Oh goody,a May babies bit! I've read some of this thread, and it's great to see -
not all babies sleep to order(my dd - born 21st May - wakes to feed twice a night and won't sleep during the day) and
not everyone waits until 6 months to introduce solids and/or follows Gina Ford religiously.
Would appreciate comments - after following a strict timetable re: feeding and sleeping with dd1, have failed miserably to follow a routine with this one and, although it's been more enjoyable, as a result I now have a baby who won't touch a bottle. I start work in four weeks. Anyone had this problem and resolved it before going back to work? Don't want to express.

"not everyone waits until 6 months to introduce solids and/or follows Gina Ford religiously"

Eeep... why am I feeling slightly attacked by my choices in that statement

Hi Helsy, Welcome to the thread, my dd2 was also born on May 21st Is this your first baby?

Have you tried getting someone else to give your dd a bottle? I know that when I stopped breastfeeding and moved my dd2 onto bottles my dh had to do them at first as she wouldn't take them from me as she could smell my milk.

I'm sure there are others on this thread who had similar problems to start with and will be able to advise.

Interested in this thread?

Thanks for the advice Linnet, this is dd2 so snap! DH has tried giving bottles, but she's not falling for it at the moment and I'm not sure I'm strong enough to withhold a feed until she's so desperate she'll take a bottle.
GeorginaA, I'm pointing up my OWN imperfections and neuroses!

SusiS · 06/11/2004 08:28

morning everybody!
had a quite bad night! but actually not due to ds! nope, it was dp - the 2 nights we share a bed he wants it all! and snores too - i can't win, can i? - so he woke me at 1am and made me move to the other bedroom (quite uncomfortable bed ) - then ds woke at 4am (as usual on his tummy) and stayed awake for an hour (gigglin, talking, babbling, ...) and woke finally at 6.30 - had his milk and breakfast and is back to bed now! i wish i could go back to bed too. but once i am up that's it for me. i can't sleep during the day

besides that no news on our front!
ds still loves his solids; whatever i give him (made a new patch of veggies yday); and it's so much less messy without the blender.

if possible i'd like to take ds swimming tom. will have to call if there is a free place
and we'll take dp along to video it

georgina: well done! keep us informed about your progress! (wordwise) - but also on weaning! i really love feeding ds! it's fun and especially the fist few sessions were more like "bodypainting" - i actually stripped him naked apart from nappy
now he is really good. opens his mouth wide and rarely touches the spoon or puts fingers in mouth. - i bet that all will change once he wants to feed himself

egypt: nice to go away for a few days! a good exercise for lo too. (keep up with routine even in different environment). - any tips for our trip???

twiglett: you've got a flapping lo too?
ds had that too. after a few weeks weaning he completly went off. i left it for a few days and had to start again. but he got into it again much quicker.

welcome helsy! sorry, but ds is quite good with all that despite him not being able to roll back yet
maybe try feed her with a cup (small one, like the cap from the bottles?) to get her used to the taste. and then swap to bottles (3hole teat) or try diff. formulas?

hope you all have a fab weekend!

SusiS · 06/11/2004 08:49

infos and tips on a 6mths old one

6 months

Twiglett · 06/11/2004 09:03

I scanned that link Susi .. it makes me feel like a bad mum

Hi Helsy, welcome on-board .. from the advice I've gleaned on MN keep trying to give her bottles, or try a cup (tommee tippee is supposed to be good) .. DO NOT PANIC .. if the worst comes to the worst, as long as fully weaned DD will survive fine on morning and evening drinks .. some babies are just like that .. and anyway when there's no other option she'll probably take one no problem from CM

Egypt · 06/11/2004 12:58

helsy, dd has gone of bottle too. has for a few weeks. just plays with it. think if she was starving she would drink though.

as for the tommee tippee cups - someone tell me! bought one for dd today as the anywayup cup was too hard to suck. now this tommeetippee easiflow one needs to be sucked AND bit at the same time! eh?!!? i cant co-ordinate that v well let alone dd. sure georgina was getting one, wondered how you got along with it?

if all else fails could use a normal cup or those doity cups are sposed to be good.

well, my sister said banana was too hard to digest at this age, gina says the same, but annabel karmel doesnt, so just to be on safe side, thought i'd avoid until 6 months.

well done georgina btw, that's a great achievement.

my poor mum has taken dd for a walk in the rain. bless. it's nice to be home

ahhhhh went well then??

my you have slender hands

GeorginaA · 06/11/2004 16:35

I blame the piano playing...

