TRIGGER WARNING - suicide attempt

She's taken an overdose. And it's my fault, I left my medication where she could find it. Shit, shit, shit.

It’s not your fault OP. My DD is 18 and has depression, she has been suicidal a few times and I guarantee you that even if you had hidden the tablets she would have found them. Can you afford psychotherapy? My DD went through CAHMS which we found useless but has psychotherapy has been great for her. I hope your daughter gets the help she needs and you have support. Parenting a child with depression is hard, please don’t blame yourself.

Handhold OP Thanks

bubblebath62636 · 03/09/2021 22:18

It's not your fault op, massive handhold here Flowers

If it helps I was that teenager. I took my mum's antidepressants as they were lying around and I'd had enough that day.

I was diagnosed with depression and received counselling. I am now early 30s with two gorgeous DC, I never attempted it again. I also have a great relationship with my mum.

You're doing great being there for her op, hang in there.

OP I’ve been in your DD’s position and please believe me, this categorically is not your fault. If she wanted to hide the signs, she would have.

You think it is however, genuinely, it wasn’t. You said yourself you didn’t see the signs, so no, you can’t blame yourself.

She’ll be looked after physically but mentally, she’ll need support….as will you Flowers

lljkk · 03/09/2021 22:20

It's not your fault. Please don't feel that way.
The reasons are complex, not simple at all.

I'm so sorry you're going thru this. Flowers

Talk more about what's happened if that helps.

Plonkton · 03/09/2021 22:21

Not your fault at all. Handhold xxxx

Lougle · 03/09/2021 22:28

Don't blame yourself, just look after yourself.

ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 03/09/2021 22:33

Don't blame yourself OP, you've got her in the right place. Have you been able to chase it up? Is she triaged now? They should take obs and blood ASAP.

Spongeboob · 03/09/2021 22:33

It is not your fault. What matters is that you are there with her Thanks
I'd probably out myself giving my experience so I won't, but I've been there as that teenager. You're acting exactly as a mother should, please don't doubt yourself. You're there for her and that matters more than you'll realise in the moment.

elliejjtiny · 03/09/2021 22:37

I'm so sorry OP. My ds did the same thing when he was 12. I understand how you feel and I blamed myself too but it's really not your fault.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 03/09/2021 22:38

OP it's not your fault.

My DM has a history of trying to commit suicide and honestly, they'll find a way if that's what they want. I used to hide my medication after one attempt, she tried a different way. If it wasn't your pills it would have been something else or she'd have found them.

Has your daughter been getting help?

TableFlowerss · 03/09/2021 22:39

So sorry OP. Hopefully this nightmare will end for you both soon and DD will be in a better place. Thinking if you xxx

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 03/09/2021 22:41

I am so sorry Flowers

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 03/09/2021 22:46

Sympathy and love to you both. I hope you have the support you need. Flowers

Insidelaurashead · 03/09/2021 22:49

If they're not prioritising her, hopefully that means they're not massively worried, which is a positive sign, I hope. It is NOT your fault, OP.

mineofuselessinformation · 03/09/2021 22:51

The truth is, that if she hadn't found that, she would have found something else if she felt that way. Don't feel bad about the medication.
You've been a brilliant mum and tried to get her the help she needs.

Crystalvas · 03/09/2021 22:58

Im sorry you are going through this. Its not your fault OP if she was thinking of attempted suicide then she would have found some other way to try. Please don’t blame yourself its not yout fault.

JackOfGentleman · 03/09/2021 22:58

@FlissMumsnet

Hi JackOfGentleman,

We're so sorry to hear what has happened - we can only imagine how worried you must be.
We hope you don't mind but we've had to edit your opening post as it contained the name of the drug which we don't want to make freely available.

We've included some links/signposts to other places you may seek support for yourself or your DD.
NHS: Where to get urgent help for mental health
NHS: Looking after your mental health
MIND: Coping with mental health problems during coronavirus
CALM: The Campaign Against Living Miserably
NHS: Help for suicidal thoughts

Wishing your daughter a speedy recovery and we hope brighter times are ahead for you both
Flowers

Thank you.

It’s not your fault at all, you’re there with her and that’s all you can do and all that she needs from you right now Flowers

JackOfGentleman · 03/09/2021 23:01

Sorry, haven't had time to read all of the replies. She's on a ward waiting to be assessed from what she says. But she said she couldn't stay awake and her texts didn't really make sense so I'm wondering if she's passed out or something? She only had a chair, not a bed. I'm also panicking in case they don't have my contact details - how would they find me??? I'm waiting in the car, nowhere else to be.

I'm so, so worried.

Hope you're ok, god bless. It's not your fault.

Hate that a 19yo would feel the need to do that. Sending you prayers x

Please don’t blame yourself, she may well have just found another way to harm herself if she hadn’t found the medicine. Wishing her a speedy recovery Flowers

LexieB · 03/09/2021 23:10

I took an overdose at 18 and obviously survived after having my stomach pumped. It definitely was nothing to do with my parents so please don’t blame yourself. It’s hard for people to understand but you are in such a terrible place you really feel the world would be better off without you and just want the awful thoughts to stop. I really hope your daughter is OK and obviously I’m very pleased I was unsuccessful in my attempt. Your daughter could of got her hands on medication even if it’s wasn’t the ones from your cupboard. Once you make your mind up to go ahead you find a way
