What was your first meal after childbirth?

I'm having a c section at a hospital that has no cafes / restaurants nearby apart from the league of friends which isn't particularly appealing! I know I'll be famished so looking for some inspiration.

What was the first thing you ate after childbirth?

Toast supplied by the midwife while we waited to be moved to the ward.

Once on the word we got meals there I can’t remember my whole meal but it involves that mash they give you in ice cream
Scoops and green beans. It was bloody glorious

Roarroar · 30/06/2021 12:17

Depending on the time, you'll be fed in hospital. Think I had toast and cereal after my first, and roast chicken after my second. Take a big bag of snacks though!

BumpLoading · 30/06/2021 12:17

Won't the hospital provide you with food once you're there and given birth?
Once I'd given birth the midwife brought in sausages and mash which was amazing as I was so hungry. They also had a kitchen in the birthing unit which had snacks and sandwiches etc so could help yourself once you'd given birth but appreciate its different in each hospital / ward.

I had a cheese sandwich with crisps and juice and then for dinner later on was cottage pie with beans and chips - ruddy amazing!

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 30/06/2021 12:18

Piece of cold toast.

ElderMillennial · 30/06/2021 12:18

Toast

HairsprayBabe · 30/06/2021 12:18

I had a subway but I wasn't particularly hungry

Saidtoomuch · 30/06/2021 12:19

The best and most welcome buttered toast ever!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 30/06/2021 12:19

First.. can't remember. Think it was boiled egg and a bread roll. (Breakfast,)

Second... homebirth... I got my mum to chuck a pizza in the oven as the midwives left! I remember being furious when she wanted to throw away the leftovers.. I wanted them to a snack an the inevitable night feeds.

Saidtoomuch · 30/06/2021 12:20

Pack some cereal bars in your hospital bag @Cbd333.

Patapouf · 30/06/2021 12:20

Disgusting half toasted cold bread with margerine.

I can't fathom why everyone raves about toast they get on the maternity wards because it's in the top 5 worst meals I've ever had 😂

Pack lots of snacks!!

Putthekettleon2021 · 30/06/2021 12:20

Hadn't eaten all day, there was no way I could eat through labour.
When I got to the ward I'd missed dinner, so DP managed to get a leftover sandwich from one of the midwives.

The meals were shocking and rarely anything hot left to eat. Luckily I brought plenty of snacks and drinks.

Ozanj · 30/06/2021 12:20

I was eating oat based cereal bars lol as I couldn’t walk to get my meals.

PeterPomegranate · 30/06/2021 12:20

Whatever the hospital fed me. I can’t remember. As previous posters I was starving and had been released from the gestational diabetes diet I had been following before so everything was amazing.

FTEngineerM · 30/06/2021 12:21

Toast, actually they went back and made me another load because I’d been nil by mouth for daaayys 😢 well I think it was 1.5 days but it felt like a life time.

Then or male ward food, will your hospital not be providing any? With a spinal you’ll probably not be able to eat for a while before it.

idontlikealdi · 30/06/2021 12:21

C section at midnight, couldn't face breakfast.

Went to visit DTs in SCBU and they had left me tinned ravioli and salad on my bed for lunch. I cannot explain to you how vile it was.

DH was dispatched to Mcdonalds for a quarter pounder with cheese.

SpindleWhorl · 30/06/2021 12:23

I hadn't eaten for well over 24 hours, I had a long, gruelling labour, and after childbirth was given one slice of toast with margarine at midnight, told to be quiet, and that I had to wait for breakfast to come round at 7.30-8am if I wanted anything else to eat.

If we'd been warned, I could have been prepared. They'd already sent ExH home, so he couldn't help. I was stuck in bed on a drip, and told to stay put. It was awful.

Take sandwiches.

elliejjtiny · 30/06/2021 12:23

DC1 - nothing straight after, just went to bed and slept and fed the baby until lunchtime the next day.

DC2 - sainsburys own version of a chinese takeaway

DC3 - the best toast and jam ever

DC4 - toast and jam

DC5 - tuna sandwich and rhubarb crumble about 10 hours after baby was born. Didn't want to eat anything because I felt so sick from the morphine but the midwife persuaded me and it was actually really nice.

Cbd333 · 30/06/2021 12:25

After my daughter (forceps) we were at a london hospital so I sent my husband to go and get a chicken Caesar baguette and salt and gingers crisps from pret and it was the most glorious thing I've ever eaten and is all I can think about. This baby we have to be in hospital
By 7am with no idea what time the op will happen. Honestly thinking of buying one the Day before and taking it in in a cool bag but wondering if that would be stale the next day and also slightly excessive (spot the 38 week pregnant greedy guts!)

Toast with butter, biscuits and a cup of tea and honestly it tasted like the best meal I’ve ever had in my life!! I had been in labour for 50 hours.

We got out of hospital on Christmas Day so when we got home my DH still cooked a Christmas dinner and we had Buck’s Fizz! Grin

Due my second any time now and I’ve already said I want a pizza from the delicious local Italian when I get home from giving birth!

Getawriggleon · 30/06/2021 12:30

Toast after both with a side of tea and biscuits.
Had Mac & cheese with chocolate pudding and custard after DC2.

Cbd333 · 30/06/2021 12:31

@MrsXx4 that sounds lush! I've said I want cured meats, brie, really thick sourdough bread, proper farm shop butter and a glass of ice cold white wine!

With dc2 (emcs at 6am) tea and buttered toast at around 9am (delicious) and soup and a sandwich at lunchtime.

Cbd333 · 30/06/2021 12:33

I'm a freak who doesn't like melted butter so might take in a tub of peanut butter, feel like that would be good energy food. I also love those cheese pastry twists you get from supermarket bakery aisles mmmmm

@Cbd333 oh yessssss!!!! That sounds amazing! I am going to add that to my list now too! 😂