... that I don't do any more... ahem. Touch typing?! Up to 12,000+ words today and all of them crap

Yes, not too bad. Started out pushing it all back out with his tongue but by the end was sticking out his tongue to try and reach it, so I think he's getting the idea. He slept really well at his lunchtime nap, so I'm hoping that's a sign of better day sleeps to come now he's on solids.

Another lunch of babyrice tomorrow (think it's okay, to make it a little thicker? Felt a bit runny to me... but might he not like the texture if thicker?) then on Monday he gets CARROT!

Hello All. Hello Egypt girl! was starting to get a little worried about you, but then I have that tendency, just like my mother . And Hello Helsy! My DD didn't want the bottle at first, and it was changing teats that cracked it for us. (She favours the Tommee Tippee Nuby one.)

Took her to the Early Years Theatre conference in Leeds yesterday. Was quite apprehensive when I saw the schedule, which looked like lots of talking and not a lot of theatre... of course we didn't manage to sit through the talking. But watched a theatre show with her that was absolutely fantastic, and she was transfixed. Lots of music and sliding doors with shapes behind, and strong lighting changes and wibbly wobbly singing. I was quite moved, seeing her involvement in it. They had people up on stage at the end joining in, and I volunteered us to play drums, using her feet in her little red tights as drumsticks. She was so fascinated! The company was called theatrerites, and the show 'In One Ear' if anyone is interested... it's on in Leeds for a bit longer I think.

Anyway it was all quite an adventure and we are glad to be home.

Re: solids... of course we have been cracking on for a couple of weeks now, but DD has similar tendencies to yours Twiglett, sometimes rejecting solids and preferring a breastfeed. Frustrating for me, as she sleeps much better if she's got something solid inside her. I think maybe the excitement of the journeying is making her want the familiarity and comfort; hopefully she'll settle back. She loves banana, pear and avocado; will tolerate broccoli, likes butternut squash and pumpkin. I took Hipp jars down to Leeds and she liked those. But I don't understand why it's OK for Hipp to have butter and cheese in their recipes if you're not supposed to use cow's milk till later???

cat82 · 06/11/2004 19:48

Hi everyone

Welcome Helsy, lovely to see you. No advice though i'm afraid, i'ma gina fordie

Georgina- well done on the writing! will you let us all read it when it's done?

Kiera slept very well through all the fireworks, that woke ME up! I was very relived though, they were soooo loud, i swear every single person down our street were having fireworks parties.

I've been threatening to put this movie on our thread for a while, but keep forgetting. You may enjoy this, as you not only get to see Kiera giggling manicaly, but me in hysterics as well-and wearing a very silly hat. I just couldn't wokr out what was making her laugh so much!

GiggleGirl

Take care all

xxxxx

Bozza · 06/11/2004 21:41

Couldn't manage the link cat but got yours georgina.

I've given prunes to DD on the days she's had bananas to balance things out because I remember that bananas used to constipate DS. But they are soooo convenient.

Went to firework display tonight. DD slept through it all but DS met friends from nursery so impressed.

Twiglett · 06/11/2004 22:03

cat

thanks for that, that really had me giggling too .. loved it .. that's so clever .. even had DH running in from the lounge to find out what the noise was (he thought I'd got DD up again )

GeorginaA · 06/11/2004 22:28

Oh cat - what a WONDERFUL clip, thank you for posting You had me in stitches!

