What was your first meal after childbirth?

I'm having a c section at a hospital that has no cafes / restaurants nearby apart from the league of friends which isn't particularly appealing! I know I'll be famished so looking for some inspiration.

What was the first thing you ate after childbirth?

Sandwich as I missed the dinner round.

Then had breakfast and on the way home got a mcds Grin.

AliasGrape · 30/06/2021 13:14

Tea and toast - it was great, I hadn't eaten in well over 24 hours Proper butter in our hospital, and sugary tea.

Same again the next morning for breakfast, don't know what after that I was in for 5 days and the ward food was vile but I felt like crap and had that constant 'ill' taste in my mouth so that didn't help. DH couldn't come and go the same because of covid so couldn't dispatch him for treats though I did have a large snack bag packed for labour which I wasn't able to use during so I made the most of after.

When I heard I was being discharged I did the biggest online sainsbury's shop ever on my phone, literally ordered everything I' could think of that I enjoyed eating - I'd already stocked the freezer with batch cooked healthy options but decided that wasn't going to cut it. Have deliberately blanked out how much I spent in that shop.

Sushi and champagne which my DH bought in - i couldn’t face it though and just had toast and tea!!

Something disgusting abs inedible about 7 hours after delivery for the first.

Fish and chips after the second (walking distance from Standalone MLU)

Jacket potato, cheese, enormous salad after the third one.

All my children were born at mealtimes. Most inconvenient.

WaltzingTilda · 30/06/2021 13:19

Toast and tea provided by midwife. Not sure about taking peanut butter though as it is an allergen. Dont really want any of the mothers/babies /staff having a reaction if they are allergic to them. Maybe you should ask the hospital if it is okay first.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 30/06/2021 13:20

Honestly can’t remember with DS1. I don’t think I got anything until the hospital meal came around and it clearly wasn’t memorable.

DS2 was the most disappointing piece of toast I’ve ever had in my life. Stone cold with margarine.

I also can’t understand why everyone raves about the toast. I guess it depends how fresh the toast is. If it’s served quickly after being made, it’s probably lovely. Mine had to be requested from catering and took ages to show up and was cold and hard when it did 🙁 I didn’t even finish it.

majesticallyawkward · 30/06/2021 13:20

The best toast I've ever eaten after both births! Probably tasted so good after not eating for the full day while in labour, the post birth hormones and sheer exhaustion! DH was given tea and toast too and he still raves about it.

With the first baby I was very grateful they then brought me some hot food, she was born early evening and they'd kept a meal for me. When we were finally be discharged with dc2 after an EMCS and week stay in scbu DH and DD brought subway breakfast sandwiches and even slightly cold they were amazing! Stayed with the theme of terrible food and ordered parmos for tea. DD loved those first couple of days with barely a vegetable in sight.

Mishmased · 30/06/2021 13:21

I have a five week old baby by elcs. My section was scheduled for the morning so I was fasting from 2am with just sips of water. Section didn't happen until 5:30pm that evening due to issues arising from the cyberattack on the health service system. After section I started vomiting from theatre and continued in recovery for almost an hour. By the time I could eat it was 1am in the morning and I had gone without food for more than 24 hours. I started with the hospital two slices of toast and yoghurt (light diet due to c section). There was already food brought for me from home so I ate rice, roast chicken, salad, nutrigrain bar and yoghurt. I guess I was making up for not being able to eat during pregnancy due to nausea and when I'm starving I need proper food not snacks 😂

bakingdemon · 30/06/2021 13:31

A horrible hospital sandwich because that's all my husband could find. I wouldn't have been fed on the ward if he wasn't there as apparently nourishment for post party's mums wasn't a priority for the ward staff....

AprilAzpilicueta · 30/06/2021 13:32

With DC1 I gave birth at lunchtime on Friday and hadn't eaten a thing since Wednesday, they brought me a cheese sandwich and a pot of orange juice and by that point I was 100% more interested in the food than the baby I'd just given birth to Grin
DC2 was a homebirth and I had hot buttered crumpets with honey on my own sofa and I don't think I will ever taste anything better.

Navilana · 30/06/2021 13:35

When she came to check on us after our son was born, my MIL brought me dark slices of bread, with smoked salmon and Philadelphia cream cheese. I found that gesture heartmelting (delicious, too!), I had really missed that during pregnancy Grin

Pongo101 · 30/06/2021 13:37

I honestly think whatever you eat it will be the most splendid thing you have ever eaten in your life.

