Hi. I have to post this. I started POtty Training my DD who was 2 in April last Monday and by the wednesday had cracked it. She is now dry in the day and for her naps. I even went shopping for 4 hours this week and kept asking her every 10 minutes if she needed a wee and she eventually said yes, so i took her and she held herself in time. I am so proud of her.

AbbyLou · 28/07/2007 15:38

Wow well done Elmtree, it sounds like you and your dd have done very well. Things are not going too bad here. We are on day 5 now and have had only one wee accident today and one poo. We went out to a park yesterday afternoon for 4 hours and he didn't have any accidents apart from a poo and we've been out for a picnic today and he's been three hours with just a poo accident. I think he may be cracking the wees although he still doesn't say he needs to go. The poos are an entirely different matter. He hasn't done one at all in the potty or toilet yet and just does them in his pants. Does anyone have any advice for encouraging him to do it where he should? He gets one Smartie for a wee in the potty and has been promised a whole packet for a poo but it doesn't seem to be incentive enough. He's not even remotely bothered when he has done it either.

micromummy · 28/07/2007 22:36

ds has the same problem with poos - 2 in potty so far but only by getting him to sit on it for 15 mins when one seemed highly likely. he got extra sweets and we phoned daddy.he was very proud of himself but still doesn't want to do poos in potty - runs off and soon produces one elsewhere .
he will wee in toilet happily (one sweetie) but doesn't seem to know/care when he needs to go. wonder when this will come? this year?
we are going to my mums for 4 days so very very worried indeed. it is over 20 years since anyone piddled on the floor there, but i don't think it is going to be long before someone does.

Oh dear, it seems that he is easily distracted on the weekend - one wee and one poo on the floor today, but also two wees on the potty so I shouldn't really complain. Yesterday had no accidents though, so I'm not sure what is going on today. He woke up grumpy so maybe that has something to do with it. He is getting bored with staying at home which is a PITA as I don't want to go out yet unless it's urgent.

Littlefish · 29/07/2007 19:22

Hello - please can I join you!

Day one today, but due to my complete disorganisation, we didn't manage to start until about 5.00pm!

So, dd did 2 wees in her knickers within 20 minutes, but then between 5.20 and 7.00pm, 2 wees on the potty!

She's so excited by the idea of getting chocolate that her initial tantrums are quickly diverted.

Will let you know how we get on tomorrow. I've invited another friend around who is also potty training, so that we can stay in together.

Biglips · 30/07/2007 10:00

we had a little accident on Saturday as there was a wee trail from the bedroom to me!! as i was on the landing hoovering, she came running to me and "MUMMY!!! TOILET!!!"...so she is well. Yesterday went out all afternoon, bought her potty with us and she asked for the toilet which i took her in a corner for a wee in the potty plus she had one of those piddle pad in her pram too and plus on in her car seat too

Biglips · 30/07/2007 10:01

i hope everyone can work out what i was trying to say as typing errors!!! !!

jambomum · 30/07/2007 11:17

Thanks Aefondkiss - I have thought about taking time off, but can't at the moment.

Have had some stern words with nursery this morning, as DS was a bit better over the weekend, with wees and a poo in the potty.

Although 3 accidents whilst friends round to play on Sunday, as he was far too busy to go to potty. He does know when he is wet, but doesn't yet seem to be able to anticipate. Anyone else have this?

Have told nursery not to pester him and have taken in potty (as they only have toilets), in the hope that he won't feel he is being dragged away every 15 minutes!
Fingers -crossed (but not legs.

Will give it another few days and give up if no better.

Very envious of Elmtree.

Littlefish · 30/07/2007 11:24

Tarran tarrah! Big trumpety celebrations here, Dd has just done a poo on the potty! Has been without nappy for about 2 hours and no wee yet...

AbbyLou · 30/07/2007 13:05

Well we managed 2 two hour car journeys yesterday and ds was dry the whole time. We stopped after 45 minutes in a layby for a potty stop and he did a wee then he asked 2 more times and produced - I was so proud of him. He had no wee accidents at all yesterday despite the excitement of a party, the beach and the funfair. He is beginning to ask to go a bit, usually after he has done a little dribble and then he stops and says he needs to go. Poos are still a nightmare. He won't do one in the potty and it seems impossible to anticipate when they are coming. He just does it in his pants and is not at all bothered. Any tips anyone?

AbbyLou · 30/07/2007 16:04

Ds has spent the day with Grandma and Grandad today and is due back sometime within the next hour. I wonder how he has got on? I hope he's not been too bad for them. To be honest it has been bliss to not have to think about the potty/toilet all day. Today is day 7 and it is getting a little easier, I'm just deperate to crack this pooing issue.

LittleB · 30/07/2007 21:44

Can I join? I started dd (2.2) on Saturday and mainly she's been going in the loo or on the potty, we do singing and dancing around clapping whenever she goes which she loves. She's only had a couple of leaks in the house on the way to the loo, but has weed in the garden several times, she's also weed in the park a couple of times, (had to wipe out the playhouse today luckily no-one watching and I was prepared. I wanted to ask, at home I'm leaving her bare, just a dress on, I'm putting knickers on when we go out though (e.g. to the park) when should I try putting knickers on her all the time? She can't pull them down herself yet, but will happily sit on the toilet on her own. Also no poos in potty yet as she usually does poos first thing when she wakes while she has her night nappy on, should I worry about this?

