Did anyone here NOT use a baby monitor?

We haven't bought one, baby will be moving in to their own room soon.

We live in a bungalow so baby is never far away, and in fact she naps in her crib in our bedroom for most naps anyway, so just really never occurred to me.

Are there people who just never used one?

Like all of my friends we managed to bring up children without baby monitors.

MunchyMonsters · 26/02/2022 21:51

Nope, never had one. I don't really get the point unless you are in a different 'wing' to your child.

IForgiveYouPaula · 26/02/2022 21:54

Bought one, never took it out of the box, could hear DC crying in the next room at night and also when DC were upstairs and we were downstairs. Took it back and got it refunded.

No, I sleep in with my kid.

Svara · 26/02/2022 21:59

Never used one. DS napped in the sling then when he napped on the bed he'd crawl to the edge and scream, later when he learnt to get off the bed he'd come crawling out of the room screaming. Never needed a monitor!

Svara · 26/02/2022 22:00

We coslept at night

LittleMissA · 26/02/2022 22:03

We didn't have one, we were in a flat, left our bedroom door open and DDs at night so we'd easily hear if she woke.

Hercisback · 26/02/2022 22:03

We didn't in a one bed flat. We did have a noise only one for holidays.

Hercisback · 26/02/2022 22:05

I also didn't use stairgates, I don't think that's a rarity. Depends on the layout of your house and how you parent. We could shut them in rooms using doors if needed and now at 2+ they are confident up and down stairs.

Can't fathom life without a pram though! I had a sling but they get so heavy.

MyGiddyAunt1 · 26/02/2022 22:08

@Peasandcabbage with due respect this is partly the problem with the world- every one has to follow the same rule else your labelled - one if them being goady- no I’m not trying to be anything just giving a different take should the OP need it- to answer your query:

Yes we (husband and I) carried her in carriers - reason it got me moving as the baby slept with the gentle motion and made me get out of the house and get some excercise without succumbing to PND- we also found that she slept for long periods without disruption due to the rocking motion snd potentially the heart Rhythm that she got into a sleeping pattern pretty quickly.

Stair gate: we have family in different countries and I was lucky to see people who had every paraphernalia and others with none- both sets were doing a great job. We didn’t fly a flag in our back yard and solemnly declare never to buy a stair gate - we checked the shops snd chose one but decided to see how it goes first- but we managed without one and not sure if this is connected or not but she was confident with stairs pretty quickly

Stabilisers! That’s the word- when getting my daughter her first bike we asked around a few keen cyclists for recommendations- almost all of them suggested against stabilisers so she gets the confidence and balance pretty quickly- again we decided to merge some exercise into it- when she was younger and slower I would run along side her so I’m support her - when she was a bit older and faster for me my husband took over and she was able to cycle pretty well soon after

I’m not saying everyone do as I did all I’m doing is giving an alternative view.

WigglesWaggles · 26/02/2022 22:10

I never used one with either of my children (3&10) don't live in a big enough house where I can't hear them for one and they were always near me. I did buy them though, both times. Just never got used.

Favourodds · 26/02/2022 22:54

I don't think anyone's being goady, are they?

I don't have stair gates or a baby monitor. I don't think I'm a better parent than someone who does have them. It's not personal.

MyGiddyAunt1 · 26/02/2022 23:07

@Favourodds exactly! We are all just trying to help OP with our different methods- there’s no manual for parenting!!!

Pallisers · 26/02/2022 23:45

Can't understand the "are you being goady" response to MyGiddtAunt1 either.

We rear our children as best we can. My friends have done different things to me - that worked for them what we do worked for us. I did try to learn if I could from others. In real life and on line.

Flingingmelon · 27/02/2022 00:04

We had a massively complicated one that was rendered useless when we moved with 2mo DS. By the time we got wifi up and running we'd got used to living without

SamuraiPizzaCats · 27/02/2022 06:49

@Liveandkicking

We didn’t. I had post natal anxiety and I felt it would be unhelpful to me. If they cried I always heard but I didn’t think staring at the video/lights/listening to them breathing was very conducive to good mental health and probably wasn’t going to actually make my baby/child safer.
I can sympathise with this! I don't have PND but I can be a bit anxious and know that I have to make sure not to give myself things to worry about and I think a monitor might feed in to that.

Thanks to everyone that has replied I feel much reassured about not having a monitor.

We haven't got any stairs so no need to worry about stair gates - thank god because I can NEVER undo them!

We have never used one for any of our kids. My hearing is perfectly fine Smile

miltonj · 27/02/2022 07:49

We had one when we lived in a house but now we're in a flat so not needed at all.

But we visit people a lot/stay away in other places so it's needed for those times. But we don't bother with the one with the screen anymore, just the audio is all you need.

TolkiensFallow · 27/02/2022 07:51

We didn’t use one. Lived in a small ground floor bungalow. Baby was with us until 6 months. After that they were so close it seemed pointless.

Lesserspottedmama · 27/02/2022 07:53

I have four DC and didn’t use a baby monitor with the last one as I read a lot about how high in EMFs they are which is not good for a developing young brain - wish I’d known with the others.

Seafog · 27/02/2022 07:55

We had one, for a few weeks, with our first, 25 years ago.
We ending up picking up a lot of portable phone conversations, so got rid of it soon after.
I did not like hearing random people speaking into the nursery like that!

HelenaJustina · 27/02/2022 07:59

Never had one. 4DC aged 8-14yrs now. My babies slept in with us until at least 12 months, and I could always hear them.

Justgettingbye · 27/02/2022 08:02

Agree with the PP that said hearing every sniffle was not helpful. I got given one used it a couple of times and found it was more hassle than it's worth

Peasandcabbage · 27/02/2022 08:03

@MyGiddyAunt1 apologies, I have misunderstood your post and intention, I'm sorry.

With post natal anxiety and a very isolated rural life I am labeled constantly with every thing I do criticised. So I do not with to be part of that problem for sure.

cinnamonswirll · 27/02/2022 08:08

Used one with pfb, lived in a house with a door on living room and kitchen then dc was upstairs, down a short hallway behind another door. Also had a breathing sensor pad!

With dc2 lived in an open plan house, dc was right at top of stairs and didn’t feel the need so never used it. Depends on the layout of your house. With a bungalow or flat I don’t think I’d bother.
