Going out in pyjamas

I often do the school run or pop to the local shop in the evening in my pyjamas. And I wouldn’t be ashamed to turn up to a friends or families house without putting on proper clothes. I’ve always been more interested in being comfortable than looking my best. I work from home so even if I do get dressed I come back and put pjs back on. Is it just me? Do you judge people who step out in pj bottoms with trainers?

I couldn’t leave the house in the morning without having a bath or shower, I would feel really grim. And once I’m clean, I put clean clothes on, obviously.

As for after work, I might possibly put joggers on instead of work trousers, but my pyjamas are for bed. I’d hate to cook or eat dinner in nightwear and then go to bed in it. I also wear an underwire bra all day, and switch to a sleep bra at night, I would want to go out in the night one, or sleep in the wired one.

I wfh and have primary school age children but still get up showered and dressed. Only in jeans and a comfy top/ hoodie. I couldn't get my head in the right place if I was parading around in my jammies 😂

Maireas · 13/02/2022 13:01

You wear what you chose, you're an adult. But you must know that clothes reflect how you feel about yourself and your situation. If I see someone out in pyjamas I would think they're maybe ill or depressed or possibly lazy. Even just comfortable joggers and a sweatshirt looks like you're dressed, and therefore up and about? Surely just as comfortable?

I would judge you. Can't even lie about it.
It's lazy. Nothing worse then seeing a person on the school run or in a shop in pjs.

Suprima · 13/02/2022 13:01

@Jolie12345

But what about those of us that don’t care what we look like. It’s not my top priority, comfort it. I struggle to see the difference between pyjama bottoms and patterned trousers?
There are plenty of ways to be comfortable in something that isn’t pyjamas. Lots of soft stretchy joggers in shops now. Maternity yoga pants may work too to accommodate for the bloating.

I know you say you don’t care what you look like- but it’s not about looking trendy or groomed, someone out of the house in pyjamas never looks ‘well’. People will assume you are depressed or ill or not coping- not that you look a bit frumpy.

Pavlova31 · 13/02/2022 13:02

Agreed

GrazingSheep · 13/02/2022 13:02

Are your child embarrassed by you doing the school run in your pyjamas?

Maireas · 13/02/2022 13:02

@Valdes

I just can't believe that people get up, get washed, changed their underwear and then put pj's on.

Realistically, they've just got out of Bath and not bothered washing or changing their underclothes. It's not very hygienic is it?

I think so. It looks like they've just rolled out of bed.
ShallWeTalkAboutBruno · 13/02/2022 13:03

If they were the pyjamas you went to bed in I’d definitely judge, as it would mean you more than likely hadn’t washed and changed your underwear either.

Jolie12345 · 13/02/2022 13:05

No…not yet.

Loungeware is fine, but actual pyjamas are not, in my opinion.

Jolie12345 · 13/02/2022 13:08

Yes, I can see your point. Joggers etc make me feel very masculine and even more frumpy. I find that I can still feel somewhat feminine in the right pjs/lounge wear. I guess I’d rather look like I’d just got out of bed wearing something that actually makes me feel good, than like I’ve got dressed into something that makes me feel bad.

I think it's extremely weird. Why are normal clothes so uncomfortable?

Jolie12345 · 13/02/2022 13:10

Spot on with Lazy. When it comes to getting dressed I won’t pretend I’m not. But should I care if someone thinks I’m lazy purely based on what I’m wearing? I just don’t know how much it matters

In winter if I'm feeling lazy but need to go to the shop ill shove a pair of jeans on but leave the pyjama top on, with my coat zipped right up so no one can tell.

I can be a slob but some standards in society are really slipping tbh. I don't think there's any excuse for not bothering to spend 1min putting on jeans and a jumper/t shirt. Although I don't bother with a bra most of the time. Its embarrassing seeing people wander round the supermarket after the school run in pyjamas.

Moonface123 · 13/02/2022 13:12

l work in a large store and its not tolerated as we are a business, not a hospital. Seeing customers walking around in their dirty stained pjs is a sight for sore eyes. l personally think it looks terrible, sheer lazyness, it sends out the message "l can' t be bothered" and l wouldn' t do it.
There are plenty of cheap casual comfy clothes around, pyjamas are for sleeping in thats it.

Do you take your pyjamas off in the morning, wash, put on clean underwear and put your pyjamas back on?
Thethreecs · 13/02/2022 13:13

It does not matter if you wash, do hair and makeup, wearing pj's makes a person look tired, ill, unwashed, lazy, especially outdoors. You have gotten use to wearing them so that's why you feel uncomfortable in regular outdoor clothes. It's like people who wear jeans for the 1st time, they feel restricted, uncomfortable but wear them a few times including at home and they become so comfortable. Or someone who has worn elasticated waist band trousers, the minute they try a button and zip they think the waist band is digging into them. It's because they were use to the elastic waist band

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/02/2022 13:15

Gross and I would never do it, and if a friend turned up at my house like that I’d say wtf- yes be comfortable in my home but it’s not your bedtime

NeverChange · 13/02/2022 13:16

Wear what you want but you really can't expect people not to judge you for it.

To me, it's the height of laziness and screams I couldn't be bother to make an effort at even the basics.

Its a bit "look at me, Im such a rebel" Its like flashing your underwear. No one needs to see nightwear in the street or supermarket, its inappropriate.
StampOnTheGround · 13/02/2022 13:19

I go to my friends houses in trackies/pyjamas all the time - why would I go in something uncomfortable to sit on their sofa, it's only like being in your own house.

I wouldn't necessarily do the school run in those clothes, leggings are comfy enough for that. I'd nip to the shops in my loungewear (not full blown pyjamas though)

Legoisthebest · 13/02/2022 13:19

I am staring at my washing right now. There's a loose fitting pair of navy bottoms with white pattern on and a loose fitting greenish pair of bottoms with a flowery pattern on. I wear these with a plain colour t-shirts usually.
Which of those bottoms came from the loungewear (ie nightwear) section of Primark and which pair came from the regular clothes section?
How would you know just by looking at me and what I am wearing?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 13/02/2022 13:20

I was in the post office the other day (one of those corner shop ones) and the girl in front of me was in her pink flowery pjs and a dressing gown. WTF? Surely she could have pulled on some jeans and a coat buttoned up?

I have some quite nice lounge pants/joggers I wear for WFH - they are comfier than sitting in jeans all day. I am always showered/makeup/hair though.

Jolie12345 · 13/02/2022 13:21

“You can’t really expect people not to judge you for it”

Really? I think that’s the problem here. We should all be able to expect people not to judge us. Especially not for what we are wearing.