Gobbledigook · 31/07/2007 17:45

Can I gloat?

I always, always say on these threads - just leave it till they are older and more ready!

It worked for me to leave ds1 and ds2 till 2 yrs 9 months and 2 yrs 11 months.

So yesterday, took nappies off ds3 who is 2 yrs 11 months.

YEsterday - half and half on potty or in pants.

Today - first wee in pants, rest of the day absolutely everything in the potty with no prompting from me. Lots of wees and 3 poos.

Easy.

Gobbledigook · 31/07/2007 17:46

Ahhhh, but, not been out yet with pants on.

Hmmm, may have gloated too soon!

Littlefish · 31/07/2007 19:15

We went out today but dd went commando! As soon as I put knickers on her, she thinks she's wearing a nappy and promptly wees. Only 1 accident today - lots of wees, but no poo at all, not even when I put a nappy on her for a sleep.

Let's see what tomorrow brings.

Gobbledigook, dd is 2 yrs 8 months and has taken to it really well, so I think I agree with your "leave it until their older" idea.

AbbyLou · 31/07/2007 19:26

Ds has done brilliantly today. He went all day with only one wee accident and that was right at the end of the evening, out in the garden. This included a trip to the Children's Hospital for an eye eppointment for him and he even asked to go to the toilet while we were there. I was so proud of him. If only we could get this poo thing sorted about I'd be a happy bunny.

Gobbledigook · 31/07/2007 19:28

It's strange - it's sooo common for them to get the wee part but not the poo part but all 3 of mine have had no problem and done both at the same time. Weird kids!

AbbyLou · 01/08/2007 11:03

So far so good today. Ds has asked for the potty every time he has needed, done all his own clothes and just got on with it. He's not had a poo yet though...I've shown him the Thomas the Tank Engine jigsaw in my wardrobe which is there for his first totally clean and dry day. He understands what he's got to do to get it but I guess we'll wait and see.

Littlefish · 01/08/2007 19:11

A fantastic day, with no accidents at all! I only reminded dd once about using the potty, the rest of the time, she just took herself off and re-appeared with a potty full of wee, and a big grin on her face

The most surprising was when I was on the phone and she appeared with a potty holding an aboslutely enormous poo.

Dare I say it, but in 3 days, we seem to have gone from nappies full time, to potty. Surely it must be about to go wrong.

Ok, so what's the next stage. She cries every time we try and sit her on the loo, so what do I do next.

LittleB · 01/08/2007 19:35

Only one wee in the house today, when she'd only recently woken up, but did a pooh on the beach (her first without nappies) and wouldn't sit on potty, just pooed on beach, but easy to clear up and not too many people noticed . I would've waited until she's older, but want to do it in the summer so she doesn't freeze her bits off, and she'll be 3 next summer which is getting a bit old! She also seems ready and seems happy on either loo or potty so getting there gradually. She does keep weeing on her dresses though as she sits on them, how do you get yours to hold them up, and learn to pull their pants down when they're not bare, do they just learn? she weed on her potty in her wetsuit on the beach though! At least she was trying.

Gobbledigook · 01/08/2007 20:59

Day 3
No accidents. No prompting needed. 1.5 hour trip up motorway uneventful - he said he needed a wee and even held it till we got to services.

That's my boy!

AbbyLou · 02/08/2007 09:44

Dare I say it but I think we may be ready to graduate! The Thomas jigsaw was ceremoniously presented last night for first day with no accidents and he did 3 (!) enormous poos on the potty. Woo hoo, I think we've cracked it! This morning he has already done one poo in the potty. He sometimes tells me he needs to go but most of the time he just takes himself off to the potty. I can't believe he's done it in a week, this time last week I thought it was going to take forever!

cornflakegirl · 02/08/2007 10:23

We've been at this potty training lark for a couple of weeks now. DS (2.2) has definitely got the hang of what he's supposed to be doing, and will take himself off to use the potty. However, we're still getting at least one accident most days - mainly when he's busy playing. Asking him if he needs to go is met with flat denial - and we don't really want to make him sit on the potty just because he hasn't gone for an hour as sometimes he'll go for four or five hours without weeing.

Any tips?

ELMTREE · 02/08/2007 16:08

I posted not long ago to tell everyone how proud i was of my dd cracking the potty training lark within 4 days. She is still dry in the day, and have had 5 dry mornings. I went to check on her the other night before i went to bed and she had taken her napie off, done a wee on the potty beside her bed, put her trousers back on and got back in bed again and gone to sleep. Although now, she is waking up, asking for either me or dh to get her on the potty, and she is taking quite a while to go back to sleep, which is proving a pain at 2am in the morning. Any ideas?

Also she is very reluctant to do a poo on the potty. She was very badly constipated about 3 weeks ago, and we went through hell with it. Hospital and everything. I now am convinced she is holding it back, as you can see her clenching. I dont want her to be afraid of the potty. HELP!!

GreatGooglyMoogly · 02/08/2007 16:19

Congrats to all of you whose dcs are doing so well!

DS1 is still having accidents (day 8) and for the first time I am glad he is a terrible eater as I only have to clean poo up every 2-3 days . He has even played with a small amount of poo in his pants and claimed he hasn't done a poo when asked . He says he didn't know he was doing it and I'm not sure if he is telling the truth or not. He definitely can't hold on if he needs to go. He is 3.4 though and really needs to get this this Summer - aargh!
