What was your first meal after childbirth?

I'm having a c section at a hospital that has no cafes / restaurants nearby apart from the league of friends which isn't particularly appealing! I know I'll be famished so looking for some inspiration.

What was the first thing you ate after childbirth?

Cheese and pickle sandwich that I packed for DH (i was being induced). It was like bloody nectar of the gods with a cuppa after being in labour all day!

theDudesmummy · 30/06/2021 12:36

The most welcome piece of toast and cup of tea ever. I had not eaten/drunk for over 24 hours by that time (c-section).

thatllberight · 30/06/2021 12:37

Dry roll as they couldn't accommodate my food allergies. Took them two days to find me something to eat after I had DD1, DH was smuggling food in to keep me going.

I didn't get tea and toast! Everyone goes on about it but I was never offered it. DH went and bought me a cheese savoury sandwich, some crisps and I'm sure some kind of chocolate! Ate that about 4pm then moved onto the ward so missed tea and didn't eat until breakfast the next morning. Deffo take snacks!

otterbaby · 30/06/2021 12:38

@Patapouf yes! Everyone raves about the infamous nhs toast but it was crap. My meal after that was a limp ham sandwich.

But when I got home that night...massive cheese board with different meats and salami, cheese, hummus, crackers, chutney and a giant glass of Wine

I recommend taking easy snacks with you - cereal bars, nuts, wine gums. I also packed some M&S juice boxes (apple and mango or something) which were amazing for during labour and afterwards. I was kept in for 36 hours and DH wasn't able to be there because of Covid so couldn't run to the shop in the hospital for me...so I was really glad I had plenty of snacks!

@BumpLoading

Won't the hospital provide you with food once you're there and given birth? Once I'd given birth the midwife brought in sausages and mash which was amazing as I was so hungry. They also had a kitchen in the birthing unit which had snacks and sandwiches etc so could help yourself once you'd given birth but appreciate its different in each hospital / ward.
They didn't for me! Because you had to walk to the dining room and I couldn't because my legs weren't working, I asked if someone could bring me something and I was told they weren't waitresses. One of the night time maternity nurses made me some toast about midnight. 36 hours without food.

After my first one, dh made me a veg curry with rice and naan. After the second, I think it was spaghetti bolognese with garlic bread (I'd made the bolognese and frozen it for this occasion). Both of mine were born at home though so really easy for him to just go down to the kitchen and whip something up. I'm not sure what I'd want if we were near other options (no restaurants/takeaways/shops near us really so had to be something from home). I was in hospital with dd when she was little and remember him bringing me Domino's, which was tasty. Though also the sponge puddings with custard in hospital were amazing too. I still think about those!

My first- I got down to the ward at tea time & was presented with a tray of food.. lasagne & jam sponge pudding. I had HG in pregnancy & HATED food for 9 months to be honest, everything made me sick. I had also not eaten since 6pm the following days bar a few sweets. The hospital lasagne & pudding was possibly the best thing I’d ever eaten 😂

DD2 was born in 3 hours overnight. Similarly, was very ill through pregnancy & hadn’t been able to stomach chocolate for 9 months. I are an entire bag of mini eggs and some the nicest toast.

Vooga · 30/06/2021 12:50

Toast which I very quickly vomited back up. I don't remember after that.

PassTheVinoTinto · 30/06/2021 12:50

First child, hospital birth and a fab nurse brought me the best toast I've ever had.

Second child, homebirth and I made DH get me a huge pizza, so long ago and no deliveries I was starving and ate the lot!

riotlady · 30/06/2021 12:50

My mum brought me a McDonald’s, it was great!

I’d had gestational diabetes so literally every person that came to visit me brought me all the carby/sugary things I hadn’t been able to eat for months.

DonLewis · 30/06/2021 12:51

Hospital food. Quiche and beans. Well weird.

EarlGreywithLemon · 30/06/2021 12:52

We had packed lots of snacks (crackers, cheese twits, fruit, cereal bars, dried fruit, haribo etc). I had some Haribo when I was in labour and on an epidural, but I really didn’t fancy any of it after the birth. It was past 9pm when we arrived on the recovery ward, so my husband popped into the only shop that was still open, a Tesco, and got me a cheese and ham sandwich and a Mueller rice pudding - both my at my request! We were then in hospital for 5 days so he got me all sorts- pizza, burger and chips, Wagamama noodles, various baguettes, bacon rolls and, my favourite, croissants and hot chocolate for breakfast Smile

EarlGreywithLemon · 30/06/2021 12:52

Cheese twists not twits!! 😀😀😀

Planttrees · 30/06/2021 12:53

Toast and jam with a mug of tea - it tasted so good!