OP posts:
kbaby · 07/11/2004 10:44

Yeahhh DD's learnt how to sit up on her own. She manages it for about 2-3 mins. Although if she looks up she falls over straight away. We are also starting breakfast on Monday. I cant seem to find any plain baby porridge though thats gluten free. All the gluten free stuff seems to be filled with sugar. Any Ideas? I forgot shes also learnt when on her belly how to move around in a circle. It takes a lot of effort but at least she can now move around a bit and reach her toys.

In regards to the cups I bought the avent cup but took the valve out of it. This has made it free flow but because the teat is rubber DD seems to quite like it. She also recognises our cats. When they walk in the room she gets really excited and bounces about and tries to grab them as they walk past. The cats are black and we also have brown furry cusions. The poor thing gets a bit confused and if she sees the custions she thinks they are the cats and again gets excited and grabs the fur on the cusions and puts it in her mouth

Georgina a your DS looks lovely. He looks so grown up already.

DD also does the flapping when I feed her. She does it from the moment she sees the bowl being carried in the living room.
Cat I couldnt manage to download the clip but it sounds as if it was lovely.

Blinking heck, Ive just read that 6 month development thing. I feel guilty now that I dont do any of those things.

SusiS · 07/11/2004 10:55

wohooo 6 months today!!!! (calendar months)
wow, time really just flies by!

georgina: lovely pics you've got there!!! it's fun, isn't it???

cat: made me giggle too
aren't they just lighten up the day with their laugh!?!?!

nothing really new here. dp woke me again last night (1am/2.30) - and then ds 4/6am sigh

sitting up is getting better and better. and he also does that pushing around when on his tummy.
and he gets so frustrated when he can't get what he wants

Bozza · 07/11/2004 10:56

kbaby I got the creamy organic Boots porridge because its sugar free. Its got gluten but from oats and not wheat. I think I mentioned this lower down and prufrock did a link suggesting it is OK. Planning onto moving onto ready brek once she passes 6 months and the porridge runs out.

Snap with the cups. Its also what I did with DS so I had all the cups and just needed new spouts.

Is any one else having trouble with constipation? DD seems to be. Got herself really worked up this morning.

GeorginaA · 07/11/2004 11:22

One thing I'd be wary of sugar free stuff though - do check to see what they put in instead. Some of the sweeteners that gets put in kids food... well, let's just say that I'd prefer the sugar!!!

A lot of sugar free stuff isn't really sugar free it's no sugar added, so there'll be fructose (fruit sugars) etc in it (which isn't a bad thing, but may not be as virtuous as you're expecting).

I personally don't see sugar as the big bad in moderation as long as their teeth (when they get them) are cleaned fairly well. Far better to have sugar than salt, imo.

OP posts:
GeorginaA · 07/11/2004 11:25

Incidentally, if you want a fairly additive free breakfast, could you make up a load of fruit purees and use it to flavour pure baby rice to make it a bit more interesting for them?

cat82 · 07/11/2004 14:31

Hi everybody,

Glad those that could download the clip liked it. You can see why i was laughing so much!!

Kiera is also doing the shuffling along on her tummy when she's on her front. Still isn't rolling though!! She isn't pulling herself up into sitting or anything yet either, but she's getting quite steady on her legs now, when i hold her hands. I don't think she's figured out that she can hold on to me to support her self yet though.

I'm using some jars with sugar in them, but i am careful not to give too much, and try and balance it with vegetables as well.

I agree with Georgina that's it's okay in moderation, and it's better than salt.

Anyway, hope everyone's okay!
xxxx

GeorginaA · 07/11/2004 15:07

I've been teaching ds2 to blow raspberries today We both think it's hilarious... think his grandmother won't be impressed though You can see him watch me really intently, then half stick his tongue out and blow, and he keeps trying until he gets it then giggles delightedly! It's SO sweet!

Egypt · 07/11/2004 16:06

cute pic georgina. trying to download the movie now cat, but it is buffering veeeeerrry sloooooowly on my dad's pc.
