Hi all, I can't believe how big our babies are all getting and we're on to chats about weaning already! Brilliant that this thread is still going!

Quinn is 23 weeks on Sunday so 5.5 months. For the past few days I've given her two teaspoons of baby rice as it's mixed with her formula so thought it would taste similar to what she is used to. She is big, she's been in 6-9 month clothes for a while so I felt she was ready. I'm just planning to stick with plain baby rice and baby porridge for a few weeks to get her used used to texture and swallowing then do a few weeks of purées (I've made a big batch of mainly veg and some fruit that are already in the freezer) then I'm going to go onto more solid stuff and do baby led weaning using finger food. She has no teeth yet so I'm a bit worried how she'll cope with harder textures like toast etc but I don't think her teeth are far away. I bought a great book (link below) that's been recommended to me by several people that has lots of weaning ideas and gives guidance on how to approach it for anyone that would find it useful. I think ultimately you just have to approach it whatever way you feel is best for your baby x

@Kj1010 yes I'm sure it is you know.
I had to have a c section, (born in November), minimal bleed theybsaid in hospital. Didn't bleed at all after coming home for a few weeks. Midwives thought it very odd. Anyway, started bleeding for a while after - minimal mind. This lasted few weeks then no period until last week.
It's definitely all the adjusting I think, hormones and your body adjusting shape etc. As you say, he's only 4 months old... it will take a while I think to readjust and sort itself out. Try not to worry. X

@Jwl45 yeah I had to have a csection planned as lo was flexed breech since 28 weeks would not budge lol and yes I think your right my body probably hasn't gone back to full normal yet I'm just a worrier in general tbh lol @NaomiB79 it is madness that we are now all weaning our babies etc my lo only in 3/6 clothes he has had toast no prob just sucks the life out of it lol oh and these biscotti biscuits banana flavour and I did panick g at first has even though he has no teeth he snapped the biscuit off but it dissolved so quickly in his mouth and he loves them now I think his teeth will soon make a appearance

Hi everyone, glad to have found you again, lost the thread for ages.

LO is 4.5 months and we're still in the midst of the 4th month regression I think, although the past week has been better. We've taken away LO's dummy as we found we were spending more time trying to keep it in his mouth than him sleeping, and then it'd still wake him once it fell out! We're on day 3 without it and he's finally managed to fall asleep without any screaming for all 3 of his naps today 🥳 he generally goes down for the night between 6-8pm, then wakes ~40mins later for a feed and then another one around 11pm. Some nights he has one more around 2am, but not always, and then sleeps through til 8/9am. We've put him into his own room 2 weeks ago and it's made a huge difference to his sleep! It's only nextdoor and the walls are paper thin, so we can hear him really well still but it's stopped us waking him up 🙏

@Charl88 sorry to hear you're struggling! We're EBF but only pumped milk, ever since my LO's bad allergic reaction to pears in my milk, he won't go back to the boob 😞

Can't believe it'll be weaning time soon! Hoping we can finally find some answers in regards to my little man's allergies once we start giving him food directly.

kkr168 · 08/04/2021 10:09

@Yellowbeansontoast It's good to hear the dummy removal has been successful, we gave our LO a dummy as it apparently helps with reflux, his reflux still isn't 100% controlled so we've not tried to remove it yet.
I don't think we'll have any trouble when the time comes, he'll pop the dummy out once asleep & won't awaken for it, he tends to want it more when awake so hopefully we'll be able to distract him from using it.

@Kj1010 It definitely sounds like anxiety, maybe worth chatting to your gp. I really need to start healthy eating & exercising, I gained barely anything whilst pregnant but have definitely put on weight since!! Tommy was such hard work for his 1st 8 odd weeks, with his reflux & milk allergy, he pretty much cried all day, so we lived off take aways, microwave food or anything we could shove in the oven quickly with little to no prep. We're all in a much better place now so time to get my butt in gear, I'm desperate to take him swimming but wouldn't feel comfortable going currently!

@Nic2908
My little one absolutely loves this. It's her go to toy! She also has a fabric book which she loves.
I also bought multilinks few weeks ago.... which she is loving at the minute x

FrainBart · 09/04/2021 00:38

My DS (22 weeks) absolutely loves this book www.amazon.co.uk/Little-Ducks-Classic-Books-Holes/dp/0859531414?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 and when he's crying I sing the duck song and he finds it so soothing he instantly goes quiet/starts smiling.

He has many toys but loses interest after a couple of minutes. The only one he likes is one similar to this which belonged to his older brother. He's a bit young for it and needs supervision but it keeps him occupied for ages www.thetoyshop.com/baby-pre-school/6-12-months/VTech-Turn-%26-Learn-Cube/p/516948?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=organicshopping

kkr168 · 09/04/2021 10:40

@Nic2908 my sons absolute favourite is the linkimals sloth, but honestly don't buy it, its torture 🤣 It sings/talks, lights up & flaps its arms but only for a few seconds, so I'm constantly pressing the buttons, he loves it though!!
He also loves his rainmaker, his favourite toy that he plays with independently is his playmat, I swap the dangly toys around every so often so he doesn't get bored.

