Told off by hotel owner for way I disposed of nappies. Was I in the wrong?

Hi there.

This is my very first post so please be gentle!
I'm just looking for opinions as I'm feeling v annoyed about something and I'm not sure if I'm being unreasonable by feeling this way.
I'm on holiday in a UK hotel for a few days with my 2 year old daughter. We are still potty training so still have wet or dirty nappies at times.
Late last night - around midnight - she had a dirty nappy. When she's had wet nappies I put them in nappy bags and then put them in the bin in my room. However, I didn't want to do that with a soiled one as it would stink out the room. I decided to put the nappy (wrapped in a nappy bag) in a bin in a communal toilet 2 floors up from as it was the only one I could find.
I never thought anymore of it but this morning the hotel owner pulled me aside and clearly p!ssed off told me off for leaving the nappy where I'd put it. He said I'd stank that floor out and had left on lots of lights behind me. He said he knew it was me as he played back cctv to find out!! I asked where I should have put it and he said outside my room and someone would have collected it. I was raging but apologised and walked off.

The owner has been unfriendly and cold to me and my daughter since we arrived. He has made no effort to chat to me at all and hasn't spoken to my daughter at all. I got the impression right from the start tjT he didn't like me although he seems nice with the other guests.

I rarely leave negative feedback for hotel ratings but seriously contemplating doing just that when I leave tomorrow.

Am I being unreasonable?

You are supposed to flush the poo. Especially post weaning.

I’m going to be the woman taking the pic of the back of a packet of pampers at this rate!

marycontraryquite · 07/11/2018 00:22

Poor OP. MN loses it's shit over shit from what I have seen over the years. I have never heard of scraping solids from nappies either and neither have any parents I have mentioned this thread to today.

The sound of your 'break' reminds me why I hate B&B's and small hotels. My understanding of
Hospitality is that even if a guest does something deemed unacceptable by the owner, it should be raised in a polite way. I think the matter was dealt with badly by the owner and checking the CCTV to catch you for putting a nappy in a bin in a toilet and leaving some lights on is downright odd.

Personally, I couldn't have been bothered wandering around at night to get rid of it and would absolutely have left it triple wrapped in my bathroom but really, it's not the end of the world. I'm sorry you are feeling unwelcome on your holiday.

Never ever heard you are supposed to flush poo out of a nappy! Thank goodness we are past that stage!

We would have had a real job flushing the poo out of our DC's nappies. They weren't solid lumps at all. Would have needed some sort of tool I think..Envy

SnuggyBuggy · 07/11/2018 10:11

This thread is seriously making me feel like ebf DD until she is potty trained Grin

RiddleyW · 07/11/2018 10:19

I never knew you were meant to flush the poo. I’ve always just binned it. Too late now can’t believe I never realised.

Wazznme · 07/11/2018 10:22

The only grim thing about this thread is people scraping poo off nappies. I feel sick.

Wazznme · 07/11/2018 10:23

PMSL @leafgrass. Some sort of tool or something. hahahaha

InsomniacAnonymous · 07/11/2018 10:50

"I've only just realised that perhaps it was a shared bathroom. But leaving the door wide open was a bit misleading."

If you're leaving a shared bathroom in a B&B it makes sense to leave the door open so it can be seen to be unoccupied.

BeautifulBlue · 07/11/2018 11:44

YANBU! It’s a toilet bin ffs? Most logical place to put a nappy. Not like OP put it in an open bin next to reception or something. Did the toilet have baby changing facilities OP? If it does he’s being even more unreasonable but even if it didn’t it’s a complete non issue & checking CCTV to see who it was!!? Over kill!! Just empty the bin & move on!! I bet if you had left it bagged in the hall (which sounds lazy/unhygienic) he would have moaned about that to. Really shocked at the responses telling you how disgusting it was Shock!! Far worse places you could have left it, & few better in my opinion!

Heidi3333 · 07/11/2018 11:44

I can understand scraping pop off terry toweling non disposable nappies but not disposable ones 🤔

OP posts:
leafbud · 07/11/2018 11:50

You could hold the end of a terry-towelling nappy whilst dangling it in the toilet to flush away the deposits. It then went straight away to soak in the nappy bin full of nappysan before washing. Can't really do that with a disposable.

Heidi3333 · 07/11/2018 11:50

Thanks beautiful,

I didn't check to see if it had baby changing facilities. I just saw the bin, dropped the nappy in and didn't think another thing of it.

Off topic - are hotel owners actually allowed to have cctv in their property? The type that record guests? I'm hoping he didn't have any in the actual guest rooms 😮. Just weird. Felt like I was in a prison of some sort and had committed a crime!

Lol good idea. Best get a patent in!

Jamhandprints · 07/11/2018 12:19

It's fine to leave a bad review if you want to. Doesn't sound like a friendly environment. I've never in my life scraped poo off a disposable nappy before binning it. Who does that?

Fabaunt · 07/11/2018 12:26

Of course a hotel is allowed have cctv in their building in communal areas. If you don’t like the set up, stay somewhere else.
Are you seriously on your high horse because you had to be reprimanded for dumping a shitty nappy in some other guests bathroom? Would you feel the same if someone had come in and dumped their child’s shitty Nappy in your bin?

Wazznme · 07/11/2018 13:08

I hate this notion oft' trotted out here, if you don't like it, go somewhere else. Presumably the OP didn't know anything about hotel. I agree, poopy nappy should have been left in her own bathroom bin, but she made a mistake, she shat on her own doorstep and was caught out.
You can't just whimsically make alternative arrangements.
Admittedly, I'd have quadruple tied the shit and stored it in my own bin, but, to be hunted down and scolded seems a bit ott.

Maybe look down your nose at someone, but I wouldn't actually hunt someone down to find them for leaving a dirty stinky nappy somewhere.

Wazznme · 07/11/2018 13:10

Most of us can't just 'find alternative accommodation' because we don't have that much money to throw around.
I agree though, poopy nappies can stink a surrounding neighbourhood.

Wazznme · 07/11/2018 13:11

But shovelling shit from a nappy? Give me a fucking break.

Wazznme · 07/11/2018 13:12

And as for the posters thinking this is the done thing? IT'S NOT!

Wazznme · 07/11/2018 13:13

What the heck do you use? The hotel teaspoons? A spatula you brought from home? WTF? A cup maybe? Might get the bulk of it out. How fucking gross.

SoupDragon · 07/11/2018 13:15

Most of post-weaning poos peel off when you hold the nappy over a toilet.

I know because it is a thing. Poo should be in the sewer system, not landfill.

HoustonBess · 07/11/2018 13:15

I don't think he should have had a go at you.

I second the plopping the poo in the toilet solution. We use washables most of the time so do this anyway. When we use a disposable we just drop the poo in the toilet as well. Saves a lot of stink and most of the time it just falls off.

Wazznme · 07/11/2018 13:17

I have had to leave hospital wards where patients pood themselves as I was getting sick. Until the windows were opened for 20 minutes and everything cleaned up, so I don't like the smell of shit. But I did tolerate my own baby's shit. Because she was cute apart from her shit. So yes, although I agree the OP shouldn't have been hunted down, she should have kept the shit in her own bathroom, sealed, with door shut and perfume sprayed in the absence of air freshener.
