Someone said I stink

This is more like a rant. When I'm doing the school run I wear the same clothes as I work 12 hour nights 8-8 and my son starts school at 8.45. I wear the same clothes to work because I work in a factory and I don't want to ruin good clothes.

The other day I was waiting for the teacher to open the door with some other parents, when I heard one of the parents say to the other that I stink. This annoyed me but I didn't say anything.

The annoying part is that these women don't work. They drop their kids off to school and then god knows what, they have no idea the 12 hour shift I've just done and how hard me and my husband work to be able to afford the luxuries we have.

I don't want my son picked on at school because parents are going around saying I stink. It's annoying as hell. I can't get changed after work because there just isn't time.

OP posts:

I can't get changed after work because there just isn't time.

Surely it takes about two minutes to slip on some new clothes?

Ddot · 15/09/2021 22:07

Kittysummer
OP cleans the cooked meat from the machines not the actual meat 🤣

Ash2956 · 15/09/2021 22:48

Get a Fabreze spray, you don’t want ur kid picked on. They are utter arseholes though. I feel for you, Fabreze will do the trick till you get home and shower ❤️

Everybody here who is suggesting spraying deodorant to sort it out has no idea. I’ve worked in meat factories and garlic factories and despite wearing overalls the smell gets everywhere. Not just clothes but pores too. The only way to remove is a shower which she clearly hasn’t got time for.

Kaley3043 · 15/09/2021 23:10

I wouldn't be offended op. They shouldn't have said it but I assume in your job you already know you might smell so they are just stating what you already knew. Plus it's very assey for you to assume they don't work. How do you know? Even if they don't work, what's it to do with you!! Dp works in a factory, admittedly not a food factory but he can get stinky. He always finds time to shower or at the very least wash and clean clothes!

chaosmaker · 15/09/2021 23:30

@BluebelllsRosesDaffodills

It helps smokers disguise the smell
Nope they just stink of fags and whatever they've tried to get rid of it with. Can't understand how anyone still smokes at all
Mildred007 · 15/09/2021 23:47

OP I live rurally and we have plenty of dad pig and chicken farmers collect their children from school. I can't say I've ever noticed they smell but I imagine close up they well might but I'd never dream of mentioning it as they've obviously come straight from work. Just ignore them. I assume this only happens at drop off anyway?

Deidre21 · 16/09/2021 05:28

They stink because they’re arseholes.
All this judging people when they have no idea about people’s lives.
Totally understand you’re concern for your child as it’s inconsiderate bitching nobody’s like that type of people who are at the school gate who spread mostly untrue gossip that stems from having no idea people.
If they were ok any way concerned or didn’t like the smell why not say something politely to you which would’ve given you a chance to explain yourself if you wanted to.
OR if they didn’t have anything nice to say then say nothing.
If I were to be near someone who did smell whether it was the smell of last night alcohol or b.o. I’d simply just move elsewhere instead of rudely ridiculing/embarrassing the person especially if it wasn’t someone I know. Lack of empathy - I see that a lot in people over in U.K. not sure if it’s because most of us were raised that way it trickles into how we are towards others?

Sagaz · 16/09/2021 06:56

So much drama here.

An odour of meat from machinery at a meat factory would be a very unpleasant and inexpected odour from another parent standing in close quarters waiting to pick up their child.

They arent judging you, they're just observing the bad smell.

It's not about "judgement".

Mothership4two · 16/09/2021 07:33

I think popping on clean tops would go some way to helping the smell of cooked meat. Not perfect but it would help.

Those parents are entitled to say what they want in a private conversation, but the fact that they did it near you OP and within hearing was very mean and nasty.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/09/2021 07:38

@SJ2020

No excuse… shower, change clothes ‘Daily’, use deodorant!
Oh god! Really?

How much beyond the thread titel did you actually read?

No excuse! READ THE FUCKING THREAD!

ufucoffee · 16/09/2021 10:34

I'm confused. Do you wear the same clothes to work every day?

Yogsgirl · 16/09/2021 10:48

I asked the OP if she wore clean clothes daily and she never replied, from that I am assuming she doesn't.

Kitchendrama1 · 16/09/2021 11:17

She can change clothes

ufucoffee · 16/09/2021 11:28

@Yogsgirl then that's why she smells. OP if you wear the same clothes to work everyday the people at work will think you smell too. I work in an office and I can't wear a top 2 days running because I'm naturally sweaty and they smell a bit at the end of the day. If I was doing a physical job like you I'd be honking to high heaven. If you don't want to ruin good clothes or can't afford them I'd suggest scouring charity shops or eBay for suitable work clothing. Enough so you can wear something clean every day.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 16/09/2021 13:41

I've had a smelly job and understand being short of time. Carry a change of clothes, something easy to put on like a dress. Wet wipes in the car which you can use in 10 seconds on armpits. Dry shampoo for your hair and a bit of deo. You could do this in the loo even just before the end of your shift. It's unfair on your child to be bullied over something you can help. I've had to use wipes on armpits on the train or bus by leaning down in my seat and facing away from people. Again, having worn something with easy access. Where there's a will, there's a way.

Plumtree391 · 16/09/2021 14:17

@Yogsgirl

I asked the OP if she wore clean clothes daily and she never replied, from that I am assuming she doesn't.
Oh don't please, that is so yuck. I know she doesn't wear 'good' clothes for work, it wouldn't be sensible to do so, but I assumed she had more than one set of clean, old clothes.

The way people are willing to let personal hygiene slide!!!

You need to make time it's unacceptable. If it meant looking for another job so you can keep on top of your hygiene then its necessary.

OP is more than happy to inflict her bodily scent on others at the school but yet isn't happy when she over hears a negative comment. I'm sorry but it works both ways! OP isn't the only parent working or busy for that matter.

Utter arseholes

Wolfiefan · 17/09/2021 11:10

OP hasn’t been back since the 14th!
Perhaps a journo started the thread?! Easier than going out and finding actual news. Grin

Allthenamesaretaken0 · 17/09/2021 12:28

That is quite gross though 🤢 stinking of meat in the playground, surely your car must reek. Can you not leave the overalls at work and change out of them when you leave? At least that will significantly lessen the smell

KaptainKaveman · 17/09/2021 12:36

@GreenWillow

Even a basic grasp of food hygiene tells you how offensive this is.

Would you be happy with, say a butcher rocking up at the school gate covered in blood? From a hygiene perspective, there’s not a great deal of difference, just that the impregnantion of cooked meat is not visible to the naked eye.

I do, however, agree with a pp that this is actually the fault of OP’s employer, not OP herself. Nobody should have to leave their place of work in this state.

WTF does 'impregnantion' mean?

And when did dropping your ds at school become a social occasion? you sound desperate for friends, GreenWillow .
