I'm doing a sainsbury's shop .. was going to get some jars in for when I'm too lazy to cook / run out of stuff .. anyone tried babylicious? is it organic?

GeorginaA · 23/10/2004 20:58

Babylicious is supposed to be fairly good in terms of the contents is what it says on the tin rather than lots of other stuff to bulk out. Hipp Organic looks good.

I'm rather limited to what our local Tescos has - which is one of the reasons I'm doing the cookathon now, so it'll only be if I run out of everything I'll run down to Tescos to pick up whatever jars they have to last the rest of the week...

Georgina - just read in our NCT magazine about a woman whose baby had only breastmilk until 11 months! Are you not going to take up that challenge on behalf of the May babies? [wink}

Gawd... if I'm the only one who's lasted... I'm feeling my principles slipping away as I type...

don't think a teaspoon and a half of organix baby rice in breast milk is really weaning yet

and don't forget DD is older than yours

I'm not sure what to do now though, how many meals / types of food she gets a day

Judd · 23/10/2004 22:01

Have Kbaby, Prufrock and Spots? Mind you, Prufrock is probably at 6 months by now. Think everybody else is already over on the dark side........

spots · 23/10/2004 22:33

I am on the dark side, yes. Weaned at 22 weeks but spent a couple of weeks doing it without much dedication on my part or capability on DD's. She still hasn't had enough in her mouth to give her a real 'adult' poo, if that's a good measure. But she's really enjoying avocado, carrot, baby rice and melon.

I am going to admit here that the Bounty pack leaves me cold. It's like the starkest evidence that new mums are God's gift to the marketing man, and seems to revolve around the sorts of scents and plastic gewgaws (mostly in the name of skincare and laundry - what's wrong with warm water?) that I'm trying my hardest to avoid. Worse still was the Heinz 'weaning pack' that plopped through the letterbox yesterday. A free sachet of 'breakfast yoghurt mix' - just add water - second ingredient was sugar. Yeuch.

Sorry G., sounds a bit snobbish doesn't it? Not meaning to be, but I did throw pretty much the whole lot in the bin.

Mrs D, if you are passing through, 'Lucas' had me confused. Then I thought it was probably 'Leuchars', which is near St. Andrew's in the Fife area (as are we, if you did need anything.) Very nice around there, though I don't know Leuchars itself. Susi, your boy does however share a name with the absolutely most fantastic ice cream in Scotland - Luca's - which is an Edinburgh establishment and one any boy should be proud to associate himself with.

spots · 23/10/2004 22:35

Um, I was going to preview that message because I thought it sounded a bit TOO high minded. But pressed 'post' instead. I'm not that much of a sneery old cow, honest. But I do have a small whisky in my hand.

prufrock · 23/10/2004 22:43

We don't get to 6 months until Wednesday. But I'M not weaning (really I'm not) we did 3 mouthfuld of baby rice, but then stopped. So I'm not counting that. In fact, could you all forget that thead and pretend you never saw it. It didn't happen OK

prufrock · 23/10/2004 22:46

Oh and re the meet-up, no we are not sure which house we will be living in next may, but it will be somewhere near here, and it will have 5 bedrooms, so wherever we decide to have the meet-up those of you from further afield are more than welcome to come and stay and travel with me - and we are minutes from Stanstead so easy to get to from Scotland....

SusiS · 24/10/2004 09:03

good morning everybody!
well, quite exhausting night. fed ds 11 and he woke 2am and then every hour till 6 - and finally i could turn around till 8! and he still didn't scream for food

prufrock: weaning thread? which one? i haven't seen one
and stenstead is only 1hour away from me

spots: no worries! i find it hard to find "cereals" without sugar and glutenfree! - so in that sense it would have been easier if i could have waited longer with weaning! - anyways, almost everything has got sugar in it grrr - just waiting for the 6month turn to do "proper" dairy and cereals with gluten
oh boy, i can see me in the supermarket standing and reading every box for contents
my shopping trips are getting longer and longer

lucas icecrea???
and only in scotland??
well, haven't been up there yet anyways so might find my way up there one day

georgina: come on; you can do it! just go with the needs of ds; it's much easier to stick to milk only. and less messy

oh and keep going with your novel!!! haven't had time to get a look yet but deff will do

kbaby · 24/10/2004 19:56

Im counting down the hours to tomorrow spent most of the day in tears and shouting at DP for no particular reason other than the fact that im peed off about tomorrow.

Yes Judd we are on the dark side I decided to wean DD at 19 weeks and 2 days. I feel guilty about it sometimes but the increase to 3hourly feedings were wearing me out. My friends DS also started waking 2hourly at night he was 18 weeks and now 20 weeks and still waking. This has made me feel a bit more positive as once I had introduced solids she went back to 5hourly feeds at night whereas he is still on milk and hasnt. This makes me think she was getting more hungrier and is more satisfied now.
I admire you though Georginaa and Prufrock, maybe on my 2nd ill try harder.

I had my bounty pack on saturday. I didnt get any Avent containers though. All I had were packet dinners, some jars of food and juice. Ive already decided that DD gets water not juice to drink and DP has said that we only use jars for emergencies and otherwise its homecooked foods.
How much sugar in baby food would be classed as high and where do I look for it? On the labels of desserts I notice that is says carbohydrate of which sugars e.g 8.2. Am I looking in the right place?