Cornishbelle · 30/06/2021 12:55

Dc1 tuna jacket potato and dc2 tuna pasta. Just coincidence unless hospitals round here have a tuna stockpile!!

Molehillfromamountain · 30/06/2021 12:55

DD in hospital, buttered toast...twas glorious.
DS home birth, opened a box of chocolate biscuits at 3am and shared them with the lovely midwife.

Strokethefurrywall · 30/06/2021 12:56

Husband bought us an Italian feast after DS1 I think (private room) - I think I was ready to eat about 5 hours after birth.
DS2 was born at 6am, so he left to drop DS1 at preschool and came back with a massive mug of tea and 2 steak bakes.
Absolutely blissful!
I was seriously ill with DS2 around 30 weeks and he was nearly born by EMCS. Once my OBGYN had stabilized me and stopped me vomiting (6 hours later) he demanded I eat and ended up going out to our local (awesome) kebab vendor and getting a full meal for me, DH and all the midwives on the ward.
If any of his patients deliver between hours of 10pm-2am he gets them a kebab meal! Bloody love that man!

worrybutterfly · 30/06/2021 13:01

I gave birth just before lunch and they asked me what I wanted off the hospital food menu. I'll

I picked macaroni cheese and it was the best thing I've even eaten.

There was a kitchen with a microwave on the post natal ward. So my DH had a microwave meal (which his mum dropped off at the ward for him). Although with Covid I'm not sure if that'll still be a thing.

EssentialHummus · 30/06/2021 13:01

I remember the MW offering me toast but I don't remember eating it. I'm sure I did. DH then ordered in pizzas for us and all the midwives on shift, so we both had pizzas in the birth centre and we had happy MWs sticking their heads into the room to say thanks and congratulate us on DD. It was lovely.

LouNatics · 30/06/2021 13:03

First baby, I didn’t want to eat after I’d given birth. My DH ordered pizza for all the visitors but I couldn’t face it. I was put off by the smell so I took the baby upstairs while they ate it, much to the chagrin of all the people who’d come to see said baby. It was a couple of days before I was in the mood to eat anything and the first thing I ended up having was a bowl of raw chopped up vegetables as that’s all I fancied.

Second baby DH cooked for us and made a pie. I ate a couple of mouthfuls to be polite but really, I don’t think I’m cut out for big meals post birth. Third I can’t remember.

SockQueen · 30/06/2021 13:07

First one - toast followed by a sausage sandwich from the League of Friends. I'd just missed lunch and dinner wasn't for ages so DH went out for me.

Second - toast, then battered sausage and chips from the chippy (again, missed dinner, DH sent out). Except I had a PPH while he was out, which took several hours to sort out and then had to stay nil by mouth for a while in case I needed to go to theatre, so the food was stone cold by the time I was finally allowed to eat it at about 1am. Still the tastiest thing ever.

Somuchgoo · 30/06/2021 13:11

Totally outing for anyone that knows me, but after my planned section they refused lunch to see if I could manage toast. I didn't feel remotely poorly and was ravenous, and was very grumpy they wouldn't give me lunch.

They then kept forgetting my toast, which annoyed me further.

Eventually I persuaded them to give me a proper lunch (jacket potato I think) after pointing out that whilst they'd been forgetting about my toast, I'd eaten an entire box of mini millionaire shortbread bites, and if the combination of caramel and chocolate wasn't upsetting my post section digestion then I could certainly manage lunch!!! They conceded I probably had a point 😂 I'd been weirdly fantasising about lunch during my section do I was very grumpy they were procrastinating about it.

I think I might order a pizza delivery if I have another baby!

I also remember eating roast beef, lots of ice cream, chicken curry, and topping up the slightly depressing toast, yoghurt and fruit breakfast, with a full English brought up from the canteen.

I was mid way through my third hash brown when the doctor cake to check on me, and laughed that I seemed to be recovering ok.

Newhousehope · 30/06/2021 13:11

Toast. Which I think I threw up 🙈

Freshprincess · 30/06/2021 13:12

Toast.
I hadn’t eaten for 24 hours. I couldn’t sit up properly to butter it myself so the nurse did it. She put more on than I would use in a week. It was delicious.
