 10 weeks old we stopped because it was pointless, he never woke up before 7am. His day time naps were were a solid 3 hours as well.

Change123today · 26/02/2022 21:07

We had one but only really used it when outside in the garden as I couldn’t really hear if they woke up from naps. We used it a lot when we got a puppy!

Liveandkicking · 26/02/2022 21:09

We didn’t. I had post natal anxiety and I felt it would be unhelpful to me. If they cried I always heard but I didn’t think staring at the video/lights/listening to them breathing was very conducive to good mental health and probably wasn’t going to actually make my baby/child safer.

AliasGrape · 26/02/2022 21:09

We bought a ridiculously expensive one for all those times she'd be napping in her cot or moses basket and I just wanted to run to the loo or whatever, then later for when she went into her own room at 6 months. As it happens, none of those things happened and she still contact naps and sleeps in our room at 18 months. Plus our house is tiny and I can hear her turn over in her cot from downstairs so we really didn't need the monitor after all. I keep meaning to sell it actually, must get round to it.

mynameiscalypso · 26/02/2022 21:09

We have one but we have the volume off as we live in a flat so can always hear DS. I mainly have the video element so I can tell if I need to get up / trying to escape or if he's just making noise. It's mainly because I'm lazy and don't want to get out of bed unless I have to. DS is quite a noisy sleeper but it doesn't necessarily mean he's awake.

110APiccadilly · 26/02/2022 21:10

We don't and she's 15 months now. The house is small and doesn't have much soundproofing. If DD cries, we'll hear her anywhere in the house. We don't necessarily hear quieter noises, for instance if she's talking to herself while falling asleep, but I'm not sure why we'd need to!

Discwriter · 26/02/2022 21:13

Were given one as a handmedown with DC1, not used it for either DCs (5 and 3 now)- given it away to a friend. We live in a bungalow and can hear each room from wherever so never needed it.

Thistledew · 26/02/2022 21:18

I most frequently use mine when DD falls asleep in the car on the way home and I want her to have a nap. We are fortunate to have a drive to park on so I plug the monitor into a rechargeable power bank and leave her to snooze in the car for as long as she likes.

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 26/02/2022 21:28

We have one but then sometimes we are downstairs when baby is napping.
There have been a few times where I've checked the monitor to see if we need to get up so that's handy.
There have also been times where baby has been stuck in cot bars/in compromised position so it's been good for that.
Also ours says the temp of the room and is quite accurate so really useful.
Overall I would recommend one as it's good for keeping an eye and peace of mind, but that's my opinion.

Nannewnannew · 26/02/2022 21:33

Never had one with any of my three babies, definitely could hear them anywhere in the house! In fact I can hear my neighbours toddler crying for 2 hours every night at 2am, so I assume they don’t need one either! 🥱

Pallisers · 26/02/2022 21:37

Never used them. We were in a small house though. Dh found my nephew yelling into the baby monitor once like it was a microphone for his personal use :)

Peasandcabbage · 26/02/2022 21:42

@MyGiddyAunt1 ?? Are you trying to be goady.

Pram, OK, great you carried everywhere.

Stair gates, well done you had 24.7 vision

Stabilisers....?

Maybe you are not. But come on.

I use a baby monitor when I'm in the kitchen and baby is down early evening, after that it stays in kitchen and I can hear her OP.

Toddler I have stair gates, etc.