Judd · 24/10/2004 20:13

I know! I know! (I'm a little obsessed by sugar content since I had gestational diabetes and am now more likely to get it in later life )
I cut out a table from Right Start Magazine which said that per 100g:-
10g is a lot of sugar, 3g is a little
20g is a lot of fat, 3g is a little
5g is a lot of sat. fat, 1g is a little
1.25g is a lot of salt, 0.25g is a little
Hope that helps and hope all goes well at work for you tomorrow Kbaby!

Egypt · 24/10/2004 20:29

hello, at my mums so have been busy for a couple of days and not posted.

yes would love a meet up. we're in the east midlands, which is pretty central !
seriously, anywhere. should we all list our locations and stick a pin in a map in the middle? i'm in derby - ish

dd has been a star today. went for my grandad's 80th bday meal. she was awake from 11.30 until about 5.30 when she had a little nap!! and she never grizzled once!! superb. just found out my cousin is pregnant again after losing her last baby at 26 weeks. although she only found out today. bit early - [sucks in breath through cleanched teeth]

kbaby, good luck tomorrow, {{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}

nighty night xx

libb · 24/10/2004 20:30

Kbaby, will your DP be cooking then? I haven't started weaning yet but cannot imagine being organised enough to prepare "proper" food all the time (although I would love to) - we shall see what we are eating at the time (blend if suitable and then do organics jars/prepare batches for other times). Will spend weekends preparing batches for freezing if possible. I am finding time is very tight on weekdays - I leave at 7am and get home for 6-6.30 pm. I am then washing dirty bottles, defrosting something for tea, doing a quick tidy up, DP comes home (quick update of day for each other) and then quality time with DS/DP, bath, food, sleep routine - this doesn't include checking next day's bag/laundry and all that other stuff that comes as and when - I am learning new skills all the time though! you will too!). DP and I finally settle down between 9/10pm and then it is knacksville central.

I guess this whole mum malarky is a work in progress! you will be fine tomorrow, you are strong/capable and wonderful - and always will bexxxxxxxxxx

SusiS · 24/10/2004 20:52

evening

good luck tomorrow kbaby!!! {{{{hug}}}}

had a fab day today! went with dp/ds to the "look out" - it's a great woodarea with exciting kids playgrounds and also one for adults - and woods woods woods; even a bike rental and no restrictions
big picnicarea where dp and i had some hot chocolate and ds had his veggies
when we got home finally at about 2ish he just fell into bed - bless

dinner he had 4 cubes in total!! and still wanted more - so he had joghurt too.

i decided to make veggies/fruits myself (freeze it) and everything meat i buy in jars. because soon he can eat with us anyways. and i tried chicken once and it just didn't turn out nicely

agreed georgina/prufrock: well done on still bf'ing!!!

judd: i think you can't be too carefull with sugar for lo's! just look at all them overweight kids! i just want him to have a good start; he'll get the hang of sugar soon enough anyways

ouch libb, sounds very exhausting! but as you said, it's a matter of developing new skills! - how is work going?

nightynight

Twiglett · 24/10/2004 20:56

prufock .. are you planning on weaning on wednesday then?

kbaby .. good luck tomorrow it will be fine

spots · 24/10/2004 21:17

Today feels a bit crap here. DD slept badly last night and I was trying to settle her without feeding, which meant that at one point was up with her crying for an hour before succumbing to the inevitable and getting the boob out. So today we are both shattered, and our nice lunch out with friends was just a cry-fest (her not me). Seems like I've spent more time with a miserable/screaming baby than ever before. Where's my cheery girl gone I wonder? is this Teething as so many (SO MANY!) people suggest when she turns beetroot and roars. The day has shot by and here we are facing another night time already. Feel myself turning beetroot and roaring...

However am quite excited about the idea of a meet-up. I was cheering myself up with it as I gritted my teeth against the grief in the middle of the night. Do mumsnetters on meetups call each other by their nicknames? Do you think it will bring the May thread chatter to a close? Do you think the main thing that keeps us talking is imagining that we're all quite nice, but when we meet we'll decide that everyone's horrible? Yes, I was cheering myself up, honest...

Who's been on meetups before?

Kbaby, best best best luck, hope you find some job satisfaction tomorrow. xxx

Judd · 24/10/2004 22:45

Spots - I got in the habit of always carrying 3 different types of teething remedy around with me:- Bonjela, Anbesol and Nelson's teething granules. If DD was a bit whingey, I used to give an experimental slosh around with whichever came to hand first. The teething powders (baby cocaine!) were always quite a good one, because if they didn't cure a pain, the novelty of having a powder tipped in one's mouth seemed to be a good distraction! Can't do any harm.....may do a lot of good.

Judd · 24/10/2004 22:47

In my Tesco Baby magazine, they also gave a diagram of a baby's mouth and in which order teeth should appear. DD was textbook, and I found the diagram really helpful because it meant I knew where to look and therefore target with the medicine.
I'll shut up about teeth now.

libb · 24/10/2004 23:09

Judd, share the dirt on teeth! Ds seems fixated with his upper right gum but I assumed bottom ones came first.

Spots, I imagine are you are just as lovely in real life as you are here. Don't you forget it missy! Nuff said. I don't think any of us will be disappointed . . .

kbaby, you will be fine tomorrow - it is quite a wretched feeling but you will be surprised how it all comes back to you. Take care sweets xxxx

Judd · 24/10/2004 23:17

Libb - I'll type it out tomorrow. All I can remember off the top of my head is that the bottom middle two come first followed by the top middle two. Oh and there's 20 in total !

libb · 24/10/2004 23:20

20!!! Ohmigod. Trust DS to be fixated by all other teeth than the obvious bottom ones - I can feel definite lumps in the area he likes to fiddle with but a type out would be brilliant. Thank you, I really appreciate it.