I had a drs appointment yesterday so thought I'd chase up Tommy's hospital referral for his milk allergy & reflux, only to find they haven't even referred him, so bloody angry!! It is in their own guidelines that a referral must be made when prescribing dairy free milk. I now have to wait for a telephone consultation with his dr on thursday, to complain & get him referred. In the meantime I have spoken to a friend who went through the same with her baby, the dietitian told her to start weaning early as it can help with reflux. We gave baby porridge a go this morning, he was not impressed!!

kkr168 · 09/04/2021 10:46

Tommy with his sloth toy, it's been great for tummy time.

I managed to book a space at music bugs, we start end of April, it will make a change being around other mums & babies.

Love to you all xx

Charl88 · 09/04/2021 16:51

Do your babies have a bedtime routine? How old when you started putting them to bed? Baby is 16 weeks and I'm starting to think its time. He still sleeps on me downstairs until we go to bed

Yellowbeansontoast · 10/04/2021 22:29

@Charl88 we started straightaway actually. I offer him a feed about half hour before bedtime (he doesn't always take it), then we change diaper, put lots of body lotion on (he has bad eczema, so we spend some time really moisturising everywhere), pyjamas on, sleepsack on and last thing we read him a book whilst he's already in his crib. We've been reading him the same one since he was a few weeks old, it's called 'Kiss Goodnight'. After that, we turn the lights off, put his white noise on and tell him night night. He's been having a bit of trouble falling asleep since we took his dummy away a couple of days ago, but he generally falls asleep within 10mins after a bit of shushing and whining. Only wakes up for 1 or 2 feeds in the night and puts himself back to sleep after, so I'd say it's working for us! Smile

Jwl45 · 10/04/2021 22:51

Our routine: Bath, downstairs to dry/ get dressed for bed, play if not too tired, (although usually is ready around 7pm), bottle and she goes to sleep on the couch.
We carry her up when we go up. We then put her in her little sleeping bag and into her crib. (She is still in our room at the moment and I haven't bought a monitor so Don't want to send her up on her own as I wouldn't hear her from downstairs. ) She will then sleep through.

Nic2908 · 11/04/2021 11:23

We have a routine too. We bath every other night.. if its a bath night we got upstairs around 6.15 read a book together, he then watches some night time baby sensory on YouTube whilst I'm running the bath. We then do our bath routine, moisturise. Have a bottle, sleep sack on, down in next to me crib, white noise on and he is asleep usually by 7.20 at latest. We have a monitor so I then go down stairs. We have been using the monitor for day time naps since he was about 6 weeks old or so. If not a bath night upto bed around half 6, read a book, get changed, moisturise, bottle, sleep sack, next to me and asleep again no later than 7.20 usually. Noah is 16 weeks now.

I can't believe how time is flying it is absolutly crazy

Kj1010 · 11/04/2021 17:21

Hiya all my lo doesnt have a dead set pattern but he generally goes down by 9.30pm every night we bath every other day but sometimes that wakes him up can I ask how often and long ur lo sleep through the day my lo goes through different phases so he mostly cat naps like 15 to 30 mins at a time then awake for like a hour then back to sleep the last couple days his been a sleep fr like a good hour to 2 hours then wakes for bottle a little play time then back to sleep I mean today he has basically been asleep as we have been out football matches all day he was awake for about hour or so then asleep I think shud I worry is it normal he is 18 weeks tomorrow also he still snores when I spoke to doctor they didnt seem concerned at all said it's because nasal passages etc are small and narrow it doesnt effect his breathing or anything but not sure if he shud still be snoring

OP posts:
Jellycat2020 · 11/04/2021 18:01

@Charl88 we've always had a sort of routine of nappy, pj's and bottle around 7-8pm, sleep on us downstairs til around 10pm then goes to bed with us, nappy, bottle, sleeping bag and down in next-to-me crib by around 10.30pm - 11pm. But recently, she's started refusing to sleep on us after 7pm bottle and then gets overtired and v v ratty. So we've moved bedtime to that bottle instead and so far so good 🤞same routine and asleep around 8.30pm. Bath 2 or 3 times a week before bottle. She's always been a good night sleeper but now she's managing 10 hours straight through!

Jwl45 · 11/04/2021 19:48

@Kj1010 my little one sometimes snores when she's sleeping. She tends to nap after 2 hours of waking (she's been playing etc) this can literally be a cat nap of 15 min to half hour.. or sometimes more. She will nap then in afternoon and early evening before settling for bed around 7/8 pm. It does vary though. Put her I the pram she will sleep no matter what time it is lol.
We've also had a couple of nights where she has slept through from 6pm ish.. I was a bit worried then I have to say but thought like us, they're bound to get more tired some days than others eh. X