It's s combination of the tiredness/hormones

I was ravenous after my 18 hour labor and was waiting to be stitched and moved to the ward. Couldn't stop talking about how hungry I was and the midwife felt so sorry for me she fished out her own supermarket sandwich to give me (absolutely a fucking hero)

That soggy sandwich is the best thing I've ever eaten in my life. I remember making orgasm noises as I ate it.

MiddleParking · 30/06/2021 13:47

I had cold cardboard toast with packet margarine too, it was vile. But then I had a school-lunch style roast chicken dinner, which was absolutely divine. I remember when all my visitors left for the night and I got cuddled up with tiny DD, loads of Jaffa cakes, grapes and my water bottle, I loved it Smile not as much as I’d have loved to go home though!

RainingZen · 30/06/2021 13:54

DH brought me a tub of fruit salad. So refreshing and digestible. I lived off toast and sandwiches (stuck in hospital for several days) and the fruit was amazing.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 30/06/2021 13:58

@Patapouf

Disgusting half toasted cold bread with margerine.

I can't fathom why everyone raves about toast they get on the maternity wards because it's in the top 5 worst meals I've ever had 😂

Pack lots of snacks!!

Me too! They went on about it in the antenatal classes, to the point where I was more excited about that than the actual birth. So disappointed 😞
Somuchgoo · 30/06/2021 13:58

Tbh, this is less if a thing after a planned section - no labour or tiredness, full night sleep before etc

I was hungry as I wasn't allowed breakfast, but was back on the ward in time for lunch, so just the one missed meal. If you're kept waiting you might get very hungry though.

For my first, baby was born at 10, and I was eating snacks by 11.

StevieNix · 30/06/2021 13:59

Got offered a leftover beef stew (as I’d missed dinner and hadn’t eaten in over 48 hours due to being sick) but I turned that down as I’m not usually fussy but just couldn’t bring myself to eat that.
I had a peperami and a cereal bar from my bag to last me until the next day - pack lots of nice snacks! If you don’t eat them in labour (which I didn’t) you will be greatful to have some in your bag for night feeds etc

Squaffle · 30/06/2021 14:04

Bugger all! DD was born at 1:15am, nothing was open, they removed the midwives' toaster because of health and safety so I had to wait until breakfast... which I then missed as I was in surgery for a retained placenta. Moral of the story: take food!

MMAMPWGHAP · 30/06/2021 14:06

Pizza. Precooked and frozen. It defrosted during labour. Best pizza ever.

GrandmasterGlitchsMoustache · 30/06/2021 14:08

If you're having a C Section then you'll probably be nauseous and need to be careful about food. The midwives will give you some water & dry biscuits and then later some toast to check if you keep it down. Then later on you can try a proper meal. I was very vommy for about 6 hours post surgery and others I know have been too. Dry snacks like cereal bars, cheddars etc are good for the first day then chocolate, cake etc are all fine.

Sheffieldcoolingtowers · 30/06/2021 14:09

I had a planned section a few weeks ago and when I was waiting the housekeeping team got em to order my lunch. They advised a light lunch so had an egg Mayo sandwich and jelly/ice cream Smile then pasta for tea. the next day sticky toffee pudding and custard at lunch was amazing though Grin And home made quiche.
Definitely take snacks for middle of the night.

everydaysablessing · 30/06/2021 14:12

Two rounds of toast that I vomited up.

After that hospital food supplemented with snacks. Dinner was at 5pm then nothing till about 8am breakfast the next day. The midwives asked us all to email the ceo to say new mothers that are up every few hours and trying to breastfeed need more food! On the third night husband snuck in a maccas and they knew I was well enough to go home then.

HoppingPavlova · 30/06/2021 14:14

Umh, the next hospital meal that came along….. Is that not normal?

So, probably a bland concoction of something that didn’t look appetising but tasted great being the first meal post labour.

mangojango · 30/06/2021 14:16

Fish and potatoes. Was bloody lovely!!

ArtichokeAardvark · 30/06/2021 14:17

First child - cold, dry toast. I ate it because I was so starving after nil by mouth for nearly 20 hours before my C-section (I was the last one of the day) and I'd missed the dinner round. It was all I had until 7am the next morning too. I had a horrendous time at that hospital.

Second child, different hospital - the utterly wonderful anaesthetist produced an ice pop whilst they were still stitching me up. It was like nectar- refreshing and sugary while my blood pressure was low post-surgery. And then a yummy tomatoey pasta with shacks of cheese once I was on the ward.
